Title: Uploading Photos
Post by: Ian from Doncaster on April 20, 2012, 05:31:16 PM
Please can someone advise me how to upload photos here - my files are too big to add as attachments, even when cropped.

All advice gratefully received :)

Thanks guys for your comments on photo uploading.

There are three pretty good photo sharing sites;

Photobucket
Fliker
Picasa
or upload from your own URL

These are all free sites and offer good facilities. It is very easy to upload your photos onto those sites then it is a simple matter to place them onto this forum through the ''insert image" button. A good size to put your photos into these photo sharing site is 800, this being the largest dimension of your photo with the other dimension being in ratio. When photos are inserted onto this forum they will be loaded at 600x600, anything larger will be reduced to this size, anything smaller will not be affected. Photo size and attachments take up a lot of storage on a forum so I will have to keep a check on the usage in these early days.

Thanks guys,

Des.

As a viewer, I find the Photobucket type of image hosting to be a royal pain in the backside! Come back in a few months, or weeks even, and all the images have vanished. Which is useless if you are researching something some time after the original posting was made. A much better solution is to buy a little bit of web space, you get your own web address, a chunk of storage space on-line that you can upload your own photos and other files, link to them as, when and where you wish, use the space as back-up storage, quite apart from a bunch of e-mail addresses and other features. The advantage is the pictures are availalbe until you decide to remove them, not Photobucket.  Web packages are available from multiple sources for only a few dollars, and will usually come with file transfer porgrams and much more. I use www.1and1.co.uk, but there are thousands of others. No commercial links, just a happy customer. They host all my sites such as www.flyingstart.info and others.

Right, back to working on my WNW F2b!!

i have noticed that sometimes i will visit an old thread and there will be a box where the pic used to be saying the photo was removed. i always thought this was removed by the original poster from his/her own photobucket account to free up space or such. so you are saying photobucket removed the hotlink url locations from places for no apparent reason? confused?

I have had photos on my photobucket album for over three years and never lost a photo, maybe what Red has said is the reason for people losing photos.

Yes it happend when people reorganise their albums. If you don't reorganise, the photo will remain viewable

thats is what i always figured, or that someone had to delete old photos to make room for new ones.

I never had problem with Photobucket, but some times I remove some not important pictures to make room for new pictures.
In such case in tread were this picture was, is visible message that picture was removed or deleted.

Hello,

For those having trouble with the size of the pictures to attach or download. I use a freeware program named BDsizer : http://bd-sizer.en.softonic.com/. I always take the pictures in RAW format, edit it if neccessairy, save it in jpeg format and than pass it trhough the BDsizer. An example of the gain of space : raw format : 27Mb in raw, 10 Mb in jpeg and after the Bdsizer session : 280Kb. The quality is very decent. By the way I did not have any difficulties with photobucket up till now.

Kind regards
Patrick

I use imgur. You can set the size from a list of options before you upload. Just select the message board option and you've good to go...and it's free. :)

DES is posible to make the size a little bigger? Like for a single picture up to 178kb and for five  up to 400 kb.

Hi Martin,

When loading photos as an attachment they are very limited in size (kb's) hence the small size, these restrictions are put in place by my forum host, not me, and I can't change them.

To post larger photos you will need to store yur photos in a photo storage site like Photobucket or Picasa for example, these sites are free to use and allow you to store an enormous amount of photos. Once stored it is a simple matter to tranbsfer your photos from your storage site to the forum by using the photo URL, the photo will be posted on the forum at 600 x 600 but a simple click will enlarge it to what ever size the original photo is. Naturally, if you store your photos smaller than 600 x 600 they will only be posted on the forum at the size you saved them as.

Most photo sharing sites are very easy to use and have the option to store your photos privately or you can share them with the rest of the world, your choice. I use Picasa, it is a really easy site to use, I have never had an issue with the site and photos transfer instantly, our members use a variety of photo sharing sites so it is up to you which one you would prefer.

What happened to the good old days when you could upload images straight from your computer . All modelling sites seem to want you to join Face book, Twitter or one of the other photo imaging sites before letting you post pictures . I don't want to spend all my nights on the computer moving pictures around , that's my modelling time wasted . So I guess you will not be getting any Pictures of my work .

TRB is quite correct in what he has said, to upload photos as an attachment directly from you computer costs quite a lot to the forum and uses a lot of download, free photo hosting sites are just that, free and easy to use and allows for much larger images to be posted.

This forum does allow you to attach photos but you will be limited to 5 images per post with a total maximum of 192kb, max individual size is 128kb. The images are posted as very small and cannot be enlarged.

The above is all true, plus the dedicated (& free) photo hosting sites have tools you could never dream of for images hosted on a forum. Plus, if you like to share some of your images on multiple sites -- it is easy peasy, just copy the link and paste, the photo is already uploaded.

Thanks for the very quick replies , I can now see the reason why this is now the norm on modelling sites . I guess the best thing is to find an imaging hosting site that suits my needs so I can post pictures and get feed back that will help me improve my finishing on WW1 Aircraft .
Thanks again for the reasons .

