WNW Junkers J.1 Info reqd
« on: October 22, 2015, 11:59:09 PM »
Hi Guys,

Got my my pressie early off SWMBO and am about to embark on a build. Looking at the available imagery & the Windsock datafile it would seem there are a few sketchy area's in the kit.  I was wondering if anyone with a greater knowledge than mine could shed some light on whats missing.. modded and was there various variations over production.

I've consumed Des's wonderful buld log and others I've found here and there of course.

A few things I've picked up or think might need tweaking apart from the well known aileron gap are:

The pilot seat fuel tank fills the fuselage width when in pics theres a clear gap each side, it also seems too deep lengthwise.

The round bosch switch is missing,

Theres a sliding door on the turtledeck behind the observers position on some AC.

Images of surviving  examples show filler caps on the right in front of the pilot's position

Also theres some pipe connections on some on the left of the rear section of the engine cowl

The radiator appears to have an adjustable flap arrangement hinged close to the radiator. I can't fathom out how it is activated though.

The radio apparatus looks a bit basic.

One thing of note is after building a few of WNW's kits is how much they've advanced since this the initial releases came out. Only now is it so obvious to me. Still its a magnificent kit all said.

First thing I did was construct the wing assembly to test for the fit issue between the sections but mine fitted nice, tight but not to put joints under stress. I did have a lot of warpage though on the tail planes and ailerons especially. Nothing  that wasn't easily fixed.

Cheers if anyone can offer some points or opinions.

RB TY for the reply.

Nice pointer to the gap, I've half decided to cut back just one corrugation on the main wing section or follow your lead. I hadn't noticed the corrugation in the joining strip  but thanks to you I'm now aware... this area is where the actuator would be and would be open? though covered with the strip. A trip to my semi-local model shop for some 0.60" half round  Evergreen should be about the size for the basis of that.  I've experimented with disposable aluminium baking tray for the cover strip and it seems to work well. I had thought beercan but its slightly too short.

Found there shoud be an access door under the chin to reach the oilpump on the engine today.  I really should stop looking and actually concentrate on one part of her at a time... like that will ever happen? ;D

RB.

I cut the old cover off too how I replace it I've still to decide but I get what you mean.
Have you noticed the airleron has less of a brick like look in cross section too. It's actualy got a aerodynamic profile.  The front edge of the counterbalance is way too thick. I'd aleady cemented mine together so cut back with a razor saw to a point about half way and thinned the front that way, clamping and glueing it back together gave it something of a profile like in the images on WNW website (Archive) pics thinning the over thick capping around the edge helped too.

As I seem to have inadvertently started building this kit, I'll now start a proper build thread in the 'Under Construction' section.

Jahowl!

You'll find the more you look at the rad assembly the more you will see things a bit wrong. the width of the shroud itself is way too fat. Plus the bottom actually looks to me like hinged flaps that adjust to regulate airflow to the rad. I'm dodgily scratching a whole new rad assembly.  On  the WNW site theres some rather nice shots of the back of the rad, to my eye the hose connections are too far off centre on the kit itself.

Hope to find time to start a bit of a blog myself before I start painting.
