Fokker EIV with pilot figure
« on: January 16, 2026, 05:06:30 AM »
Since I finished my Nieuport 28 build I have focused on painting figures. Here's one of the first I tried, it's a Wings Cockpit Figures pilot with puppy. I think it goes well withthe Eindecker.

I always intend to paint figures for my aircraft models but I never seem to have the time.....

Well that figure (and dog) turned out beautifully Nigel. I'm very impressed with your overall blending and colours. Was this another combination of acrylics and oils? The figures certainly enhance that excellent build on the Fokker EIV which is one of my favourite models of yours (nice to see it again). Looking forward to seeing more of your figure work.
Cheers,
Gary

Thanks very much Paul, Gary and Steve, much appreciated!

Thanks Gary, I've been practising my figure painting and am starting to get a workfkow that gives consistent results with acrylics. Getting to grips with the wet palette has been key to getting good blends on the acrylics for me. For leather, I've adopted an approach of underpainting with acrylic and then using oils on top (the coat, gaiters, shoes and flying helmet were painted in this way).

I've got more figures on the way, currently working on a Napoleonic figure and then I have one of the large scale Aviattic Luftkrieg 1919 figures to do (which will be something different for me....).

Superb addition to your cracking Fokker Nigel.
How do you make a splendid model even better -add a tiny, real man to it!

You've painted them to an excellent standard Nigel. I could just imagine that dog going nuts each time he got back from a sortie.

Thanks very much Sandy, Alan and Joerg. I can imagine the dog going nuts, I went slightly nuts trying to paint him, not done any dogs before...... ;D

Figures are a nice addition to aircraft models, they add a bit of "life" and also give a sense of scale. Mike Norris does a great job doing this. I have loads of pilot figures in the stash and always intend to do a figure or two with each model but the next project always seems to take precedence....

Nigel, I'm astonished that this dog and dude are one of your first figures. It's turned out really great. Figures seem to me like they must require a completely different skill set. Asps, very dangerous...

Thanks very much Warren, but this isn't my first figure, I've been painting them since the 1970s! ;D I should have been clearer in my explanation.... I mainly build aircraft, AFVs and even dioramas so my figure painting gets pushed into the background. Over the last year or so I have been trying to improve my figure painting skills, and since last November I've been focusing on figures rather than any builds. So this was the first figure of a number that I have been doing since last November.
