Title: WNW FE.2b Late
Post by: Mutter1 on April 02, 2018, 05:27:31 AM
Hello all,

Has anyone taken on the FE.2b late kit at all?

Mutter1,
I did one a while back, it's a fine Kit and it'll keep you real busy for a good long while. Here's a link to the completed model and there's an associated Build Log here as well. I think my old Photo Bucket Account expires tomorrow or even today but the photos are still there now.

Hello all,

I have a question. I have seen a picture of a painted and weathered DH.2 upper wing with the roundel on the underside faded in to look like it is showing through the fabric of the lower surface.... can this be applied to all RFC aircraft?

     thank you in advance!

I think that depends on how the wings were doped/painted. Clear doped wings had a shine- through effect, so you could see the roundel as a dark shadow when looking upwards at the lower side of the upper wing.
But when the upper sides of the wing were painted PC-10/12, this effect is hardly visible:
There are theories that say early DH 2s were painted in an early form of protective cellulose, called PC-8. It is possible that this paint was so thinnly applied that the thicker paint of the roundels produced a visible shadow anyway.

Afternoon everyone!

Question....I have been thinking of wrapping some of the finer EZ Line around the tail booms to represent the linen cord instead of th kit supplied decals. I was just wondering what you all think of this. It will give the spots a little more 3D appearance instead of the @d decal.

Thank you for your opinions in advance!

Afternoon all,

Sorry for the absence. Life has been pretty busy as of late. Having said that..I have managed to get some work done on the FE.2b. I have the “woodwork” paint finished on the cockpit. Also got the tail boom painted as well. I’ll post pics of the boom later maybe after i get the rigging and final assembly finished before I mate it to the wings and cockpit/wing section.

Evening Gents!

A bit of a question. As I am building this Fee I'm planning on finishing it as 7018 "Punjab 32 Montgomery".  I also have the Encore Models Albatros D.II...the kit has markings for 2 of Von Richthofen's aircraft. My question is...was the D.II painted with the light overcoat of red when he shot down Punjab 32?

                    Thank you in advance!
Title: Re: WNW FE.2b Late
Post by: lcarroll on June 20, 2018, 12:17:49 PM
I would say no, this was his first kill and he was, like the others of Boelke's pupils, a brand new guy on the unit...... not likely he'd be painting up his aircraft in his own garish scheme. The Air Power Ace Profiles #3 illustrates his aircraft as either D.II 481/16 or 491/16 at the time he shot down  Morris and Rees in your "Fee", and both aircraft are illustrated as natural ply and the period's 3 color wing camoflage. would guess that the most personal marks on the aircraft was the stripe behind the spinner, but that probably came later in 1916.
Cheers,
Lance

For What it is worth I agree with Lance. I wonder where the Red Painted DII  came from? I remember reading that MvR and I guess some other Jasta 2 pilots used the red/brown camo color on the fuselage. IIRC MvR doesn't Mention a RED scheme in his book until after taking command of Jasta 11. But who am I to say. Not a real Historian or researcher!

I realised I've looked at your log but never commented. Your FE.2b is looking superb. The add of the EZ line for the straps is very clever. I'm not sure I have the courage for this plane because the rigging looks terrifying!

Just read a novel with the FE as the flown plane. Not brilliant but good enough, page turning and makes you wonder how the terrible attrition rates for pilots, observers and the planes could be sustained. Of course human lives were just fodder in all respects - in the air and in the trenches. A very different world.

Nice work so far.  Your attention to detail on the aileron control horn rigging is noteworthy as it enhances and draws attention to that area of the model.  That's a lot of eye competition with the tail boom.  A real Charlette's web but looks great.  I have this kit and have for years.  Saw one finished at the IPMS US NATS in Phoenix and was wowed by it.  As Richard Alexander called it:  "A real Jewel."  Yours is going to be a real gem.  Looking forward to seeing your progress through the build.
