Title: Friends and Foes (FINISHED)
Post by: iwik on October 14, 2018, 04:55:56 PM
Hi y'all!
For a contest concerning WWI subjects on a french forum, I decided to paint a Model Cellar figure that I had modified by replacing its legs with the lower ones from the Billy Bishob figure, and completing the fug boots with its sheep skin rolled down as I saw on a picture in an Osprey book.

(https://preview.ibb.co/gutkde/IMG_3048.jpg) (https://ibb.co/eMHBJe)

It will be displayed in front of a homemade little scene looking a lot like what MC is also offering:

(https://preview.ibb.co/gpWuoe/modelcellar.jpg) (https://ibb.co/ikFLTe)

I'm posting the photos as they come, you will figure out the chain of event. If you have any questions... ;)

(https://image.ibb.co/nbh0Bz/IMG_3054.jpg) (https://imgbb.com/)

Here is a little thing I did to show what paints I used for the shadows process.

And this shows roughly how your paint + water mix must look like on a newspaper sheet (top too diluted, middle quite right, bottom not diluted enough)

First and second shadows:

(https://image.ibb.co/ijszte/IMG_3053_1.jpg) (https://imgbb.com/)

Then with end up with the lips, eyebrows and hair.

The color of the maternity pattern service dress is really hard to catch. You will find several pictures of the same dress from different angles showing really extreme hues, going from dark Brown to light green. It's just a nightmare. So I opted for a yellow green 881 as a base, and added russian uniform and then a touch of black for the shadows, and added yellow camo 978 with more and more kaki yellow for the lights.

I've applied a red brick filter to break the uniformity of the overall greenish color.

(https://preview.ibb.co/ejhrtp/IMG_3049.jpg) (https://ibb.co/fGHPDp)

Don't forget the same shadow/light treatment on the cap:

(https://image.ibb.co/kQ0Y69/IMG_3050.jpg) (https://imgbb.com/)

(https://preview.ibb.co/dNABtp/IMG_3051.jpg) (https://ibb.co/fvmjDp)

Concerning that last picture, no I wasn't tipsy. It's a good idea to put your fig upside down to get a good look at what you've done with the shadows, as the eye is not used to seeing them at the top. This way you will notice them better.

See you soon!

Nice work. Turned one of my figures upside down an it looked terrible. Definately a good way to get a fresh perspective!

Hi y'all!

The maternity dress is completed, the hands have received their baser coat of Sand Brown, and I've added some matter on the sides of the fug boots to be closer to what can be seen p15 of Osprey's Snipe and Dolphin Aces of WW1.

(https://preview.ibb.co/kQFfrL/IMG-3055.jpg) (https://ibb.co/cBQ25f)

I'm also changing the name of the post to "Friends and Foes" by adding to the scene Black Dog's wounded German Pilot.

Hi y'all!

I'm done 98% with the RFC pilot. Just have to add the cane (when I'm done with the base) and add the cigarette and its smoke.

Hi y'all!

The follow up with the coat.

First the shadows:

(https://preview.ibb.co/dEAh2q/IMG-3327.jpg) (https://ibb.co/fuTD8V)

Here's another detailed diagram showing the principle of the layering of different colors to represent the deepening of the shadows, here on a much bigger scale and thus quite crude, but you get the idea...

(https://preview.ibb.co/jtumTV/IMG-3328.jpg) (https://ibb.co/bQNvNq)

And on with the lighter shades:

(https://preview.ibb.co/dzV4FA/IMG-3329.jpg) (https://ibb.co/iOZWvA)

In the wake I've painted the white sling and the shoes. The leather gaiters have received their base coat.

Hi y'all!
I've done the gaiters and started with the lights on the leather jacket. Curiously, those seem white on the pics but they are more yellow/cream.
