EU Revell 1/72 SPAD XIII
« on: August 14, 2016, 11:29:11 AM »
Just got a Revell SXIII today.
I have Aircraft Archive aircraft of WWI, V1, and it has views by COX in 1/72 scale. When I center the cockpit on the drawing the front is 2mm to long, and the tail is 4mm to long. So much for this thing being 1/87 scale.

I'm not familiar with that one.
Your best bet is to get the aircraft dimensions (wing span and length) from a reliable source, convert those to metric then reduce to 1:72 and see if they match. I do that with all the Windsock Datafile plans and many of those turn out wrong also. I then rescale the plans to match up to the correct length and winspan.

I built the kit a few years ago. The top wing is too long. I just cut it down to size. It's an alright kit but very dated.

If you like scratch building or want to practice your skills, this would be a good place to start.

I built this kit several times when I was much younger and didn't care about scale plans  ;).
If today I would want to built a 1/72 SPAD 13, I'd go with the eduard kit and not the old Revell one...

Hi Pfalz Phan,
I agree with both Kevin and Borsos. While the Eduard is the pick of the bunch the Revell kit is not as bad as some commentators have implied. I built it not long ago and posted a demo build. The measurements are Imperial I'm afraid but you can see where Revell got the wing measurements from. There are a few different fuselage lengths as well. Hope this helps.

Regards, Steve

if you can get one of the eduard 1/72 profipaks or dual combos with the photoetch and multiple decal options it is to me one of the most detailed 1/72 kits i have ever seen. fantastic surface details and extremely well equipped interior. i was surprised at the fine moldings. eduard sure has let us(1/48 and 1/72) wwi fans down havent they.they could at least do a biplane every now and then instead of vomiting more bf 109s and spitfires. gad

I (sadly) agree 100%.

I have two Ed kits, but felt I had to have a go at the Revell.

I blame this MS build for showing what can be done with those dead dinosaurs :o

As for Ed and Roden etc "Where are the Pushers!".

Revell use to pimp three packs based on a theme...The Firsts..First Air to Air Kill, Voissin III , First Fighter Vicker Gunbus,...

Thanks for the links.
I want to build one of Frank Luke's SPADs. I read somewhere he flew a contractor SPAD.  Any info on his aircraft?

Thanks Simon, I stand guilty as charged for that MS build!
As I stated in my reply on your intro, I also have threads on here of the Nieuport 28, Hannover, and Roland builds that I did, and I'm doing the RE8 at the moment....
I'm glad you like the MS build, and I hope it and the others will be useful to you!

Your MS build was great.
What I have been doing is jumping back and forth from reference material to build threads to understand the details of these aircraft. Worse example was an Austrian R/C MS build that I mistook for a 1/1 copy,  ??? The beauty of your build thread to me, they are like after action reports, or a test flight, to see what works within the limitations of the air frame.
I will look up those builds you did on the N28, Roland, and CII. AIRFIX may not have made the best WW1 aircraft, but their crew figures were great.
My hope is to be able to make the crew compartment outside the plane for these builds, and then insert them on assembly.
