Title: Marek/Matt77 Aviatik Berg D.I in 1/33rd Scale
Post by: NinetythirdLiberator on January 14, 2018, 04:25:30 PM
As the Dolphin is drying, I couldn't resist making another paper card model. Here is the "kit"!

I then glued some of the former parts and structural members to some 1/32nd sheet balsa and started cutting some things out.  I did the fin/rudder and began the main bulkheads along with the start of the engine.  This one is particularly well rendered.  It's called a "re-paint" of the original Marek design by a modeller going by Matt77.

I just couldn't resist.  We'll see how well this one goes together.  Thanks for looking!

Thanks, Rick.  You need to try one of these guys...you'd do them justice.

Anyway, here is part of the building sequence for the basic engine.  I will be adding some more details to it soon, but here is the state of affairs...

I discovered that you can get cleaner paper folds and make the cylinders easier if you add a tad of water (hence the brush to apply it sparingly) to the paper and then form it.  I'll keep experimenting, though!

I'm going to add the manifolds out of paper soon...they look a little tough to do since their diameter is pretty small for me, anyway.
We'll see how it goes tomorrow.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks, Everybody!  This has been a fun build...but I also realize that parts of the engine and interior are sort of fictitious or at least based on a different machine!  The engine, for example, has a completely different top manifold based on the shots I've seen and the magnetos are in the front!  Anyway, until I figure out some of that detail, I decided to work on the interior/fuselage.

The directions are pretty scarce and so most of this is pretty much based on my own intuition.  Here I also think that some of the interior pieces like the control wheel come from either a very early Berg D.1 or even (maybe) a picture of a Hansa Brandenburg Star-Strutter!  In any event, I wanted to use as much of the kit as possible so here is my attempt.

Some interior parts with the walls already folded and glued to the balsa bulkheads.  I thought the seat parts made sense, but in the end, I cobbled something together that looks ok but I don't think I'm using the parts correctly or as intended!

Here are the parts for the main controls.  Cutting them out was not easy task!

And here's what I got...I only added some paper seat belts.

Folded up...note the circular openings for light!  Cool.

Now with the engine bulkheads attached to make a basic forward fuselage...

And here it is sort of test installed.  With some more engine detail, it will look cool.  Can't wait to see if the rest fits!

Cheers and thanks for looking....Dan

Edit!! I just found some photos that DO show a control wheel!  They were apparently in earlier machines...live and learn!  I bet they had different engines too so I may be all wet!

A bit more on this cool model!

I tried to figure out what kind of engine really worked in this guy...it seems it was an Austro-Daimler 150 HP engine.  Not well represented by the kit parts at all.  The more I looked at it, the more I realized I should've just scratched the entire engine!  But, I decided to just add a few things to busy it up and make it look better.  Still looks pretty nice in the end.

First, I made some valve springs...

I also added some spark plugs, wires that just terminate at the front of the engine (no mags as this would involve a new engine entirely since they are at the front of the engine) and I used some wire for the manifold.  The paper was hard to use and make it look nice.  I did, however, use the paper to make my exhausts!  I also cobbled together somethings resembling rocker arms.  Again, these are not correct for the intended engine, but increase the intricacy of the kit parts so I'm pretty happy.

Then I added the cockpit and edging along with the side/nose skins.  Starting to look pretty neat!

I'll begin working on the underside and turtle deck tonight.  Thanks for looking,
Dan

It never ceases to amaze me what can be made from paper and in your very capable hands you make it look so easy, you have done a superb job so far, the engine and cockpit look excellent.

Thank you one and all.  Coming from this group, this truly means a lot.   :)

I added the top planking, the underside, the turtle deck and the fin/rudder along with the main wing spar. It needs a bit of touch up, but all appears well.  Coming along very nicely, I must say...

After I put the bottom on with its tabs, I realized they blocked the wing attachment...but it worked out just fine by simply bending the tabs up.  In fact, the extra friction made the fit better!  The spars are, by the way, 1/32nd sheet.

