French Blue RAF Wires -
« on: December 26, 2013, 03:17:13 AM »
The Salmson uses horizon blue RAF wires.  I had an idea on coloring these.  I am going to cut my pieces of Sullivans elastic and dye these in blue dye.  Hopefully I can determine how long to let them sit to get the shade correct-ish.

Using dye may be the way to go as painting prior to attachment would have the paint flake off as the material is stretched.  painting after attachment will require a steady hand and post-it notes to mask the wings.

I wonder if there is a silver or grey dye for RAF wire?

Never tried it but would a silver sharpie work to color silver wires?

I think that dying may work better in terms of the stretching.  The RIF dye website has a recipe for silver (mixing 2 of there dyes and water) and one that may work for the Frech primer blue (bleu).  I am going to try the silver recipe on a few pieces and let folks know.
