Title: 1/32 Special Hobby Morane Saulnier Type N
Post by: Ryan on September 25, 2018, 12:17:47 AM
Iv'e been working on this kit from Special Hobby.

First up are some engine shots; it builds up from resin and PE parts. I added 50+ some scratch parts like valves, rocker arms and spark plugs.

And here painted up, weathering consisted of Tamiya Dark Brown panel liner over a Vajello Aluminum base coat. A fine toning of the Tamiya product shot though the airbrush tied things together.

Thanks gentlemen.

Onto the cockpit I tried something different in assembling most of the structure then detail painting afterward. I left out the seat and scratchbuit floor till later.

Very kind guys, the wood grain on the floor is Raw Umber Oil over Tamiya Desert Yellow. It took about 1/2 hour to get sponge pull I liked!

Hi Ryan,
Your 'Bullet' is coming along nicely - the cockpit detailing is very good.

Thanks Ryan. That's the same paint combo I normally use but I have to say your results outshine mine! I'll have to experiment with sponge vs. a brush for the oil streaks.

Lance I tried the brush but it left too faint graining.

The sponge I used was right out of the Gas Patch mg I'm using in the build.

Sandbagger I came across your model during my research, great build sir.

Boring update, but made progress sealing up the fuselage.

A large gap was filled with plastic at the back of the cockpit opening, the rest of the seams were sealed up with superglue.

I used a homemade mini sanding block instead of sanding stick to preserve the sharp edges of the stringers. These are pretty easy to make, just scrap plastic, tape and sandpaper. Double sided tape secures the sand paper to the face of the unit.

Thanks for checking in Monty, Stephen, and Jeroen and your comments are much appreciated.

Final fuselage seam prep was completed last night so it's time to stick more parts on! I did have a slight problem with the paint lifting just above the head rest.
As I sanded across the corner the paint became loose. I'm baffled by this as it has a solid coat of Tamiya primer under the paintwork. I will confess that the linen color I used
is Deck Tan from Vajello, this stuff wont stick unless primer is applied. The special Hobby plastic may be the culprit as it has slight waxy feel to it. I can say that I had to paint the stringers and natural metal inside the fuselage a few items to get it to look right and each time I laid tape on the parts I had no lifting problem what so ever..... My fix for the lifting paint was thin super glue wicked into the splayed open gap to re-stick the paint, it worked but this will be something I have to be very careful with moving forward.

Anyway back to the part sticking. The tail skid assembly arrived in the box minus a leg, it was broken off and nowhere to be found. Rummaging through my scrap styrene pile I found a rod that could take its place and glued it on. The new rod was perfectly round while the kits molded ones were imprecise and out of round. The fragile nature of this assembly forced me into gluing it to the fuselage and cleaning up after the glue set. The following pics are the part in is rough state before cleaning. It may also not be true to 90 degrees when looking straight on, this I can adjust with saw kerfs once its clean and set.

Work continues, as mentioned before I needed to true the tail skid assembly to the center line. My unorthodox method for this was to simply cut (2) of the legs and re-attach to align the structure with the fuselage center line. The final task was to re cement and reinforce the struts with super glue. I know butchery, but it works!

Once dry and sanded the evidence of the crime scene is not noticeable.

Great progress, Ryan! That tail skid support pylon looks problematic, I think replacement could be less work! But interesting comment about the plastic too - I've always felt that SH use a slightly different compound... Did your kit come with the MS badges? Mine has nothing and I'm not sure where to get some...

Monty,
The skid support was a kwik fix, no big deal.

The MS badge is not included with the kit, I bought some from Tom’s Model Works from here in the USA.

Hats off to the kit designer as the extremities of the model assemble very well with no jig required to get a nice stance.

Apparently the pilot had to flex the wings to turn and lift - remarkable. Do you know much about how that worked? Must have been very hard to fly...

Anyway just added one to my stash - on special at Special Hobby and very reasonable even with shipping to NZ. So I'll definitely be watching your updates from now on.

Cheers,
Alistair

Thanks Alistair, I agree it must have been an experience to fly one of these early wing warpers.

I'd pick up the Tom's Model Works MS photo etch also since the kit does not come with them.

Two things come together in this built report:
First, -  a very nice and finely implemented kit
and secondly, - a talented modeler who knows how to get the most out of this kit.
I have been laying this model uncut for many years on the shelf - a pleasure for me to watch you build.
Bravo, Ryan!

