Post by: Edgar on July 25, 2018, 07:03:59 PM
Our sculptor, Andrey Bleskin is eager to receive the first 3d printed and built Nie17 project that should be released in plastic later this year (Autumn). 1/32 French figures should be ready for our Nieuport 17 release as well, stay tuned for more info

I am looking forward to this release as well.  A too often looked over aircraft that was significant in the allied effort for air superiority, this looks every bit a quality and well detailed kit.

Edgar, your Nieuport 17 looks magnificent and I'm sure it will be a big seller for Copper State Models. The detail we can see shows this will be a world class kit. Please post more images when you have them. This is a "must have" model!

like i've said before, i'm in for 6 at a minimum.

and figures? depends. can i recognize an ace or notable? (Nungesser? Bullard? i've not seen a good one of either). if so, i buy figures, but 1 per aircraft.

And on the other side, there's me, who's not interested to much in heroes. So I would rather like to see „generic“ french pilots, mechanics and the like. As far as I can see, most of the french pilot figures we have so far, look a bit „static“, posing for the photographer. So I'd be happy with some frenchies as vivid as your german etc. pilots and personell!

Hello Edgar,

I would very much like to know which markings you were going to use for the impending Nieuport kits, as I would like to produce some complimentary decal sheets for your new kit and I'd like to be sure that we did not cover the same schemes. I expect that the availability of alternative markings would help your sales, so we would both benefit.

I've tried to contact you by email but I've received no response from you. I recall that Des tried to also get in touch with you when the contributions to this website from Copper State ceased, but did not get a response either.  I'm sure that you would have no objection to cooperating with Pheon, so perhaps we both had the wrong email address?

Look forward to hearing from you soon, as it would be good to be able to release our decals to coincide closely with the launch of your kit - which looks super, by the way.

All the best

Rowan

Greetings guys,
I would like to add a bit more info about figures, we are doing not only aces, but mostly simple pilots and mechanics that you would be able to use with your CSM Nieuports

Hello Rowan
Glad to see(read) you in this topic, my email is still the same. But just in case it`s edgar.liepinsh (at) copperstatemodels.com, last email from you dated JAN 2016

A small update

We are planning to make several nations at the start
2 French kits - early and late with 4 markings for each, so it`s total of 8
1 Russian kit - 4 markings

And in partnership with Melius Manu, who does all our decal designs, we are preparing around 20 french markings and some Italian markings as well. Please note that each of the decal markings will be sold as a stand-alone set, so the modeller would be able to choose from the variety that we are going to offer
For the British markings, we are doing an additional kit, as some parts should be done in plastic to have an accurate model

And our sculptor is now making figures using the test built model so it all would perfectly fit.
And we really hope to bring it all to you guys this Fall

2 Rowan,
for any additional questions, please email us

With Kajetan(Melius Manu) we made a decision to offer custom Nieuport decals by MM, that would be rather cheap as main roundles and stencils will be already in the kit

CSM says "Nieuport XVII"?    ???   I think "Nieuport 17" is correct, the last Roman numeral Nieuport being the XIII. As an example of Nieuport numbering "confusion", note that the Nieuport XI is not the same aircraft as the Nieuport 11.

The Nieuport XI was a prototype single-seat sport monoplane similar to Nieuport II, but with constant chord wings. The Nieuport II was a single-seat sport/racing monoplane powered by a variety of engines.

WIKIPEDIA:
Nieuport I - retroactive designation for pod and boom tractor monoplane, destroyed during the 1910 Great Flood of Paris after one flight.
Nieuport II - single-seat sport/racing monoplane powered by a variety of engines.
Nieuport III - two-seat sport/racing monoplane with Anzani engine.
Nieuport IV - two-seat sport/racing monoplane.
Nieuport VI - three-seat sport monoplane used by French Navy and Royal Naval Air Service.
Nieuport VIII - two-seat sport monoplane, variant of VI for Turkey.
Nieuport X - three-seat monoplane similar to VI but with constant chord wings, used by French Navy.
Nieuport XI - prototype single-seat sport monoplane similar to II but with constant chord wings.
Nieuport XIII - prototype armoured monoplane similar to the X

The designation system of Nieuport’s aircraft is clearly explained in a book Nieuport Aircraft of World war One by Ray Sanger – page 6.

In brief:

Initially, airplanes were designated with Roman numbers supplemented sometimes with capital letters to indicate their purpose (for example M like Militaire) or the type of engine (for example Nieuport type IIN – it was Nieuport II fitted with Nieuport engine, Nieuport type IID – it was Nieuport II with Darracq engine)

First Nieuport biplanes were derivatives of monoplanes and they had been given designations after their predecessors, supplemented with letter B to indicate they were biplanes.

Roman numbers were replaced by Arabic numerals in 1917.

Contemporary designation of the plane we know as Nieuport 10 was Nieuport type XB because it was biplane derivative of Nieuport X. The same rule applies to the aircraft we know as Nieuport 11.

So, there were:

-   Nieuport X – a monoplane built in 1913,
-   Nieuport XB later renamed Nieuport 10 – a biplane built in 1914,
-   Nieuport XI – a monoplane built in 1913,
-   Nieuport XIB later renamed Nieuport 11 – a biplane developed during the Great War.

