Nieuport XVII Late 1/32 - Copper State Models
« on: April 10, 2025, 06:52:09 PM »
It's finally time to get back to building a WW1 plane!

This will be my 3rd WW1 plane and first CSM WW1 plane kit. I hope I choose a somewhat simple kit to get back into things  :)

Lately I have been having a bit of modeling ADHD - just a hard time staying focused on longer builds - losing motivation and looking to move on to the next kit. I have pretty much been building and completing a kit every 3-5 weeks, so will be interesting to see how this one turns out  ::)

I will be taking inspiration from Allyman's build on YouTube and trying to keep the build pretty much "out of the box".

Looking forward to watching your build.

Thank you very much Kreston!

However I fear that this Nieuport may crash before it is even started.
I started prepping parts for wood grain and the cockpit and quickly noticed something with my sprues...

Lots and lots of flash, some parts broken - others like the struts seem not fully formed?
Even a sink mark on the propellor  ???

I'm not sure if i want to put myself through the frustration or if I should just bin the kit and pick something else. How did your kits look?
This has not been my experience with the 2 other CSM kits I built.

Notice the 3 bands on the strut.

I'd send those pictures to Edgar at CSM. I have several of their kits and have not experienced that.

Wow, that's not like any CSM kit I have had. Like Kreston said, I would get in touch with Edgar.....

So I took your advice and wrote to CSM / Edgar.

Turns out they switched factory at some point. One of the reasons can be seen in my images - the quality.

Im wont be going into details, but I found more issues when I was working on the kit last night. It's not that the kit cannot be built, but it will take many hours to sand, fix and restore details.

So the bad news - im not going to build the Nieuport XVII. Personal choice of not being up for the task - it would have been too much of project.

The good news - Edgar / CSM offered to send me a Nieuport XI instead (their new kit). This is an above and beyond service that I really appreciate!
I feel a bit guilty about this, because I know how important it is to support companies like CSM. I want them to succeed so we can have many more kits in the future.
I will have to make it up to him and buy more stuff in the future  ;)

So for now I have to look what else I have in the stash  :)

I received my Nieuport XI from CSM - it's just a wonderful looking kit  ;D

I opened up the kit and looked at the first sprue... Hmm this looks very familiar..
Looked at the corner tag Nieuport 17... Strange I would not think the new XI kit shared component with the XVII.
Picked up the next sprue... Also a 17 marking...

Wait a minute! The good people at CSM put in 2 new sprues for the Nieuport XVII with the new kit!  :o ;D

Wow! What a exciting surprise! Very thankful to CSM! It means I can build this kit afterall!

I definitely owe CSM a few more orders in the future!
