Billy Bishop's SE5 A8936 (60 Squadron)
« on: June 14, 2024, 10:58:29 PM »
Finally got some time to sort out the Billy Bishop figure for my SE5 (NOT SE5a!) build.

I'm not much of a figure painter but the Model Cellar 1/32 pilots are such characterful works of art that even a 'dauber' like me can be fairly pleased with the results with some acrylics and oils. It's just a shame they are fairly rare/expensive these days - but I've got a boxfull of their other pilots unstarted that'll keep me going for some time.

Full build log is over here
https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=14217.0
but in short the kit is the Roden 1/32 Hispano SE5a with some major modifications to the nose, radiator, exhausts, u/c, etc to back-engineer it to the SE5 A8936 at the time 60 Squadron first go them and painted them in distinctive Red, Yellow and Blue raiment for the A, B & C Flights respectively. I'd love to do a Red and a Yellow one too - but we'll see!

A very clever conversion project resulting in something a bit different, Sandy.

Brilliant work!

Very nice.  Looks great!

Thanks for the compliments on our figures.  I'm glad you like them.

re:>> It's just a shame they are fairly rare >>

Not sure what you mean by rare.  Except for 2 or 3 that are currently unsavable due to the deteriorated rubber molds, I've got them on my shelf, and they are readily available on our website.  And If I don't have one, I'll make it for you because I do all my own casting.

regards,
Paul

Thank you everybody for the kind comments.

And, Paul - great news. I hadn't seen them at the shows (my usual source) recently. I'll look harder (although I've got a half a dozen to keep me going!)

Only just found this: that is a super conversion (and I really like conversions) - with a super pilot figure. The colour scheme is very colourful for an RFC machine - great to see something different like this.

Brilliant, Sandy, as always, that figure really sets the S.E. off!

Back In the Day, when I was Eric Hight's webmaster and he used to send me each Copper State kit as it was released so I could photograph and post them on the website, I gave serious thought to doing either this aeroplane or Cecil Lewis's with the canopy (before they were ditched by unanimous consent). But I wouldn't have done as good a job as you have with this one.

I don't know how I missed commenting sooner! Your SE5 was a terrific conversion and the figure is well done....especially for a "Dauber"  ;D

Outstanding results!