Anyway, during the great war, pilot and manufacturer spoke more about the engine power to call the different plane

(https://nsa39.casimages.com/img/2018/09/04/180904045359133937.png) (https://www.casimages.com/i/180904045359133937.png.html)

first it was

80hp for ni-11
110hp for ni-16

then when ni-17 appears with bigger wings , they speak about

13m²80hp   for ni-11
13m²110hp for ni-16
15m² 110hp for ni-17
15m² 80 hp for ni-21

Bernard Klaeley wich is the best french specialist about nieuport use the both way , ni-11 and ni-XI.

No, we are talking about the Nieuport 17. The Nieuport 11, Nieuport II, and Nieuport XI difference was already well explained by sandbagger. Here is a photo of the Nieuport II since you asked:

Pretty slick for its time, I think.  :)

Hey folks,
sandbaggers list might show the theory, but like so often things in practice didn't care about that: You find the designation "Nieuport X" in many contemporary reports and photo captions for a "Nieuport 10", "Nieuport XI" for "Nieuport 11" and "Nieuport XVII" for "Nieuport 17". It seems more like a habit, like some people are used to (or were used to respectively) write the month of a date in roman letterings like 15/XI/1916 instead of 15.11.1916. So if the Nieuport factory itself called their Nieuport 17 a Nieuport XVII, then we shouldn't think to kniw it better, don't you think? ;)

In your context, of course we shouldn't think we know "better".  I'll bet though, that you use "Nieuport 17", right?

To close my participation on the subject, my suggestion is only that CSM standardize their labeling, and in that regard, that "Nieuport 17" should be that standard.

Just recieved the CSM Nieuport XVII late kit and I must say it is great!

For all of you hoping it would be WnW quality, all I can say, it is not..... it ismuch, much better!! details are fantastic and that munual... oh my, that is not only a beauty, but very, very helpfull. It may not contain pictures like WnW does, but all the diagrams and tips make it so much more modeller friendly and just overflows with love for the model and hobby from cover to cover.
If you do not already have ordered one, do so, you will not be disappionted

many, many thanks Edgar and everybody else at CSM, hoping this wil be on sale for a long time as I will want to build more of this one for sure

I am still (patiently!) waiting for my Nieuport, but if that's true, what Hidde says (and I tend to believe him!), then I think CSM should be the one to produce the (by many of us, though not especially by me) long since hoped for new Fokker Dr.I Dreidecker in 1/32th scale!

It means that Italian army received Nieuports later on when SPADs were all over in French escadrilles, so most of the Nieuports had number 3xxx, that is why, logically, all Nieuports had Vickers MG as the main armament, that is why you need Late Nieuport with reinforced wing and not early engine cowling to use Italian decals)

I got a N17 late in the mail today

A brief first impression is that I'm really quite blown away. I thought I was getting the Early but the late turned up, my wife had ordered it and my indecision must have left her confused.

The instruction manual is a work of art itself. So much detail and extra information inside its cleverly designed cover. I thought WNW instruction books were something but this is above and beyond that.

The kit parts themselves look sharp with beautiful detail and some lovely touch's that won't be seen once assembled but wow the eye.  The interior looks absolutely fantastic. the attention to detail with rigging and colour call outs is fantastic and I think a breath taking model can be built OOB to be truthful.

Decals look sharp and in register, Cartograph so not expecting any issues but something CSM has done I love the idea of is the extra serial numbers in both sizes so any number can be made with little effort. I just think it’s one of those extra special little touches.

Now I’ve fondled it I have to be strong and finish some other builds before starting but I see no reason to buy or make anything extra apart from rigging and turnbuckles.
So my opinion is that I hope my skills can do this beautiful kit Justice it deserves. I knew from the images I’d seen of the sprues online it would be nice but this is something more.  Equal if not better than WnW to be frank and honest.  I just noticed how the upper wings joining slots have been slide moulded saving that ugly seam to get rid of in most multi-section wings. I bet there is more clever touch’s I’ve not seen yet.

I said brief but… I think at first glance it’s one of the best kits I’ve had my hands on. The work research and effort CSM clearly put into this project shows and the wait has been well worth it. Thank you CSM… Now what have you got up your sleeves next for us 1/32 builders?

My late version arrived today - the box a bit battered after flying halfway round the world.  As others say it looks beautifully crafted and detailed with a very cool manual. Many of the parts are increadibly fine - assembly will need extra care! Thanks CSM - it is a winner!

The challenge for me is going to be how to paint aluminium dope on the various surfaces - fabric, plywood and metal??? But it'll be a while before I get into it so maybe some one else here will lead that process and inform me (us) during it...

Cheers
Alistair

i pre-ordered also. one of each. looking forward to 'em but in no hurry.

i'll be needing at least 2 more of the Late, now that they're lining up decals for Fulco Ruffo di Calabria's ship and Francesco Baracca's (and they've already got a Baracca figure).

My CSM 1/32nd Nieuport 17, Early, arrived Friday, 23 November.  Looks to be a fantastic kit, nicely molded with crisply molded details.  I am looking forward to getting into it.  Thanks CSM.  Hope to see more.

I bought one of each (early and late). Indeed, it is a thing of beauty. Remarkably clean moulding and tiny little sprue gates.

Cheers

The Late version has just arrived today for review and an article will be posted soon. First impressions are that this kit is a real winner. CSM say they have also sent an Early version for a forum review and this will also be reviewed when it arrives.
