About 8 years ago, my lovely bride, Carol, bought my first WNW kit. I requested the Ninak for Christmas since I thought it looked cool and no one produced one in 1/48 scale. And then it languished. Since then, I built a WNW Triplane, a Pup and a W.12. This past Christmas was the first Christmas in 8 years that the WNW fairy passed me by so I took it as a hint, pulled the Ninak out of the stash and got started.
The first thing I noticed was how the top of the box bulged with parts. There are more parts in the cockpit of this beast than in my last two models in their entirety. And the wing span is massive.

The only modification I've had to make so far is the positioning of the control columns. The sticks and linkage are arranged in such a way that stick would be in the pilot's lap which would put the elevators in a climbing attitude. Most photos I've seen of the Ninak show the elevators slightly drooped for which the stick would have to be forward. So I cut a little off the linkage and tilted everything forward. That was it.

I used Uschi leather decals with a black water color wash for all the leather components.

Tolerances are very tight so all paint had to be scraped off mating surfaces.

Because I'm building this with the cowlings in place, I didn't add any detail to the engine. Just assembled and painted. Then it disappears.

Light grey as a base for preshading, then battleship grey.

This is where she stands now. Desert sand base coat on wings and tail surfaces.

Now for the epic masking of the ribs for preshading. Did I mention this wing is big? Only half of it is in daylight, the other half is in another time zone.
Cheers,
Bud

Bud,
Your off to an excellent beginning my old friend. I'll be looking forward to seeing more.

I have one of these in my stash so you have my full and undivided attention 8)
Great start and looking forward to more....

Very nice!! That is a big wing!!! I want to do mine as an USMC machine; which one are you doing?
-
Great start Bud, too funny about the wing. Looking forward to your progress.
-
Wow! That is quite far advanced! Lovely modelling too, and lots just disappears as you say! But a wonderful, complex creation! Marc.

I built the 1/72 Airfix/blue rider DH9 conversion many years ago. You don’t notice the size in 1/72.. when I bought the WNW Dh9 I thought I’d got the wrong contents in the box, the model is that large, wings especially...
Great progress btw.

Outstanding as always Amigo! The interior detailing and painting are top notch! Looks great with the fuselage together and with the primer!

Nice work so far. The wings are large-ish, but when it is time to glue it up, it sits just so on the box and dries nicely. I let mine sit for two days or so.
-
Great start, and promising. Waiting for next progress.
Ciao

A fine start, Bud ;)
Keep up the good work.

Thanks so much, guys! Got a bit more done. Pre-shaded the fabric portion of the fuselage.

Then painted the PC10, Humbrol 155.

First decals applied. No changing my mind about the scheme, now.

Outstanding update my old friend. Beautiful pre shading on her fabric. I really like your choice of markings too.

Great work, Bud.
The preshading looks really cool. It brings a lot of depth into the fuselage.

Hi Bud:
Glad to see you tackling the old "NINAK" one of my favorites. I like the preshading affect as seen through the PC-10 and the shadow roundel, nicely done. The interior colors are nice as well. I did this one when it first came out, and want to do another one at some point in time. I will be following along as you go through the assembly sequence and pick up some pointers. No need to detail the motor as long as you are going to button it up the way you did, good choice. Also, excellent choice of markings. ;)
-
Wow! That looks great, Bud! I love your shading effects and colour choices... Regards, Marc.
-
Love that paint work. Lessons to be learnt by me in the future - sweet.
Thanks,
Alistair
-
Yeah, that looks great...
-
That looks awesome!!
-
Only juist seen tis Bud - apologies but I have not had much time to look in regularly recently. This is superb work - the interior is every bit as good as we have come to expect from you and the external painting shows that this is going to be another of your outstanding builds.
Stephen.

Thank you so much, my friends! Your kind comments are greatly appreciated. Sorry neglected this thread for so long, but I was busy doodling away on that little Dornier. I did manage to make some progress on this one, though, so here it is.
Got the wings done(ish). They're not glued in place yet. Still need to add the rigging anchors and do a little detail painting.

That tail is exceptionally sharp work.
-
exceptional!
-
Great! Tail and the overall look of the wings: Love the colour and the linen-effect! Did you use decals for that or did you „simply“ paint them? If so: Which colour did you use?
-
Super work, Bud :)
A pleasure to behold.

Fantastic update! I love the shade of the PC-10! And the markings give her that very special "wow"!

Just paint, Richard. Humbrol 155 for the PC10 and Hunbrol 121 for the CDL, following the WNW call-outs.
Cheers,
Bud

Looking really nice!! Nice to see you in AEF markings especially USMC!!!

Great work, Bud. The preshadeing of the wings looks great. Top work1

One of my favorite planes. Thanks for sharing your skills. Semper Fi!!!

Beautiful. Go for it, Bud, make it complete without further delay.

Thank you, guys!
Top wing is finally on. Rigging to commence immediately.

Bud,
Looks great! Glad to see the upper wing on. You're on the home stretch.
Gaz
-
Thanks, Gaz! With the top wing in place, I can really see how big this thing is. I'm used to 1/48 scale, so this is the largest model I've built to date. Requires special handling. A 1/48 scale Vickers Vimy is smaller!

The light is at the end of the tunnel, Bud.
Happy Riggin'

Thanks, Bob! The short runs in the center section are driving me nuts, but it's a lot roomier than 1/48!
Cheers,

Looks great Bud! I've built one of these and you are right they are big, I've noticed people I show it to really like to view the rigging.

Beautiful updates, the preshading gave a very realistic look at the painted surfaces. And a gorgeous livery.

Awesome shading Bud!

Thank you, Mark, Giusppe and Guy! I'm more than half way finished with the rigging, but my work schedule has slowed progress. I'll post photos once the rigging's done.

Thanks, Amigo! Not sure yet if I'm even going. Better make up my mind soon, I reckon.
Well, she's done. Six months later. But, in my defense, in that time I also completed the Lanchester armored car, the S.V.A.9 and the Dornier D.I. For me, 4 models in 6 months ain't bad.
