Capt. G.H. Lewis Se5a 40sqn
« on: December 08, 2015, 08:32:27 PM »
Hello,

I have a question regarding G.H. Lewis Se5a, option E from the WnW kit. I got this kit last weekend for "Sinterklaas".

The radiator has "the artful dodger" on it, in what appears to be a white field. Does the text go over the radiator ribs, or was a different style of radiator fitted? The sketch in the included SE5a squadron booklet seems to indicate that, but the photo of his machine in the book is taken from the rear... any other known pictures of this aircraft? Scraping off some radiator detail should not be too hard, but if possible I'd like to know if would be right to do so...

Thanks!
Jeroen

Hello Jeroen,
There is a photo of "the Artful Dodger" showing the radiator. It's in Wings Over the Somme by Gwilym Lewis. A better quality print of the same photo is in an old copy of Cross & Cockade GB. I don't have a scanner otherwise I'd send you a copy -sorry.
Needless to say that the illustration by Ronny Bar in the WnW instructions is spot-on. I think the text is painted on a nameplate fixed to th radiator.

Cheers,
Tony.

Thanks a lot for your help -might have to find me a copy of the book, from a quick google it seems an interesting read, too!
