1st build--a Neiuport 17 by Eduard

Hi All!!
I am new to building WWI and would like to build the Eduard Neiuport 17. A while back I got numerous hand-me-downs in 1/48 scale from one of our members on the forum. These thankfully came with extra goodies and decals.

The 17 seems a good starting place---- I have a Eduard Albie DII and DIII but I let my friend airbrush the fuselages as he enjoys doing this----however his paint was way too thick and it globbed into a orange peel finish. I don't want to mess with this problem until I get some experience under my belt-----very disappointing!

I do have some modeling experience as I am a HO model railroader. But struts and wires are a brand new experience!

You have chosen a good kit to start out with. The Eduard 17 has no major fit issues and builds up into a nice model! I am sure you will get all of the support you need. Don't hesitate to ask for advice as this group is very willing to share ideas!!

Good choice to start with, Andy.  The little Nieuport has rigging to be sure,
but it is not hard to do, so you should have little trouble with it.  It is good
practice before you tackle more complicated models.  And as a bonus, you
end up with a gorgeous aeroplane.

A lovely choice Andy. Few aircraft convey the delicacy and beauty of the early machines as well as the Ni.17 and I found the Eduard model a pleasure to build. Good luck!

This will be a great start for you Andy, the Nieuport 17 is a wonderful little aeroplane in any scale, I'm sure you are going to thoroughly enjoy the experience and please remember, we are here to help if need be.

coincidentally my first plastic ww1 model was an eduard nieuport 17. it is a sweet little kit and is pretty easy to build. the rigging isnt really hard either and the strut array makes upper wing placement a breeze. i would glue the "v" struts to the upper wing and the cabanes to the fuselage. after this is dry it is a cinch.

on solving the albatros problem there is a product called scalecote http://www.modeltrainstuff.com/Scalecoat-Model-RR-Paint-10568-Wash-Away-Paint-Str-p/smz-10568-wea-10568.htm which strips paint from models without damage to the plastic. i have also had luck with 91% isopropyl and simple green all purpose cleaner. use a stiff brush like an old toothbrush to scrub loose the gobs then take a sharpened toothpick to get stubborn paint from corners and recesses.

I have a beginner question---how do you get Scotch (cellotape) tape goo off of plastic parts and clean them up?

Also do I begin by painting the interior? What color is doped silver fabric on the inside of the fuselage? I would assume that the silver would be the last coat of dope on the fabric so the interior fabric color would be a clear doped linen?

I would think that nail polish remover (acetone) would do the trick without being too hot for the plastic.

You could also try some 91% Isopropyl Alcohol (the stuff they sell in hardware shops as a cleaner).  It eats paint, so dab it on with a cotton bud/ Q tip and leave for a minute, then rub off the glue and finish with a bit of water.
