Fokker D.III M19K (late) LVA 1917 Bo's Flugzeugwerke
« on: March 04, 2016, 07:17:35 AM »
Last monday I recieved a box with 3D prints for a late Fokker D.III designed by Bo. I was abroad and finally today I could unwrap all prints and there were a lot.

This is going to be build into a Fokker D.III of the LVA (Lucht Vaart Afdeling), a department of the dutch army in 1917. It was the second Fokker type that served in the LVA. The first was a Fokker A.1 that strayed into the Netherlands during ww1. Ten Fokker D.III's were purchased and delivered in 1917. All of these were equipped with ailerons. There have been a large amount of different Fokker types serving with the LVA and later the Klu and there are still Fokkers in service today.

The unpacking resulted in these parts:

The upper wing now has ailerons and in Bo's design he already included the hinges and with a short brass rod it can be connected easily.

Unfortunately I'll have to wait with the construction of the fuselage as it didn't arrive in one piece. The structure to support the upper wing was connected only at one spot and the rest is broken and in some small pieces. It is a clear packing mistake as it must have been intact after printing.

I wasn't sure where to post this, but I guess under construction is the correct place as it is a complete set of parts to produce a model.

I'm very happy that Bo is giving us the opportunity to make a beautiful model of the D.III and of course especially in this case that there is this late version as well, a kind of design on request!

regards,
Ivo

I'm really looking forward to seeing this kit go together Ivo, it is a great idea and should look spectacular when completed.

I'm very sorry to hear about the damaged fuselage, but I'm certain Shapeways will make you whole. They are pretty good about this kind of thing.

Will you use a Taurus Models Oberursel or WNWs?

Looking forward to seeing yours go together!

cheers,

Yesterday evening around 10 pm I filed a complaint and recieved a positive answer in reply. They had to check with the packing department, but had already produced an internal order to send me a replacement. Based on the pictures I had sent there was no discussion. That's service.

The Taurus Oberursel U.III has been waiting for over 2 years now as I recieved this kit shortly after it was produced. At that time my intention was already to mount it on a D.III somewhere in the future.  It hasn't been built yet, but my main worries are how to weather the engine. I don't have much experience in weathering. I'll have a look around here.

There is also a WNW E.IV somewhere in the mail between New Zealand and the Netherlands to provide inspiration for detailing the interior of the fuselage.

I started cleaning all parts. I don't have an ultrasonic cleaner, but used the water and dish water soap method in stead. The parts were cleaned easily, but the holes in the part necessary for construction remained full with the stuff. With the use of a 1mm drill these holes could be cleaned as well. I found my small reamers very useful in opening the holed for the wing attachment to the fuselage also very useful. Better to use reamers than drills in small and short holes, because opening or enlarging a hole with a reamer leaves the centre of the original hole at thesame location, where a drill sometimes makes a hole off-centre.

The pictures shown here in the topic's of Bo and mine don't do justice to the quality of the 3D design of Bo. If you can inspect them by yourself you will appreciate much more the quality of the design. I was impressed by the exactness of the wing profile on all ribs, the sharpness of the ribs at the trailing edges and the exact form of the leading edge. The prints however are delicate and fragile and should be handled with much more care than an ordinary styrene kit. I hope, as Bo promises, that the strength will enlarge with the internal rigging and the covering of wings and fuselage. I am also very satisfied with the exactness of the prints. The holes for connecting fuselage, wings etc., are all exactly at the right spot. If I can get the covering right, it for sure is going to build in a beautiful model.

I am considering inserting the actual operation of the elevator, rudder and ailerons, but I'm not sure if the structure will be strong enough. I also haven't found a clear indication on how the ailerons are actuated. I have seen how it works on the Albatros B.II, but I don't see external cables running on top of the bottom wing as you see there.

I'll post some pictures in support of the above later.

regards,
Ivo

Promised some pictures to appreciate the 3D prints a little more, but I'm afraid they are still a bit disappointing.

But to get the idea:

Cleaned upper left wing

Leading edge with convincing profile

Bottom of the wing showing the hollow profile. Will be nice for covering  ;)
