I HATE moving
« on: December 07, 2012, 09:44:05 AM »
G'day, All.

First up- thanks for all the great build logs and photo's- they've been a great diversion over the last couple of days.

I'm now in my new home, most boxes have been opened, some unpacked and most of the furniture assembled.  T' Internet is sorted, more or less, and last night I opened up the boxes that contained my models.  Not too much damage done.  The Pfalz has sprung a couple of wires, so I may as well re-rig it, using microtube, as I'd been thinking of doing.  The J.1 came through unscathed, as did the SPAD XIII.  The stash kits all made it down without crushed boxes or other damage (yikes, has the stash grown in the last couple of months!).

Some other models didn't fare as well- my 90mm Marius Legionary is rather armless now, both pila broken off at the shaft and the gladius took ages to find.  Ironically though the 1798 French Field Forge in the same box was virtually intact (a bucket came off a hook), despite being as fragile as any WWI aircraft.  A few nearly-completed WWII kits lost propellers and similar  srticky-out bits, but nothing really unrepairable that I saw.  I'll post a couple of photo's once I find that elusive #$^^&* camera....

On the plus side it's very nice sitting on the beach with a small bucket of coffee, watching the waves and the birds (ornithological and human).  My propeller mask arrived from Radu yesterday- I'll assemble that next week- and my D.VII (OAW) and Hannover have been shipped.

Day 5, Week 2 of "retirement".  Lance and Gary were right- it's bloomin' hard work, this "retirement".  Back to unpacking and looking for that camera.

Cheers.

Dal.

  Dal,
What a mental image, old geezer with mirrored sunglasses just sitting on the beach watching the birds. The two legged variety of coarse. Ah that's the life my old friend.

Sorry to hear about some of your models not moving well. But it's great to hear nothing's irrepairable. Now all the real fun begins unpacking and setting everything right.Hope you find the camera, love to see the beach birds. Best of luck in your new home.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette

Merry Chrismas to you and your's

G'day, Gregory.

I found the camera- it was in the glove-box of the car, where I'd put it.  I won't be taking any photo's of the birds on the beach, sorry, I'm just going to enjoy their beauty- and try not to feel guilty about doing so!

Here's a couple of photo's.  The Legionarius had been damaged a couple of years ago and patched up, which may have contributed.  But he's got a definite backwards lean he didn't have before.  The field forge had a couple of bits knocked loose, but nothing broken, fortunately.  This photo' reminds me that I have to satin-varnish the bellows and do some little details and this will be finished.  I think I'll use the wood grain technique I've learned doing the Pfalz and J.1 as well, to dress up the draw bars and other bare "wood" bits.  The last is the first few WWII kits pulled out of the box.  I can't blame the removalist, either, as these two boxes travelled in my car.

Not to worry, it's all fixable.

Cheers.

Dal.

Hey Dal, where did you move to? Sorry to see the bit of damage to your models but looks like nothing too serious, all fixable.

You will have to PM your new phone number to me.

Hi Dal,
 I feel your pain, mate!

I have just moved into a new home and although things ran fairly well there was one major fatality. The glass exploded on one of my limited edition prints. The little shards of glass created some mild wicker work to the image. £750 gone in one stroke!

The joys of moving!

I can imagine that moving is a real pain in the posterior. On the other hand, we've been in the same house for 30 years and the basement is absolutely overrun with accumulated stuff over that time. Moving would at least be an impetus to do a major culling. As it stands now, it's just too easy to ignore it.

Cheers,

Chris

The dust is now settling, boxes are unpacked, more or less, the work bench is set up and I even did some work on my J.1 this morning.  The weather has been kind, staying warm but not too hot and I've even managed to work out a tentative truce with Michelle's cat (I think).  Had a coffee on the beach this morning.  Not doing any bird watching, just enjoying the sea breeze and and ocean.

Des, PM on the way.  It's my mobile number- send me a text and I'll call you.

BvB, OUCH!.  Mate, compared to what happened for your move mine was minor.  I got sick of moving in the army as no matter how careful you are, there's always something damaged or missing.  I had two bottles of Chivas' Royal Salute tucked away, for when my sons turned 21, that disappeared on one move.  Not surprisingly that move counts as the worst.  Let me know when you're open for business again, mate.

Chris, I know what you mean.  We had the fortune to stay in one quarter for 10 years and it was amazing how much stuff can "gather".  Or what you'll find when you're sorting through it all.

Cheers, Gents.

Dal,
Your comment on Service moves brought back many memories, not all of them good. A pair of "flagons" of Royal Salute is very serious business indeed! I recall the disappearance of four small binders containing 5 or six dozen Aircraft in Profile booklets purchased in Ireland and the UK on my duty visits there in the 60's, a sad day indeed. All I have today are two editions I'd tossed in the luggage for study during the journey, I suspect the mover who grabbed them had no idea of their value to me at least.
Hopefully in your case the "The Macallan" was available as a good substitute! Always look on the bright side..........
Cheers,
Lance ;) :(

When I move in a few years I believe it will be kits, supplies and books, which will be ridiculous enough, my lady friends yarns and books and the clothes on our backs. The rest stays with the buyer.

Today I can put my feet up and relax.  There's still some boxes to unpack, but they hold my kits and it's easiest to keep them in the boxes for now.  The treaty with the cat is holding, despite some minor skirmishing over who actually gets to sleep on my side of the bed and why my breakfast is not open for taste testing by felines.

Eventually we'll get there.

Lance, I replaced the bottles later on.  In the end I got one nip, that's all. They and their mates drank it, never knowing what they were mixing with coke and other pollutants. :'(

I know this may be sacrilege, but I prefer blended whiskeys to single malts.  The Macallan has an aftertaste I don't like, but then again the additives we put in our water has been blamed for that.  Perhaps I'd like single malts better if I used tank water from the farm?

Steve, I agree with Bob- that sounds like a brilliant plan!  I've already told 'Chelle that the next time I move it will be me that's in the first box.

Cheers.

Dal.

Dal,
Dated a Gal a million years ago who drank Scotch and Coke, what a waste! (Hell of a way to ruin good whiskey as well!) As for the water, I look upon a good whiskey as something not to be defiled by anything, including even an ice cube.
I too am looking at a move in the next two years at most, not looking forward to it other then to get somewhere warmer. I like your idea about the "first box" but on second thought, at my bloody age, I should be careful what I wish for!
Cheers,
Lance ;) :)

I was taught that you always cut single malts with a drop or two of plain water, mate.  Something to do with not stressing the palate, I believe.  I prefer my Scotch and Irish straight and sipped- no throwing shots down your throat, as you can't savour the taste.

I understand wanting to be warmer, mate.  Having been through an ice storm in Atalanta in '96, I know the "winters' we have here aren't real winters at all.  :-).

That's exactly what I meant, mate.  :D  I really hate moving..... :o
