Airfix 1:72 He111 Motörhead special
« on: July 04, 2020, 07:16:23 PM »
2019 was the 40th anniversary of the Motörhead album “Bomber”.  On tour, they had a 40ft long He111.

To celebrate the anniversary Airfix reboxed a He111 kit and offered additional decals so you could choose between a Luftwaffe version or the Motörhead special.  It sold out quickly so they released a B version with the Motörhead option only.

This eventually arrived a few days ago.  I wanted this not to make a detailed accurate model of a He111 - I made a Revell one a few years back - but only for the Motörhead special, so the quality of the build etc is not as important as usual (for me).  This is also to help get my mojo back.

Actually the kit is very good for Airfix standards, sharp moulding, barely any flash, good surfaces and so far fits together very well.

I rarely paint figures, especially in 1:72, but will try with this one as I have a .3mm drawing pen just fine enough to draw Lemmy’s facial hair..

Pics to follow once I figure out how to upload from Flickr.

Photo of the box.  Not sure if this works properly if you click the link?

I added this as an attachment, the Flickr link wouldn’t work.

So I tried to paint a crew figure - it’s not great but in 1:72 I don’t have the talent to make this better.  Just about managed to get the facial hair to represent Lemmy.

That was so cool when Airfix released that last year. I still would like to pick one of those up. Also, the Revell Iron Maiden Spitfire as Maiden are my favorite band. Motorhead were freaking awesome! Saw them in 1984, 1986, & 2003. This year is the 40th anniversary of Ace of Spades.

Model finished.  Yes, I did rush it somewhat, but I wasn’t too bothered about making this my best build.  Despite what I said before, there was some fettling to do - but not much - and a spot of filler here and there would be needed for a better finish, along with canopy masking etc.

The worst thing about the kit was the decals.  Nothing particularly wrong with them, but the instructions called for the “Motörhead” wording to run across the underside of the wings centrally, and under the fuselage.  The engine nascelles and weapon stations don’t really allow for this.  So I cut the decal and applied to either side upper wing surface instead, and the band’s logo on the undersides.   The decal for either side of the fin/rudder assembly didn’t allow for the rudder control linkage, so again these had to be cut.

Not my best effort by any means but it has served its purpose.!  May take better pics another day.
