Title: The ANZACs and the AEG - Step 1 complete
Post by: Michael Scarborough on May 14, 2018, 11:49:17 PM
Greetings all. Some of you may remember me from my previous incarnation here on the WWI forums. Glad to be back.

The current project is a diorama based on the iconic photo of Aussie troops with AEG 588/17 in Amiens, France, in 1918. Flip Hendrickx sent me the photo and dared me to try turning it into a diorama, so this is all his fault.

The action report states that the plane was brought down by AA and landed, roughly, in flames, yet in the three photos of the plane to be found, none shows any fire damage. However, the starboard engine is missing so I wonder if it, specifically, was on fire and removed at the scene of the capture. Regardless, I have chosen to renew my artistic license and employ historic plausibility; I have retained the starboard engine, but shown it in tough shape.

Richard Alexander at Wingnut Wings was kind enough to dig up additional photos of the wing roots so that I could properly detail those. It was only after I was finished that I found out the visible sections would have been made of metal. I decided to leave them as they were.

As some of the Antipodeans living East of the Tasman Sea will note, there is a Silver Fern on the lorry. Even though the photo shows Aussies, in a tip of the hat to Inclusivity, I decided to make the lorry and its crew Kiwis. E haere mai koe.

I attended the MFCA Show in Philly last weekend and was honored by my colleagues with a gold for the AEG and a Bronze for the Thornycroft Lorry. As the latter was my first foray into something wingless, I was tickled.

So...now on to the figures and buildings.

Thanks for having a look.

Cheers from NYC,
Michael

Michael,
Beautiful work on the aircraft and well deserving of a "Gold" recognition. The detail on that starboard engine is what grabs my eye. As one who is presently in the throes of this model and particularly tied up at present with the final touches and installation of the engines I can really appreciate your efforts. Super work, and results to be very proud of. 8) 8) 8)
Cheers,
Lance

Great to have you back Michael. This is a truly magnificent project - and looking at the pieces that you have made so far it is going to be of exceptional quality when it is finished. I will be looking forward to seeing more of this.

Any chance of some photos of work in progress?

Stephen.

Michael,
Your skills as a modeler and artist are certainly evident in your work on the AEG and Lorry! Well deserved Gold. With so much added detail it is hard to narrow down but as others have said the engine in particular stands out!

Outstanding! The AEG is exactly my cup of tea. The more I stare to the pictures, the more new details I see. Simply amazing. One of the best works I have ever seen.

Stunning work, really deserving of a Gold award.

The title implies you will be adding some figures to it. What will you be using?

Sincere thanks to all for the wonderful comments. I'm a bit blown away.

Yes, Nigel....I'll be using figures from Tommy's War. They are superbly sculpted and, as they all come from the same maker, are all the same scale. I find that, even if marked as being in the same scale, figures from different makers can vary wildly, not so much in height, but in simple body mass. There will be a lot of converting and changing of poses, but I hope it will be worth in in the long run.

Edo, no build log here, although I did run one on LSP.

Thanks again, gents! It's great to feel so welcomed back!

Cheers from NYC,
Michael

Great to see you back, Michael!

As I have mentioned on FB already, this definitely is the best AEG I have ever seen.

Chapeau, sir!

Lovely work, Michael.
Just a note regarding figures.
Tommy's War are sculpted 54mm "to the eyes" - an old-school idea that renders them too large to be "1/32" scale but nearer 1/30th. Mixed with other figures this doesn't matter as people are all shapes and sizes - as has been discussed already.

best wishes, Richard

Looking forward to seeing that! I'm sure it will be worth it in the long run, although it won't be cheap in the short run....  ;)
