Very glad to see you starting this one, Frank! I've got this kit (with the sadly empty flask), the Hisso and Viper kits and the night fighter boxing, so 5 in all. I've got one on the bench now (just interior wood painted) and I also intend to do a Home Defense fighter, the one flown by Gilbert Insall, VC. I'll be following yours closely as a guide for mine.
Cheers,
Bud

Glad to see you on this one Frank. That radiator looks magnificent and you are right, it is a kit on its own.
-
That radiator is stunning, Frank! Since the radiator is so prominent on the S.E.5a, the overall appearance of the model will be greatly enhanced by the extra work you put in to it. Bravo!
Cheers,
Bud
-
Wonderful Frank. This will be another beauty on your shelf. I really like the care you put into the radiator.
Andreas
-
Promises to be a great show, the radiator looks fantastic.
Giuseppe
-
Wow, Frank! That radiator looks real! To think it's in 1/48th... quite magnificent! I'm already totally hooked on this build!
Regards,
Marc
-
Frank, who's paint is that brass from, it really looks the part.
Ryan
-
As Monty has written, that radiator looks real. Why will the slats not work?
That will really make viewers take a second look when the model is completed.
Stephen.
-
Thank you my friends for your great feedback!
I hope to being able to finish this build after the actual restart. Last year I was bit surprised and somehow overstrained by the huge amount of small parts. So at that time it looked to me "a bit over engineered", and after the wood painting with oils, which needs some time to dry I lost the drive and started something different (Pfalz Triplane I think).
In meantime I prefer to do wood painting with acryls, so I can continue quickly.
Frank, who's paint is that brass from, it really looks the part.
The radiator was the last action last year, this was done with Alclad "Pale gold", with a some drops "polished brass". Polished brass alone cannot be touched, it needs sealing.
Today I often used MRP-150 Brass, but this alone is sometimes a bit yellow, so I spray a thin layer of Alclad Pale gold on top of that.
As Monty has written, that radiator looks real. Why will the slats not work?
Stephen, this damn small slats are made from full resin (no look through) and are not single PE blades. I will forward your complain to Eduard, may be they will provide me a new working version. But in 1/48 the are feeling overburdened with such request, I guess ;)
Cheers,
Frank

Superb propellor Frank. What wood do you use for that? I would be very interested as I may recarve the propellor for the Gunbus but I do not know what to use or where to get it. Any information would be most welcome.
Stephen.

Thank you, Marc and Stephen!
Stephen, please jump to my neighbor thread of the Siemens-Schuckert, I explained it very detailed last week:

Beautiful start Frank,
Just out of interest...

Ps I really ought to get the kit, but I think the heavy rib tapes on the wings put me off slightly, what’s your interpretation of them from seeing them up close?
Guy
-
More outstanding work. Have you put any magnesium into the tubes? It looks as though you might have done!
Stephen.
-
Thank you! :-*

The rib tapes are not so prominent as on the Siemens-Schuckert D.III. If you don't like them, it should be easy to sand them away.
I will try to show pictures with the next update soon.

Stephen, that would be much to dangerous! If someone presses the starting button of such flare during a exhibition :o It simply burns to hot!
;) ;)

Wonderful work on the cockpit Frank, and it's detailing is incredible for 1:48 Scale. The contrasting wood shades are a very nice touch as well, beautiful work!

Frank You really know how to show what can be done with skilled hands.
Ryan

Lance and Ryan have summed it up - incredible detail for a 1/48 scale kit, and super painting - the wood really does look real.
Stephen.

Coming along quite nicely Frank, looks bigger than 1/48.

Very nice, lovely detail work.

very nice job

Got to agree with what the others have written - just incredible detail and wonderful painting. A good recovery for the tail serial too - it is so annoying when that sort of thing happens.
Stephen.

Nice recovery on the 3. Your details and painting are superb! Really coming together in an Awesome Way!

I completely agree with Rick: just stupendous work on this model.
Stephen.

Wahnsinn.
You get better and better with every kit. I am keen on seeing that one for real.
Andreas
-
Manni, Rick, Stephen and Andreas - it is great honor and motivation to know you are watching! Thanks.
You get better and better with every kit.
Not always for sure!
On one hand I sometimes make stupid mistakes, for some things I'm a bloody beginner. So it is easy to get better for a while ;D
A man has to know his limits 8)
I am keen on seeing that one for real.
Then please reserve the 9/10 of March 2019! On this weekend I will show a big part of my collection in Fürstenfeldbruck (near Munich),
or 28 April 2019 in Wilnsdorf.
If you are in Munich some day please drop me a note to organize a visit!
Cheers,
Frank

Thanks Frank, I will. Congratulations again on such a wonderful Se5a!

This whole thread is brilliant!
Can you explain how you attached the stretchers and PE control horns?
I'm contemplating whether to get a generic fret of PE "stuff" for future builds.
I tend to have problems with things that stand proud from the skin of the model (e.g., control horns) pinging off into the unknown. CA really sucks at holding things on.
-
Hi Frank
I'm embarrassed to say that I looked at this log in progress but failed to comment. Amazing work throughout and a stunning outcome. Congratulations!!! Bravo!
Cheers

Awesome work on your Se5a, a very nice little nightfigther ,good job ;) ;)
-
Oh my friends, with moving over to the completed section I missed your answers here, Sorry!
And what a great feedback, Thank you all! :-*
Can you explain how you attached the stretchers and PE control horns?
The stretchers and the control horns has some pins, or I cut them from the fret, that there is a pin remaining.
I drill the a very small hole (Eduard says 0.3mm, buit I use even smaller drills found some time ago on ebay, e.g. 0.26x mm)
The I mount the horn with CA gel into the holes. Here in Germany I found some gel with the name "100% Sekundenkleber" means 100% CA, which works great.
Thanks again for all your nice words!
Cheers,
Frank

Superb work Frank. One of the best SE5a models I have ever seen, I am in awe of your talents!

I hope you will like my next biplanes too.

Terrific work, Frank. I have the Royal Class boxing of this kit and your build has answered a lot of questions for my future attempt at making it.

Sorry to keep digging up old build threads. I'm absorbing so much from them. This is a great build thread.
Re: the stretchers. Did you thread them first, then glue the stretchers into the mounting points? It has caused me to examine the kit closely and I see the spots where it's supposed to go. That's really elegant detail - does it work from an assembly point of view?
-

Thank you very much Phil, that is great feedback! So it is worth the effort of writing them.

Hmm, that was some time ago.
At least I drilled all positions before mounting. For the doubles there is a drilling template included.
I think I thread through one side, and glued already the other end to the end o the line (outside the model). Then glued both into the holes (secured with CA). After a short drying time I put tension on the rubber line and fixed it in the stretchers hole with a small amount of CA. Cut after 30 seconds or so drying time. That way you are not producing waste and your line last for more models :D
The SE.5a do not used turnbuckles!
Hope it helps,
Frank

This is a Great outcome, Frank, I am in awe! So much detail, so much to appreciate... Well done! Regards, Marc.