I forgot to mention that I also made sure to open up the control cable holes and glue some inside before closing everything.

More soon.  Although the Dolphin is calling!

Thanks, Des!

I got lots done today...finished the tails, tail struts and control cables to them.

Then I worked on the cowling.  I'm not sure what that extra piece added to the model.  Since I was a bit confused, I just left it off.  The front looks fine...especially with the radiator bits on the top!

Then I played with the landing gear which are just paper covering folded around wire structure.  The wire patterns seemed unnecessarily difficult so I just made simple V's that had extended ends that fit into holes in the lower forward fuselage (along with a spreader bar).  Seems to work for me!  The cabane skeleton looks too busy for me too so I've just left them off as my cabanes will just be double layers of paper.  This will be more than strong enough based on the other paper models I've built.  Plus...the interplane struts are sturdy wire so the cabanes will just be keeping things lined up!

I then made the interplanes and put on the top wing.  No theatrics at all.  The cabanes will go in later.

And here it is as of tonight...

I may be able to finish most of it tomorrow.  We'll see.

Cheers and thanks for looking!

My Oh my Dan, that is truly impressive! The latter photos make it appear to be a Wingnut Wings version in plastic, paper models are in no way the "poor cousin" of the Modelling genre so many regard them as for sure. Seeing some work by a fellow Model Club Member here and your work have made me a fan, I think I may try one on for size during one of my "something completely different" excursions! 8) 8) 8)

Hi Lance...

With your skills, these would be different, but turn out great.  Kind of a mash of balsa flying models (to me) and plastic.  Really the only thing I don't like is also what happens to make this particular model so cool...the renderings.  Meaning that all the models will look the same and I enjoy the painting weathering aspect of modeling a lot.  However, this one sure is neat.  Plus, I guess at a contest the field would be super level as all you'd be looking at is construction since every paint chip, panel line and scuff would be identical between models.  So maybe this is a plus!!

Not to mention, you can sure airbrush these to your heart's content and even get rid of the renderings entirely with a coat of primer and have at it.  I like paper models because they provide models of planes I like but that are not out there or too pricey for me.   I did hear about a lovely resin D-1 to the tune of $220.  Just too much especially when my paper model cost me $7 to download and another $1.50 to print at Office Depot.  ;D  I did just order a couple of neat WWI subjects in paper...a Halberstatd D-II/III and a Friedrichschaffen twin float plane I saw parts of in Denmark.  Can't wait to start those...stay tuned.

I have no affiliation with this site, but here are a bunch of possibilities for downloads:

Be warned!  These are really addictive.  Ask your friend!  ;)

Thanks for the kind words...Dan

Dan,
I see your point, he has a filing cabinet full of them, says he's got several hundred downloaded, half of them printed as he does Armour as well. Now, that's a Stash!! :o

Hi Rick and Lance...NEXT time, it will be in the finished area!

Here it is all rigged.  Only needs guns, a prop, wheels and a windshield...

Lance and anyone else interested!

Here is a paper site that has lots of free downloads of all things WWI.  It has artillery, tanks, armored cars and planes too.  Both in 1/72nd and 48th...though you could make them any scale you wanted within reason.  I've built several of these and they turned out neat.

http://www.landships.info/landships/models.html

Look under "Models" and you'll find these.  All free.  All you need to do is get some slightly thicker paper and print away...it's a nice way to test the waters without spending a ton o' bucks.

Cheers,
Dan

Thanks Juan and Rick...

Before I post this guy over in the completed section, I did need to make the prop.  This turned out to take a bit of doing as I didn't want to cheat as much as I have before and just use a spare WNW prop!  So I used the paper parts on the kit.  Trouble was, it looked a little anemic and, well...like two pieces of paper stuck to a tiny cylinder hub!  So I beefed it up a bit with putty and sanding etc.  It looks better...not perfect...but better.