Very clean and careful build, Sir!
You are doing the hard work and doing all in plastic :o

A year ago I build it in 1/48 (https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=9110.msg166150#msg166150) and taking the easy way - I replaced round plastic parts directly with metal. No need to paint it :)

Under the heading of why is he showing us this?

As I was assembling the struts and V structures the sanding and filing needed changes the leading edge profiles of the strut. As you sand deeper into the leading edge the wider the strut will get, it could even vary in width from the top to bottom.

So I cant remember where I first learned this trick, but here it is. By painting the edge with a contrasting color you can see how much you need to sand the left and right sides of the strut to get a continuous edge. The more so sand the thinner the edge will get, the paint helps you gauge when to stop.

After a while you can get nice even edges.

The paint can then be removed with a little thinner or light sanding. BTW the only part I glued last nite was the wing warping crank!

last evenings work did not fail to keep me on my toes as I started attaching the photo etch elevator horns to the tail. First order of business was to drill out the holes that allow the rigging pass through the Morane's fuselage. I simply drilled directly down and then re inserted the bit at an angle to clear the oval.

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1918/30131016897_2559ffe194_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/MUzkzk)Morane (https://flic.kr/p/MUzkzk) by The 3rd Placer (https://www.flickr.com/photos/51690681@N03/), on Flickr

My technique for apply small PE varies but in this case it was a swabbing of Tamiya extra thin to soften the plastic and allow me to "plant' the horn in place. The wet plastic will give you enough time to position the part at the precise angle you need. To set the part I use cut down mini brushes and extra thin super glue.

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1949/30131016947_6090e66ee1_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/MUzkAc)Morane (https://flic.kr/p/MUzkAc) by The 3rd Placer (https://www.flickr.com/photos/51690681@N03/), on Flickr

And the result.

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1947/30131067207_069c3c9b33_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/MUzAwK)Morane (https://flic.kr/p/MUzAwK) by The 3rd Placer (https://www.flickr.com/photos/51690681@N03/), on Flickr

Of course just because I need the practice i managed to launch one of the horns into space and lost it for good! I carefully srcratched a replacement horn on plastic for the underneath...these things happen.

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1970/30131067427_0b3de747c4_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/MUzAAx)Morane (https://flic.kr/p/MUzAAx) by The 3rd Placer (https://www.flickr.com/photos/51690681@N03/), on Flickr

In the end I was quite pleased wit the result, it will be hard to notice it is a replacement piece once painted.

Since the plastic is very thin, I do worry about bending of the horn under load with rigging, but I have a plan for that.

As always thanks for reading.

Did a small rigging test on a scrap piece of plastic to see if it would flex, it seems to work just fine. Rigging is EZ Line with Vajello Black paint mixed with white glue for the turnbuckle (mounted to a bathroom plastic cup).

I am sure that nobody will notice the new control horn when it is disguised with a coat of paint. I also like your turnbuckle idea as I have been giving these a lot of thought recently: I may be trying yours out at some time in the future when I start to rig the Gunbus.

Back again with an update.

I managed to get the tail suck on, but before I did that I notched out a landing spot for the rudder horns. This way after painting and decaling they would have a nice recessed area to glue to.

First up was drawing the line, I kept symmetry on each side by using a piece of tape to hold the mark a determined distance equally on both sides.

The notch was made with a scribing tool to accept the previously measured horn,

Unfortunately I've had a bit of a problem correcting a self inflicted problem with the wings. I was trying to repair some over sanding I did on the leading edge with primer and it went south.

Hi Ryan
Just got my kit and liking the way it looks - and I will be keeping up with your build when it gets going again. I'll probably also pester you with questions...First off - did you use the supplied instrument "film" for the dials? And if so how is it applied? Straight away I don't get this as I have never encountered it before.

And could you give me the dimensions for your scatched floor? It looks like a very good add.

Sorry to bug you.

Thanks,
Alistair

Great news Alistair, here are some answers.

1. I tossed the film for decals, the reason I did this was twofold. First off the PE bezels designed to "cap off" the film would have never looked right (nor looked like they would even fit!), you already have a well for the dial to sit in why complicate it more. I went with Airscale decals and was satisfied with that, once cleared over the decals have a glass bezel appearance. If you do want to punish your self with the film, the idea is to paint the back of the film white the cut it to fit the instrument....no thanks!

