Straying away... PT Boat to blame
« on: May 30, 2013, 02:08:01 AM »
Hi all if you are wondering why I've gone a bit quiet...or not... ;D

Just came into possession of a Italeri 1/35th PT boat kit in a moment of weakness. The £20.00 below list price didn't help and I've already spent more than that on *other essentials*

I won't be far and will check in and post and comment and of course be available to help. But for the moment my fingers will be fiddling with waterborne wood instead of airborne.
Italeri  isn't quite WNW standards  so it's helping me appreciate just how lucky we are these days.
I've a new DVIIF for my up and coming birthday and any progress I make on my current hangar full of builds will be posted.

  Keith,
As a certified PT boat fanatic myself let me say Welcome Aboard my old friend. I've been building PT boats every since a saw PT-109 way back in 1963. If you need any type of references or drawings please let me know. I've collected shelves full of PT and MTB information I'd gladly share with you. I have the the PT-596 and the 109 kit myself along with the new Vosper. All three are gathering dust at the moment but when the mood strikes again yet another boat will slip into the brine.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette

PS: Where's the build thread Modelshipwrights ?

Gregory... you might soon wish you hadn't said that ;)

This will be the buildblog but as you see already swimming in murky water and  at a loss for info. And yes I started dissecting the kit as you may expect. I'm hoping to model something a little earlier than 1945. But like everything I've no idea what changed and when. I can however really recommend the Bofors from Bronco though if you ever want to detail  up a PT build.

Heres my effort anyway. Already asking for info. http://www.kitmaker.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=SquawkBox&file=index&req=viewtopic&topic_id=207975&page=1#1745699

Best regards

I've not really been interested in too many boat kits, but those Italeri models are one of the exceptions. Maybe because of the larger scale, or maybe because of the docks that you can get to build up into a diiorama with them... Anyway, I'll be interested in your progress on this one :)

Maybe you can slip a Mercedes D.III in among those Packard V-12s :)

I will follow your log with great interest... humming the theme from McHale's Navy the entire time  ;)

cheers

  Bo,
Might not be too much of a stretch my friend. Those Packard V-12s are upgraded marine versions for the of the Liberty V-12 Aero Engines from WW I.
Not related to the Packard V-12 of WW II which was a Packard built version of the famous Rolls Royce Merlin V-12. Like you I'll be following along great interest too. Only I'm humming "Anchor's Aweigh"

I've already got more parts than I started with.... ::) Hope to get some pics on the blog this weekend.

Never do anything simple... seems to be my motto and  crikey what a minefield of changes... laughs.

Hello Keith:

So many areas on this forum.  I just now started looking over this thread.  It explains the lack of progress on your DVII.  I am doing that one as well and was looking for some pointers from you, sadly...........you are now doing a PT boat.  No worries.  I purchased the Encore Olympia Special edition with all the bells and whistles.  Haven't touched it yet, but...........one of these days.  I also have the old Revell English Man of War my brother got me for Christmas in about 1973 or so.  I started it and that was it.  Again, one of these days.
I will check in from time to time to see how you are doing.

Best

Mark My DVII is sitting 89% done, any questions do feel free to ask of course. I've the DVIIF sitting waiting to start too but 20 days before I can, its a birthday present which is cruelly loitering on the dining room table so I can see it each time I pass.

I thought this PT boat was going to be a quick assemble and paint but curse the internet.....so many mods you can do  ::)

Hello Keith:

Boy do I know what you mean by "Curse The Internet"!  Sometimes, too much information can be a bad thing and take all the fun out of it!  I did the Tamiya Enterprise, CVN 65.  Started looking at the all the information and realized all the 'problems' with the kit.  I just built it.  Did the best I could and went from there.  Had I got down in the weeds with it, I would still be looking at all that plastic.  I saw a guy doing mods on the kit you are working on, the same site too, probably the same guy.   Needless to say, I won't be adding one of these to my kits collection soon.

I am plodding ahead on the DVII.  I really like the scheme and I did take your approach by leaving the cockpit out of the fuselage and decaling and painting.  Had I not seen your build log, "Curse the internet", I wouldn't have lozenged the fuselage.  OH well, it will be that much neater for it.

Looking forward to seeing your PT boat on the "stump".

Take care

Mark
