Ah, here you are now. The answer to the question "what comes next" came faster than expected. I really like what you did with the engine. Did you already decide what color sheme you'll do?
Andreas
-
Not resting on your Laurels I see ;D Your engine looks Stunning in spite of any issues you had! Your usual awesome work and I am really looking forward to the rest of the build!

Great work on the engine Frank, I look forward to seeing the rest of the plane glued behind it!
:-)
Antonio

Great engine work.
I'll watch for the finish.

Wow!
Prop props for sure!
-
That's a beautiful prop Frank. I did one for the 1:32 Roden D.III several years ago and failed on the first try however I was able to succeed by doing two 2 blade props and then joining them, I think not as efficient as your method with four blades from the beginning of the construction. The grain and veneer on this one look great!
Being in the larger scale I was able to use 8 layers of veneer, it took a lot more time then the standard props I usually produce.
As always your work is exceptional, and I'll look forward to following your progress on this beauty, one of my three top favorite WW.I aircraft.
Cheers,
Lance

Brilliant work on the prop Frank! I am in AWE!

Magnificent work on this project!
There's a 4 blade Wotan prop at the Auckland War Memorial in NZ.

It features a Wotan logo on each blade:

Wow Frank, another beauty underway..... That four blade prop looks outstanding.
-
I realy love you wooden works skills! Bravo on the prop.
-
Very nice work there - the prop is brilliant!
Great choice in scheme - I did the same Dembrowsky machine in 1/32 and it looks very nice when complete
-
Brilliant engine and propeller, I'm looking forward to the Siemens build.
Ciao

Most excellent work. one of the prettiest wooden props I have seen.
Can you say more about the wood you used? What kind is it? What thickness? Where can such pieces be had?
I have an old Eduard SSW D.III kit I have been looking forward to doing something with. Built one years ago and it was a bear to get through. Louvers come to mind as something of a nightmare. A stunning wooden prop may well take eyes off other parts.

Thank you my friends for the great feedback!
Being in the larger scale I was able to use 8 layers of veneer, it took a lot more time then the standard props I usually produce.
Lance, you are so right! After zooming in the 8 layers are clearly visible in my picture of the original prop. And sand the layers down to 0,4 I have also already done for other propellers, I just started not carefully enough ::)
May be one day I will build also the red/blue/alu one, since there are two sets on the Aviattic page, so I can do it better next time!
It features a Wotan logo on each blade
Dave, thanks for the great pictures! The dark, red coloring is very interesting compared to the Wotan here in Munich. I will add decals after painting. Eduard provided some in the kit, but I have also others. I will take the better ones.
Most excellent work. one of the prettiest wooden props I have seen.
Thank you very much, nice to hear such compliment!
I think my others produced (also here shown) are even better, mostly to mention the Axial of my Pfalz D.IIIa, the three kinds of wood Fokker E.V and the most crazy one: my only 1/72 on the Fokker E.V Stripdown.
If I would start a commercial production, what would be a price, someone would pay for such quality? 25$ for 1/48, 30$ for 1/32? I guess, this is already to high, but still do not not pay back my handcraft effort :(
Can you say more about the wood you used? What kind is it? What thickness? Where can such pieces be had?
As I wrote on top of the veneer picture both are "pear wood", just different pieces. As wood is a nature product, every tree is different.
I have peer veneer of a little bit thicker as 0,5mm. You can buy it in the internet from 0,5..0,8mm my many specialized shops, just google for "veneer". The problem is more to get a small amount, often is is sold e.g. many blades of 2,60m length, so high shipping costs and much more then needed. Again, since it is a nature product, you have to see, whats offered. So I checked some shops from time to time for a offer of some smaller sizes and rests.
On ebay there are also offerings of e.g. 20 blades of different kind of veneers each A4 (or letter) size. Not all kinds are usable here, but nice for first experiments.
Not for all kinds I have veneer, here my dark pear was sold in two pieces to be used as knife handle. I cutted my own veneer from it on my little circular saw Proxxon KS230.
The thickness should be sanded down to the needed size, depending on the thickness of the complete propeller (often the kit propeller is helpful) and count the layers on a original picture. For the 1/72 airscrew I have sanded it to very very thin layers.
So, I hope I answered all questions. So I can start now to prepare the next update.
Cheers,
Frank

Lance, and I read such nice answers with pleasure (and try to learn the english language better from such nicely worded answers). But true master? I'm reddening :-[

Coming along very nicely Frank. The Lozenge has really complimented the black finish, it's a much more colorful scheme then I thought it would be. Very nice! 8) 8) 8)

This is looking wonderful. The interior details and the lozenge transfers aretaking this to a completely new level. Looking forward to seeing this completed.
Stephen.

So it is worth the effort it takes :)

PS: Manni this year we failed to meet in Wilnsdorf. Next try 2019? -> 28. April, I will be there ;)

She's absolutely stunning, Frank! Serious eye candy, that! I love it.

Hey Frank, where did you get your rigging spider (LOL). Looking great as usual.

Beautiful plane Frank, this black livery is my favourite in this kit (I have the same)...
Your prop is better than the original!!!
Antonio

lovely work Frank.
I really must try the propeller technique.
Guy

That propeller is out of this world, I have much to learn.

Thank you!
I hope I can do the pictures of the completed model next weekend.

Just catching up with all the excellent builds here, can't comment on them all at the same time as I'd be stuck behind my laptop all evening! After reading through it all I'm really impressed by the skill and craftmanship -very inspirational!
Thanks for taking the time to post such things in detail :)
Jeroen

Holy cow, that's awesome! The prop alone is stunning! I'm glad the spider wasn't harmed. Those little hunting spiders are cool.
-
This is extremely fine modelling Frank. I thought that this was 1/32 scale until I checked the header!
Stephen.
-
Simply amazing. I hope to see it in Erding this weekend?
Andreas
-
Andreas, it is planned to be there on Saturday, but just as visitor, not exhibitor.
May be I could have one model box with me ;)
Cheers,
Frank

We'll be there with three guys from Nuremberg, so great that we can meet there
(Didn't get the hint with the model box...)
See you on Saturday

I take one of my model boxes and will bring this Siemens-Schuckert biplane with me - particular for you :)
See you!

Awesome!

This is another beautiful build, and I like every bit of your modelling. The livery also is my favourite within the choices from the box.
Very well done.

Thank you Giuseppe!
I'm still waiting for decals, then there will be the final pictures in Completed Models section.

Frank, It is amazing to me just how detailed and beautiful your kits turn out. Terrific work in any scale but in 1/48th even better! The finish of the fuselage, lozenge, details added, and application of the Markings are outstanding. Of course the rigging is also top notch! Lovely build!

Thank you Rick and Ed!
And it was a good try to build a kit mostly oob, beside some accessories and the scratched air screw.
Yes, this is possible, so it is a good medicine against the AMS-"Advanced Modeling Syndrom" ;)
And now the final pictures:
