221 Squadron DH.9 - Fighting the Soviets
« on: September 08, 2025, 06:14:13 AM »
Hey Guys

another one finished after a bit of a drought of builds or at least photos of builds, today I present a model of 'D2854' of 221 squadron RAF, based upon a photo of this aircraft stationed at the town of Petrovsk in Russia during the campaign against the Soviets. This aircraft had a fairly interesting life, beginning its career with 222 squadron around Mudros in Greece before eventually finding its way to 221 Squadron in 1918 and moving to fight the Soviets during the Russian Civil War where the aircraft was photographed. Beyond this im unsure of its career but I would hazard a guess that it was either turned over to the White Russians for use by them, Captured by the Soviets or Burned by retreating British Forces.

The eagle eyed among you will have also noted that this DH.9 is fitted with a rather lovely 4 bladed DH.4 prop kindly made for me by Alexey at Proper Plane. There is some conjecture around the sole photo of this aircraft if the prop is the result of a dodgy edit but tracing back this aircrafts history led to another photo of a DH.9 from 222 Squadron which is clearly fitted with a 4 bladed propeller so ive chosen to do the same for this build. The DH.4 and DH.9 both used Puma engines so the natural choice would be a DH.4 prop being used as a basis.

The Underside of this aircraft has been (for me) heavily weathered to reflect its heavy usage. Its something im working on so any extra tips or advice when it comes to the undersides would be appreciated

The aircraft base isn't the final one it will be displayed on and it was originally meant to be pilot and gunner but Unfortunely the gunner met with a accident and the replacement ordered from Modelcellar ive not heard anything about yet so the pilot is all by his lonesome

a big thank you to both Alexey for helping choose and making the propeller and Bjorn of Flying Bear Models for producing the templates for the paint masks for the arrows and 3 markings on this build ;D

What a great model!

I really love these British birds in PC10.

Although it's just one colour, you have managed to achieve varying tones.

The CDL also looks very good.

Well done!

Another lovely build and well done on finding out about the four-bladed prop, it sounds plausible to me and makes for an interesting variation. More lovely CDL work as well!

Beautiful! Is this the Roden 1/48 or WNW 1/32 scale?

It's WNW 1/32. Sam did a great job.
