Gotha G.IV K Roden 1/72
« on: February 15, 2026, 03:24:20 AM »
Hi!

Soon ready, just some smaller painting and washes to be done, more pics to the completed models section in a few days. For the reference i used especially the well_known film clip, where they start the engines of the K and frustratingly the clip always ends just before the Gotha takes to the air. There are several versions of the clip in the youtube documentaries, usually rather soft and blurred. But there is a very good quality version of it in the old BBC ww1 documentary series from the early 60?s. I have it on VHS and you can see a few nice details better than in the internet versions. Actually you can see them in those too, if you know what to look for.  Almost every photo ( and there are not many) of the K seems to show just one fuel tank on the top wing, which confirms that the photos are from the first raid to England by the England Geschwader, because that was the only raid where they used just one wing tank and needed to top up the tanks on the way at Nieuwmunster.

The film clip is clearly from a later raid as the plane looks a bit worn now and has the two wing tanks. It also does not have the mud guards at that point. Also the (most likely) red section on top of the rear fuselage seems to have rounded corners in front end.

But more later

Cheers, Skyhook

Thanks, Paul!

Btw, the BBC series seems to be in the youtube too, the picture quality is passable. The very short but interesting Gotha clip is in the episode 20, at about 30 mins. It is a great series, indeed. The interviews are fascinating, the people are only in their 60s and 70s, so they can remember things very well and tell them well too

Thanks all!

And Rip, it is indeed a great document. The style and narration is of its time and there's quite a bit claims that have since been noted to be very debatable, but the interviews are the main attraction. For example, it is fantastic to see and hear the man who made the very first reconnaisance flights in RFC to the front and how he tells how the generals really didn't take him seriously when he was reporting to them. Amazing document of history
