Title: Another Wingnut kit sells out
Post by: Dave W on May 02, 2018, 10:51:05 AM
The Wingnuts Junkers J.1, officially the very first Wingnuts model kit, has sold out at Wingnuts today. Released in April 2009 as kit #32001, now stand by for collector prices to prevail!

It seems Weta still has the Junkers listed for sale though.

Now only the Bristol F.2B kit remains available from Wingnuts' store from the initial releases of 2009.

The first kit I bought, thinking "I don't know who these guys are, but if they go under, I'll have an unusual WWI plane." 1 built, 2 in stash.

got mine in February. discounted, probably Lots of Models. I'll see it for the first time in about 2 weeks when I visit my Stash Keeper (TM) in the US.

I never had any intention of buying this one, but in 2012 at the Over the Front Convention in Monterey, I took second place in the modeling contest for my Sopwith Dolphin and this was my prize.  Ed Boll took first for his scratch built 1/28 Sopwith Triplane, so I don't feel so bad taking second.  Still have it in my stash.
Cheers,
Bud

Not a huge fan of the aircraft, though I did kind of grow on me. With a rather limited modelling budget, there were (and are) too much other kits, so I'm not hurrying off to Weta to get one :)

Same here. Never on my wish list. I hope all who want one are able to pick up the kit.

Not too worried about it either.
WNW's apparent policy of offering oop kits at later dates signifies to me that punters and speculators have little chance of pulling my pants down , tripling the price of model kits , and expecting me to buy one. So if I want one of those all I have to do is be patient , which is the cornerstone of good modelling anyway.
If thats the case , GOOD SHOW WNW!

I agree completely! Saw a comment on FB where someone asked if anyone had a spare Albatros...Coming this year with a figure for what is sure to be far less than the scalping pries  ;D

Sure and with decal manufacturers keeping pace lots of subjects will be available as well.
And as a buyer and seller of kits I still applaud the previously lauded sales and production philosophy of WNW. I was recently burned severely by a re-seller of WNW kits , all of which were in a bad state and offered on the fanclub Fbook page. I took them as being as presented and it turned out not to be the case , very disappointing and disconcerting.

wow krow113 REALLY sorry to hear that...

not had any similar experiences.

i've had EXTREMELY good luck with various random people on the internet selling me old kits. Scalemates in particular has been good to me. The buy/sell/trade section here has treated me like family.

and some dude in Canada i sold a Millennium Falcon to found out i was obsessed with WWI aviation in general and WNW in particular and sold me a Biff on the cheap. And Biffs are among my favs.

only bad experience was on ebay. sold out kits for ridiculously low prices, based in China. no kit arrived. SURPRISE! ebay gave me my money back.

Yes it was the worst of a few debacles.
All of them having the same thing in common, trusting someone who has no morals or scruples and is comfortable hiding behind other peeps morals and scruples to enable the rip-offs.
That and the weird unspoken rule that you cant say anything bad on the internet!
Lest ye become a target!

I am astounded that the "Biff" has lasted this long. Des labelled it the "best" of all of their releases, and I agree. I hope to do a second one day, the Kit is outstanding and it's potential is limitless. The Kit engineering is flawless IMHO!
Cheers,
Lance

as of the end of January or so when your cart could preview WNW's inventory, there were 12 J.1, and 114 Biffs.

There were also 4 Pfalz D.IIIa, 32 Hissos, 33 E.II/E.III Early, 41 Snipe (early), 11 Albatrilogy. Seeing how many of those are now sold out, I think the preview was pretty accurate.

from watching that cart while it was available i saw some of what i'd expect: certain kits were produced in huge quantities and others quite small, and certain types (single seaters with relatively simple rigging) sell faster.

I'd guess they made a lot of Biffs, and to some it looks complicated.

There were less than 100 early Fees, but I suspect that they sell slowly because it looks so complicated. Hope I'm right I need another one for the FE2d conversion. Already got the engine.

Oh and based on the preview, if you're looking for an Albatros B.II or AMC DH.9, you can take your time. over 1,000 of each. and when the Biff sells out, there are over 1,000 post war Biffs.

The numbers i got from this preview have guided my purchases, and I got a J.1, a Pfalsie just in time, an EII/EIII early just in time, a Snipe (still not sold out) 2 Albatrilogies (from Weta actually but the low number made me do it)... So it's worked well for me so far.

FWIW shameless hoarder that I am, these have been bought with full intent to build. I have another spreadsheet specifying how many of each type i need to build all the ships i want to build. That said, I have no problem with speculators, as long as they understand it's mere gambling and not 'investment.'

The numbers may not be 100 percent reliable as a snapshot (only 294 Dolphins, but it was only just released so I suspect they were still being manufactured, bought one anyway from the Lots-of-Models sale.

if there's any particular aircraft you want to know about or if you want to see the original sheet, ping me (or post if you think other people will want to know).

I personally like the J. I and I am happy having one in my stash. The Möbelagen was an importand Great War aircraft and it would be great to see the other ground attack planes (Albatros J. I/II, AEG J. I, Halberstadt Cl. II/IV).

My very first WNW kit, and a real thrill to see the quality displayed in the J.1. I built it as the 1918 appearance of the only surviving J.1 in the world, and now resident in Ottawa, Canada. Great fun!  8)

Quite a few WNW kits have sold in recent months.

I think the J.1 is officially my least favorite WNW kit made to date.

They have, in a roundabout way. Eindekker, Albie, tripe, and the DH-2. 2nd time 'round for the DH2. LVG available, as well.

The Albatros is going on it's 5th  release, more or less. DV,DVa,the originals, DVa (OAW), Triple kit, and Now MvR DV. WNW have not left the Molds Idle for Long  ::) The Fokker DVII was available in 4 original releases and is now re released as an Early Fokker built bird. They also are selling all of the engine cover sprues enabling building any of the 4 original releases. The W29 was reissued only in an expensive Duelist kit but technically still reissued. As mentioned above the Sopwith Tripe, DH2, and Eindecker are all slated for re issue. I am pretty sure I may have missed a sold out kit that is or has been made available at some point.

Me too. That's the only one I really regret not getting.
