Propeller question
« on: September 19, 2014, 07:47:41 AM »
What kind of prop would a late model Fokker D VII F have?  Reason I asked is I'm going to order a after market wooden prop and they have so many styles, I'm not too sure which one is correct.

thanks
Robert

Have a look at the Wingnut Wings instruction booklets over at their website. They normally include four propellers in their kits.

Here is a website showing two original Fokker props.  The interesting thing is that neither of the Fokker D.VII props carry a logo decal, and they seem to be stained a single color, or maybe due to the age of the wood the lighter color wood has darkened over the years.  Do not look much like the new reproduction props I have seen.

I think there was a good deal of variation; the photo record seems to bear this out.

Somewhere buried deep in Koloman's aerodrome OEFFAG D.III build log there was a long, detailed discussion about the lumber that was available in wartime Germany, as well as the species that were favored for propeller making, and what was substituted for same after the inevitable shortages. IIRC the dark/light laminate props weren't for looks; it was an exigency forced by lack of ideal lumber, so a compromise was made combining a fairly lightweight species, with a denser, stronger one...
