Picked up a couple of the new KP kits at the recent Romsey show and was so excited about the Ansaldo SVA 9/10 that I started prepping parts and sorting out replacements for a few of the details although the main parts looked very nice without too much flash and the wings are nice and thin.

I didn't have the Windsock publication on the shelf, but ordered one especially and was disappointing when I laid the wings and fuselage over the plans. The wing chords are well undersized (around 4- 4.5 mm average) and the fuselage is some 5 mm short in length. Given the wing rib spacing and span look correct it's a bit of a shame because it would be difficult to change.
I can see that a spacer in the rear of the fuselage would bring it up to length without too much work but for me the wings sadly mean mine will be going in the spares box rather than being built  :(
(I know the plans in the Windsock are sometimes awry, but using the photos as a guide it does look like the wings are too narrow to use)

Shame really

Not that this has anything to with the kit itself, but as an artist I noticed that the box art on all four utilizes the exact same view of a 3D model of the aeroplane, rendered with different markings/color schemes (and altered with the addition of floats and a vertical stab on the last one).

Not something 99 people out of a hundred would probably pick up on, just the way my brain is (cross-)wired. That technical quibble aside, it really is lovely artwork and will hopefully sell a lot of kits for KP.

Thanks Paul for your comments against the datafile. I did a review of this kit recently (https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=14524.0) but I did not have the datafile to compare to. I'll add your comments to the review.

Of note, these moulds and errors are not entirely of KPs doing. As I mention in my review:

"Recently, KP have been utilising previous releases of other manufactures as the basis for their kits. From what I can see, the SVA9 and SVA10 moulds used by KP here have not been based off the Choroszy Modelbud or RVHP kits. Doing a little snooping, I have determined that these moulds are based upon the AZ Models SVA5, with the fuselage parts modified for the enlarged dual seat cockpit (valid given the SVA models were all based off the same basic airframe), the wings / parts sprue being the same as the AZ kit, and an additional sprue added for the interior and additional weaponry".

It's not to make excuses for KP; their strategy on a number of kits recently has been to re-tailor other manufacturer kits.

Dutch - I noticed the same thing on these boxes as well as the boxes on their Nieuport and AGO releases; same 3D model and angle for the box art, just tilted different ways with different 'skins'. Saves in making more than one 3D model, I guess!

Cheers,

It might be worth calculating the correct dimensions from the datafile numbers and then comparing to the plans. It's not unknown for printing errors to result in incorrectly sized plans in Datafiles. Sometimes even differences between plans and profile measurements. I have the kit, I'll try to measure it up when I get the chance.

Definitely worth a look when you get the chance Ian.
I compared to the side profile photos and the plans seem visually about right although I always treat them with a degree of circumspection and use photos for primary reference where possible. (As you said several Datafiles have had plans go awry at the printers and corrected versions of the plans have appeared in Windsock magazine)

Just to be clear the comments weren't a dig at KP who's kits I buy regardless because I'd rather a manufacturer be producing WW1 models than not, but more a caveat to any potential builders  :)

I wonder about one thing, why aircraft shown on first scheme and described as "Chile" has Uruguayan air force markings?
Fan of aviation from Eastern Europe 1917-1923 (mostly), as proved by avatar - "Krakow" air markings from November 1918.