2. The floor was sized to the built up cockpit frame, so I don't have dimensions. If you check out some earlier posts, I assembled the whole frame before painting.  The frame is hardly symmetrical or square, I just found it easier to design the floor fit it to the assembled frame.

You don't bug me, I hope my replacement wings show up soon.

Just thinking I'd do this kit next. So a question for one more experienced than me...do you anneal the PE parts as you would for brass? They look like some sort of white metal and I have no idea how to treat them?

To replace the rivets I got to use a tool I picked up at the US Nationals...the UMM Beading and Riveting punch. The punch produces round head rivets pressed out of thin metal. The goal was to replace the look of the SH kit rivets. I tested the sub miniature rivets on a section of sprue.

A dot of Testors liquid glue was placed where I wanted the tiny fastener to be located. The rivet was then punched and stuck on.
Did I mention they were small?

Setting the rivets wasn't too bad, but I did have to redo a couple of them. The glue doesn't bond them to the surface, just holds them in place till I can get some primer on them. I brushed some extra thin over them the rows to further melt them into the panel.

After primer I shot some linen color as I needed to blend the top of the roll over area above the headrest.

Whew...

IMO the primer is a tick too heavy, these macro shots are brutality honest! I plan to lightly buff with some 2000 grit to soften but in a normal viewing distance its not so bad. I really like the definition of the panel this technique yields. Also they do match the soft kit rivets which is what I was after. :)

That is one slick trick with the rivets, It opens up possibilities, like who cares about a few rivets, let me sand this smooth and then replace the rivets. Magic.  Thanks for sharing that one.

Thanks sir, I think next time I'll use white glue to secure till primer. The Testors stuff is a bit to hot. The punch does work as advertised though, I highly recommend it.

The rivets look outstanding to me. If you don't mind what punch are you referring to? Sorry if I missed the info.

RAGIII it's this one from UMM and thanks.

The hardest part is getting the punched disk to sit with the rounded side up after punching. The rounded ones seem to glimmer more than ones that are upside down!

That is some super fine detailed work there Ryan. At normal viewing distance I am not sure that I would see the rivets! The shape of the fuselage also looks OK from where I am sitting.

Hi Ryan , I must say that it is great too see you back on this build . Super job on replacing the rivet detail . I have those tools , well four of them . Pick them up from Ultracast here in Canada . Two sets of two . Two for 48 scale and two for 32 scale . They work really well for this . Do you mostly use Vallejo Model Air ?

Hi Terry,

Thanks for checking in, I am excited to finish this one up!

I mainly use Vajello but also paint with Tamiya colors. I will say the linen I used (deck tan) for this build is a Vajello model color (as opposed to model air) product and a little difficult to spray, from now on I will use Tamiya Deck Tan for this shade.

Lovely and meticulous build. I just started this kit and should have been smart enough to see what else was on the forum about it. You figured out the tail skid - I was mystified by it and assembled it incorrectly. (It will stay that way - it's close enough and I'm not a battle tested styrene surgeon.) I'm interested in using Tamiya cement as a prelude to putting on PE. On Model Warship their uber-meisters use small drops of "tacky" white glue to position railings etc - and follow it up with CA. I'll try your way next time out. I've never tried coloring the leading edge on wings etc to aid sanding - I have seen it done with an orange magic marker. Sounds like a very good idea. Or you can build Tamiya kits and not worry much about seams. (Wish they built bipes) Anyway, eager to see more.

Thanks Eric, been around the block a few times! The white glue technique to set PE is just as effective, the goal with any medium used is just to hold the part in place till you can get super glue flowing. :)

Hello all, got a new photo set up so no more messy work bench shots!

Anywho, pulling away from the wings for a little while I put effort into the front cowl. Previously I had added strip to the "package tray" assembly right under the shroud. This mod made the unit fit very tightly to the front of the cockpit.

As mentioned before the kit is a little chunky, here I am refining the strap detail on the wing warp A-frame. The trick is to carve a line right before the strap to set definition and then blend and sand until it looks right...and proud of the support.

And loose fit in place.

Bring back the bench!!!  ;D

I sometimes fit PE with UHU as it sets sort of rubbery. I'm fed up with pinging bits of PE off never to be seen again. I also recently fixed PE in place with ordinary styrene solvent, the softened plastic held well
