Paint Finishes???
« on: August 17, 2013, 12:40:35 AM »
As I think ahead to painting the black on my Jacobs DVII, I am thinking about the different ways the different material accepts paint and how to portray it.  My thinking is that if the entire fuselage is painted black the fabric would look different than the metal cowling pieces even though the same color paint is used.  The fabric might soak up more of the paint and have a matte (flat) appearence where as the metal parts might have a sheen to them.  Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

I shall never forget my admiration for that German pilot, who single handed, fought seven of us for ten minutes. I saw him go into a fairly steep dive and so I continued to watch, and then saw the triplane hit the ground and disappear into a thousand fragments...James McCudden

Here is a great example of how the same colour appears on different materials.

Krestin,
In my limited experience with all black finishes I believe it is the most difficult to replicate. I personally use many subtle shade or tone differences as I move around the model. Different blacks for example interior, Nato, Semi-gloss, and all with slight tinting with brown, grey or green in the enamels I use provide a bit of contrast and break up the monotone effect. If you check out some of the photos in Completed Models Sept. 2012 of Albatros DV "Monnington" you can probably see the effect.
Good luck with this one, great scheme you've chosen.
Cheers,
Lance

Lance, thanks for the tips.  I looked at your Monnington DV and see what you mean about the varying blacks and the weathering.  Well done!