Gordon ....

Please allow me to recommend "Photobucket", it has served me well, and reliably for many years now. And apart from the occasional "upgrade or improvement" ... "read" additions of bells and whistles to keep the kids happy? has remained user friendly and relatively (in respect of me being a technoprat) intuitive.

Polite request to other users of Photobucket - When I am enjoying posted images and click on the pic' to see in it greater detail I am grossly irritated to see the revolving wheel of doom while my leaky connection attempts to connect with "your" photobucket account. Perhaps I'm the only one irritated by this - and I am now quite proud of my ageing irascibility ... but I do tend to just kill the link and move on. I haven't I suspect enough life left to indulge that damn spinning wheel.
........... apologies for the outburst.
Title: Re: Uploading Photos
Post by: uncletony on January 12, 2014, 03:39:32 AM
@Andi -- i tend to agree but unfortunately Photobucket made this the default mode for sharing an image, you can change this in your PB account settings but I suspect for many people that's a level of savvy too high.

Right then .... firstly allow me to say there was no edge in my statement - if we'd been face to face you would of detected a half smile.
It is a little tiresome though, so - based on Bo's assumption that I might be a computer whizz in order to circumnavigate this problem ... And I most certainly am not by the way. I had a bit of a look see .................

And it turns out to be quite easy .......... when you navigate to your album - and then pic' ... you all know that if you hover you get a drop down menu, to whit you click on "get links" - easy so far. Now then the problem arises here - Number four down is marked "image codes" for forums and boards ... and to be quite honest most folk will happily gravitate towards the instruction provided and it works!! But, It also opens the whole Photobucket in another page thing - making people wait if they're on a slow connection - and a little awkward for those that "cherry pick" the images that they choose to enlarge - (like me).
If you want to get an image that just enlarges on the forum page till you click again to reduce it ... you have to choose the second option down "Direct" .... bring that into your message reply box, and just one extra move, you have to click on the little "Mona Lisa" on the tool bar above - this will give you two "img" legends just paste between them ............. as so ...........

TaDaa ............................. I'm not a whizz by any means I just happened to arrive here having used this direct method of posting on previous sites back when the internet was powered by steam.

Hope you all take this in the spirit in which it was intend - I would never ruffle feathers a purpose, not knowingly anyway.

Hi Bo
That level of savvy was too high for me but I aspire to rise above that. Could you please provide more details? I am keen to adopt this

If you use photobucket, and click on the 4th option, you can edit the code within your post.  If you delete all but the [img... filename ../img] section from the link code, then you get the photo in the message board, without opening another window for photobucket.

Precisely James.  The photobucket link used to work directly, then they changed it for some reason.  One day I looked at the code I had copied, and saw the file name was not only wrapped by the [img] but further repeated within [url]. I tried a few variants of the code until I worked out which seemed to work.  A bit of a pain to delete the [url] stuff for each pic, but does the job.

Yeah but there is an easier way, less prone to error (erasing too much, or not enough). Actually two ways.

Method #1 Fix your photobucket once and for all.
1) Log in via web browser (not mobile app, doesn't work).
2) Go to account settings (drop down menu found under your name in the upper left).
3) click "Albums" tab
4) uncheck "link back to albums" :

Now you can copy the image code with one click from any image in your bucket by clicking on the box marked 1 below:

Method #2 -- use the direct link instead of image code.
1) click on the box labeled 2 on the image above -- this is the actual URL of your image. It will be copied to your clipboard.
2) back at the forum, in the post message editor, click the insert image button (Mona Lisa).
3) Ctrl-V (Win) or Cmd-V (MacOS). The URL will be inserted between the BBCode image tags.

In my opinion the best photo hosting site is picasa, no hassles, one click loading, as easy as pie to use and to transfer photos to a forum, and it's fee.
I got sick and tired of the problems I used to have with photobucket, they totally ruined what used to be a good site, so for the past two years I have used picasa without any issues at all, but, it all boils down to personal choice.

It seems Picasa was a Google offshoot, and it is now superseded by Google Photos.

I have had no luck getting Google Photos to work for me.
I can copy the link to a photo and paste it in my browser to bring up the image, so the link works, but I use it to post here, nothing happens.

Has anyone had success with Google Photos?

Just for fun I'll try again with this post.  Image 1:

I have used Picasa, but this was replaced by Google Photos, as you wrote.

Picasa had the official feature of providing links for external embedding.
The good thing is, that none of the links was deleted, it is still supported, but now is no more possible to add pictures. Only download and delete is supported now.

Google Photos DO NOT support external linking. This is a official statement in the support forum, which made many users unhappy (and I think this was the real reason for Photo).
I had embedded for some time Google Photos also here (before I was aware of this issue), but it was tricky and not sure, how long this links are working. So I don't use it anymore.

Cheers,
Frank

I hope this is the right place to test a photo - I'm currently working on a WNW Felixstowe early and have been uploading pictures to Flickr...

So I thought I'd put a test image on here just in case... and to try to work out what format of link to use.
