(romain Hugault drawing)

The Morane Saulnier type AI ( militaire name MoS29 et MoS30) will cloce my Navarre plane theme, but other wise fit well in an another thematic: the Morane Saulnier parasol planes

I have three of them :

 type L
(http://nsm07.casimages.com/img/2018/01/03//18010305504323469215435271.jpg)

 MS 225

 MS230

A fourth one will be welcome! !

It will be to the ocasion to work for first time with war end french 5 color camouflage.

Beautiful collection Xan, it's a pleasure to scroll through your Navarre chronicle here, each model is a gem on it's own! The A1 will be a fitting conclusion to your story. Great work!!

superb stuff. the collection gallery and the real photos made the thread into much more than a construction thread.

can you tell i'm a Navarre fanboy.

Great project – although it was a little bit foreseeable, don't you agree?  ;)
I will follow that closely! Did I understand you properly and you are planning to build a whole series of Morane parasol planes? I am eagerly thinking about doing a Morane Saulnier P one day, if any usable information on the interior and well drawn plans should come to light...
Best regards

Ah, that type L was yours (found it somewhere in the internet) it is so great!
Good luck with you new Morane! I have also the Hugault comic and the SH kit, but this has a very low priority in my bigger stash for a simple reason: I want to build in a Gnome N, and this typ is (not yet?) available from Small Stuff. So I have enough Small Stuff engines of available types and enough matching kits to build before.

Cheers,
Frank

Looking forward to this, as the AI is one of my all time favorites! I was very happy with how mine came out, not too many pitfalls for me to stumble through. Good luck with it!

Frank, have you tried any Copper State resin engines? They have a Gnome 9n and it goes together very nicely.

Thank you for the hint to CSM, I was aware of this engine. This will be my fallback solution. Anyway, there are many kits on my prio list before  ;)

I did the cockpit in a quite simple way.

There in green what is represented and in red what is not , but I did not want to pass a lot of time there....

and well, it is an special hobby model....
cockpit didn't feet, and I had to sand a lot, but at last i closed it

next operation the fuselage had not the right form.
I have not vocabulary enough to explain it in english, but I hope the pics will speak by themself....

I put a lot of surfacer and after a long while I sanded it:

then surfacer again with airbrush and this is the result:

a pic before/after shows the result:

quite closer to the reality IMO

I have now to do the front part , and there is work to be done too....

Xan

WOW Xan, fantastic idea! the metal lines stop the sanding paper to give the plane an "angled" look more than a "round" look...
I love that intuition!

Antonio

I have this kit, but I am sure I won't be able to make a similar thing!

Hi everybody!

I went on with the front side.

the morane AI front side is organized in three parts just liike in this Morane type P:

Below, a fixed part in 1, upper fixed part in 2 and a mobil lateral part in 4 with hinges in each side (3)

first the low part done with palstic card, surfacer and aluminium tape

then I usde plastic card to represent the lateral parts. i wanted to represent that metal parts take the fuselage form

then the upper part , only with surfacer

The Navarre Morane is a MoS 30 type , unarmed trainig plane, so i don't know if I had to represent the hinges in 2. in the doubt I did....

then archer rivets and hinges.

I didn't like at all the archer hinges effect so I did them again :

find it better:

final result:

hinges are a little bit oversize but below the wing, it will be OK
akyway better that how it was at the begining...

next step , the engine and the cowling

Xan

Beautiful work so far Xan, but so sad to see what Navarre looked like in 1915 and then in 1918.  I have a more than passing interest in him, so will watch this build with great interest, hopefully it will inspire me to get back to work on my N11

Hello!
I am preparing the struts

Of course i broke all my drills before I ended the stuff...
so I had to buy again in internet...
Meanwhile, let' see another thing...

Paint!

1 step, colour definition and gunze or tamiya equivalences...

but let's beginning with an historic...

since middle of 1916 french plan's fabrics are covered with silver dope wich protect it againt UV

in the beginnning of 1917 colour pigment are introduced in the dope keeping the aluminium pigment.
and a five colour camouflage is proposed. Bur it is still dope and not paint.
Ripolin propose paint in the same colors for metal and wooden parts.

here the 5 colour sheme:

As far as I know, two autochrome show us this camouflage:deux autochromes qui nous montrent ce camouflage:

In "Cross and cockades" the "butterfly" project worked on this camouflage un the 70's  and later Alan Toelle wote an article about this camouflage in the Windsock vol.30 n°1

we can found here the proportion of diferents pigments of each color

Lance Krieg applied those mix in his models.

Marc Chassard French specialist of french WWI aviaiton went more far:
He bought fabric, dope and pigments, and applied the dope in the fabric as it was done in 1917, respecting all the coats...
then, he cutted little piece and propose a colour shart very accurate...

it was my reference to find equivalences in gunze or tamiya.
i took alll the paints i had aronud the fabric colour and test them

here is the result colour by colour:

beige
(http://nsm09.casimages.com/img/2018/04/07//18040705563623469215655985.jpg)

light green
(http://nsm09.casimages.com/img/2018/04/07//18040705563823469215655988.jpg)

dark green
(http://nsm09.casimages.com/img/2018/04/07//18040705563923469215655989.jpg)

brown
(http://nsm09.casimages.com/img/2018/04/07//18040705563723469215655987.jpg)

light yellow
(http://nsm09.casimages.com/img/2018/04/07//18040705563723469215655986.jpg)

final result:

just have to test it now....

in a second step i will try to resolve how to represent the metalic aspect of the dope

just have to test it now....
That's what I did ...
horreur!

what i ridiculuos with my methodic approach...
so I take again and look for colors closer at the Chassard colour chart.
In fact, I rework the light green and the beige.
And that is what I reach:

the global tonality seems to be OK thiis time

so, here the new equivalences:

Paint seems OK comparing with the chart, we have noow to compare the chart with other elements....

Thanks Rag!

well the color are quite strange to our eyes and a little far of what we are used to see on 5 colour french camouflage...
particullary the light green, very "zinc chromate".....

but in this original 5 colours camouflage scheme: the light green is in the same tonality...

Of course we have to hve in mind it could be a lot odf diferences betwwen dopes, because there was a lot of providers...

But this proposition seems coherent for me because it have been done after a serius work, so i keep go on with it....

second challenge, represent the metalic appearence of the fabric...

42% of each color pigment were aluminium flakes; it had to have a inlfuence.

fabric parts around the squadron symbol put side by side show as an evidence the metallic appearence of the fabric:...

After a lot of trys, rub'n'buf dry brushing mixing alclad with paint, and more thing I had allways the same problem when the paint was shiny enought it lost its original colour.
At last i find a way: mixing rub'b'buf with mealt withwhite spirit (a hard dilution)

the colour remain and it shine in fonction ooof the light just as I wanted....

show can go on, i think this  problem is resolved!

Your color experiments are really convincing, Xan.
Just for my interest: I know in some British colors (e. g. Brunswick green for artillery pieces) there were components that blackened over the years. So many British artillery pieces seem to have been much lighter 100 years ago than they appear today in their museums. Could that be the case with French aircraft colors as well?

here is the result , quite psychedelic:
