First off, I want this build to be a tribute to Des, the founder of this forum. His scratchbuilds motivated and encouraged me to build WW1 aircraft. Unfortunately, he passed away before this was completed.
This is the first complete model I have scratchbuilt and it has been quite an experience, using many techniques new to me. It has been very enjoyable and I would encourage others to try scratchbuilding. The only commercially produced parts I used is a resin cast engine and instrument face decals. All other parts are made from elemental components: sheets, tubing, and rods, made of plastic and metal. I also made the decals using a laserjet printer.
The model depicts a Fokker V.23 prototype that took part in the second fighter trials in 1918. The V.23 did not progress pass the trials and was not produced. I chose to build this model as the original looked very interesting (nicer than the Junkers D.1). There is not much documentation on this plane, so I 'filled in' details based on the Fokker D.VII, which was produced at about the same time. The similarities are obvious.

Ken,
A super scratchbuild and no mistake.
Well done!

I think Des would love it. It's unusual, it's nicely built, it's a scratchbuild, it is - of course - a piece of WW1 modelling, but most of all you did something new to you. Des was always very encouraging to folk trying things out
She's a lovely aeroplane and a credit to you, absolutely beautiful.

That's one impressive model Ken, you've done a superb job. For a first attempt at Scratch Built modelling it's doubly impressive, and yes, Des would be thrilled with it, well done!
Cheers,
Lance

Splendid workmanship.
That prop is a crowning touch.
-
Outstanding scratch-building. Enjoyed following your log and can only say that your skills are demonstrated by the final product.
-
Ken,
Outstanding scratchbuilding my friend. Beautiful work from beginning to end.

Thanks for the compliments. With you guys looking over my shoulder, I knew I wouldn't go wrong. I hope I contributed something each of you can use in your future builds.
On to something else now - an ICM Bucker Bu131 or a Revell FW190 F8. Tough decision.
-
Outstanding work, Ken. A very eye-catching build. I watched your progress with high interest. Most I like the self made brezels.
Bye,

That is a super first scratch build. The propellor is very good but the cockpit details are also very noteworthy. Your build thread was a joy to folow.
Stephen.

Thanks, Manni. The bezels do give the IP some pop.
Thanks, Shephen. I am pleased with how the propeller came out for the first one. For the future I see some subtle ways to improve it.

Very sharp!!

Ken,
I just about jumped up and tried to do a back flip when I saw this one done.
That is one fine model and indeed, a fabulous tribute to Des. Thanks for sharing
this with all of us.

Spectacular!

That is really a fantastic scratch build of a Fokker type, which I never have seen as model.
Very carefully build and painted.
Only a very mild criticism: I think the rubber of the tires was not black, more grey, but may be I'm wrong.
Cheers,
Frank
-
The tires probably were gray, but I used O rings for the tires and was hesitant to paint them.
Thanks for posting.

Coward! Just because mine split...

The closer you are to completion, the more discretion is the better part of valor. ;)

Very nice work, fantastic scratchbuild. And a fitting tribute to Des, very well done.

Passing along this tip from a model military vehicle website. Rubber tires must be first thoroughly washed with cleanser to remove all traces of mold release and skin oils. Then apply a 50/50 mix of white glue and water as a base coat. Allow to completely dry. Acrylic paint is recommended for final finish.

I am proud to announce that my Fokker won best of show at a local contest!
There were numerous well made models in contention - ships, armour, and figures, but I believe the fact that mine was scratchbuilt tipped the scales in my favor.

I would encourage others to try scratchbuilding. Start small by adding small details to kit models and go from there. Adding details you make yourself makes the model uniquely yours and not just an assembly of parts some one else made.

Wicked!
The best validation.

Very well done, Ken. I think I might have mentioned you are good at scratchbuilding....
A well deserved accolade
