Anyone built an Eduard Stripdown?

Hi all,

Just wondering if these are any good? Worth a bash? I can imagine they could look incredible, but look super delicate to make with my clumsy fingers...

Yes!  But the one I built is an older kit - a 1/72 L-4 Cub.   The Stripdown kits start with a conventional injection molded kit to which Eduard adds the appropriate photo-etched parts.  In the case of the Cub it as an old KP kit and all the parts for the original kit were included.  Most of the airframe was replaced with PE and some surgery was required.  The more recent Stripdowns - the 1/72 Fokker Dr.1 and 1/48 DH-2 have Eduard's regular kits as their basis.   They are fun but very fiddly and delicate due to the thin brass parts.  I have the Dr.1 in my stash and hopefully will get to it one day.  Here are a few photos of my Cub in process and the final result.

Thanks Guy!   If you have access to back issues of Airfix Model World, Mike Grant did an excellent feature on the Stripdown Dr.1 in the August 2014 issue.  It was after reading his article that I was inspired to buy one.

I don't know about the 1/48 DH-2, but I have build the new Dr.! Sadly I don't have any pictures as it did not survive a house-move..
It is very fidly to build, but Eduard has made a very kit. There are resin formers to shape certain parts, mainly the leading edges of the wings. They work fantastic.
I made it some more difficult, I laced very thin white ez-wire through the wings as that is something you can clearly see in pictures of the wings without fabric. I don't know if it helped, but the wings were very firm.
This kit is very detailed, much more so then the old strip-down kits which I also build a life-time ago.
Not only the details on the photo-etch are much, much beter, the plastic and (resin) engine are much beter and even the instruction are much beter than teh old kits.
I made the old kits and sprayed them solid metal colours, they were fun to have in a display case, but the new kits is an amazing replica that can be made as a true skeleton aircraft.
I am temted to build an other some day if my eye sight holds up and maybe do a partly cover tith tissue paper or something like that.
Try them and you will not be dissapointed.
