Title: New stuff coming from Aviattic
Post by: wmoran on April 09, 2018, 09:16:38 AM
I see that Aviattic has been busy lately.  They have announced a MvR figure and cookie-cutter decals for the WNW Dolphin (CDL (2 shades), PC10 (2 shades), and PC12) and lozenge for the Pfalz D.XII.  Here is a link to the announcements:  https://www.aviattic.co.uk/new.html.

I have a Pfalz D.XII awaiting paint and decals, so I will probably order that set, and I will have to try out the CDL and PC10 decals on one of the two Dolphin kits I have.

Thanks for sharing. I have added the MvR figure to my Cart. Just need SWMBO permission before pulling the trigger  :(

Seems you are not alone! I have never had a quieter three months since starting Aviattic...the less than enthusiastic response to this thread speaks volumes.

Best wishes, Richard

Hi Richard, not everybody respond to posts, but hopefully our wallets will let you know how enthusiastic we are about your products.  All the best in your future releases.

Your products are simply superb - the best of their type available anywhere, easily superior to WNW's kit offerings.

However, Aviattic has a huge range of decals. Cookie cut, varnished, weathered, linen, PC10, etc, etc. The WWI aeroplane modelling market is a niche and may not be big enough to support such a big range, especially with WNW kits - your target kits to a large degree - now being fairly expensive? I'd love to buy Aviattic decals for all my kits, but I can't afford to buy all I need in one go, so I'll buy them as I start each of the kits. I build a WNW roughly once every 3-4 months, so my purchase rate will not be very quick, and I may choose finishes that don't need lozenge, etc.

I don’t build any 1:32 plane that has CDL surfaces without using your linen decals. I really enjoyed building your motorcycle and there’s the Marienfelde truck, the RFC trailer and ... and... and... still waiting on my shelf. At the moment I am still busy with 1916/ early 1917 aircraft, that’s my main interest. But there are many late 1917/1918 planes waiting to be build and I will use your Tarnstoff decals for all of them. I am happy every time when I hear of any new release from Aviattic. If I should build an all red Fokker triplane one day (I never said I wouldn’t), I’d place your Richthofen figure next to it.

I am delighted that Richard and Aviattic are back on the forum and am impressed with their detailed range of products and exciting new items.

The Von Richthofen figure is a very welcome addition to the market and deserves to sell well.

I just ordered 4 colour upper and lower decals and DVII photo eh.   I’ll be using Aviatik decals for the first time.

I never knew about the clear doped linen  decals. Lol so much has changed since I last built wwi in the early 2000’s.  Can someone explain what the benefit is. Is it the weave?
I’m curious and I do have a model I could use them on on my bench.

I also saw the Ballilia 😄

Combination of the colour & the very subtle weave pattern. It just LOOKS like linen, without being overdone. Once you've done one model using the CDL decals, you'll want to keep using them, as they add enormously to the finished model's look.

Really quite superb.

Richard, I just ordered a Dolphin cookie cutter set, uppers and lowers.  I think you know how much I love your linen decals.  I've used them on so many of my models.  Not on the Ninak, though.  Couldn't afford so many sheets.  God, that thing is big!
Cheers,
Bud

Has anyone ever tried the linen decals on 1/48? I'm worried they might look too overscale.

In my opinion, Mark, they do not look over scale, but judge for yourself.

if it's any help, i'm sure there're people like me out there quietly buying your stuff. so far most of it i've bought from US distributors because it's resin that you're sold out of (eindecker cowls!). i really really am delighted with your Frank Luke collaboration with Pheon, enough so that Rowan and Sabine are sending me your Voss collaboration.

I'm a bit behind the curve buying kits that will sell out from WNW and others, but once I catch up all the Germans will get lozenged by you, and I'll give your linen a go and see if i like it. your lozenges are spot on though.

i like what you're doing with the Richthofen figure, but i'm in that small minority not planning a lot of Richthofen projects.

if you prefer i will order directly where possible, as i hope you'll get more cash that way.

After asking about the CDL decals, my order of lozenge and PE for the 1/48 DVII arrived today. I am more than impressed and also terrified. I mean I can hear that voice in my head saying oh sh#$%&t I hope I don’t screw these up.
The colours look much better than the Eduard supplied decals and the weave is neat, not over done or out of scale.
Thanks Richard;)

Thanks for posting the real and model view Justin. I can understand now... I think I’ll be ordering. Wife is going to wonder why I get so many parcels lol.

Hi Ray,
I think you'll find the Aviattic decals really make a difference to the finish of a model.
The things to remember with these decals is they are not like standard decals and care is needed to ensure the surface is prepared correctly before applying them.
The decals themselves come as either 'cookie cut' for the relevant aircraft or as full sheets.  With full sheets the decal shapes will need to be cut from the sheet to fit the particular model surface. This might seem a daunting task, but create templates from paper first and once you are happy with the fit, use these to cut out the decal from the sheet.
Before you apply the decal you'll need to apply a base colour to the model. This colour depends on the finish you require, so test on a piece of plastic card fist, especially if you are going to pre-shade the surface as well. Normally the colour will be light, such as white or cream.
Once dry make sure the painted surface is really smooth and free from imperfections, such as trapped dust, scratches etc.  If necessary polish the surface with a polish compound, or sand with a very fine grade paper or sanding stick.  Finally clean the surface thoroughly.
The decal material is surprisingly strong and will stretch slightly if required.  Don't leave the decal soaking for very long or you may 'wash' off the backing too much.
Apply the decal in the normal manner but make sure all air is removed from under the decal. Unlike normal decals, setting solutions such as Micro-Set and Micro-Sol don't seem able to penetrate through the decal material, so are ineffective for bedding down the decals.  Consequently any air trapped under the decals, once dry, will cause silvering, which is difficult to eradicate.

If you are unsure, practice first - they need a different approach to normal decals, but are worth it, as the finished effect they create is very realistic.

I build in 1:32 scale and my last two models have Aviattic decals (Fokker E.V and the Sopwith Pup) and both required cutting from decal sheets. Both have build logs in PDF format on my model site - you can download or refer to them if needed.

Morning all, like many here I love the Aviattic product, but we do live on a budget so it's a case of buy some, save up , buy more, repeat. With the number ( and SIZE!) of WNW kits in the stash and each needing multiple sheets of decals and other A/M stuff such as Taurus and Gaspatch, I find that I alternate the buying sessions between sources. one order for Aviattic, the next for Taurus, etc. I go through the stash and list what each kit needs and make up a shopping list for each supplier and place an order. Unfortunately each list usually is more than the current budget allows, so parts get ordered in batches. Luckily for Richard, his list is up next! lol.  Regards Pete in RI

Yes, despite the obvious quality of 'Aviattics' figures, resin parts, vehicles etc, I think it's their decals, especially the linen effect decals, that has cemented their reputation in the modelling world.
