Yes...another one! My wife got me this guy for Christmas and as we were traveling at that time, I just opened this yesterday and I'm super pleased! The kit looks fabulous in the box as usual...

I just started on the engine. All is going well at this early stage...though there are several molding lugs that are decidedly un-WNW-like at least comparing the few I've built. There are also some interesting molding strategies like the very delicate piping on the rear cylinder molding having a nice flash lug that needs careful attention or you'll fatigue it right off! Also, try as I might, there will be some careful filling along the engine seams to make it look as nice as possible. See the pictures below ( the cylinder jacket is just sitting for show and I'll paint it up a bit tomorrow):

Don't get me wrong...it's lovely and I can't wait to get it all together. The cockpit looks like a real treat as well. I personally love the seat cushion molding. ;D

Dan, I think the engine is one of WnW's oldest models, stemming from the SE5a "Hisso", which was one of their very first kits.

Great to see you making a start on this kit Dan, I am still working on the engine of my kit. The engine is the same as the one Wingnuts used for the SE.5a kit, the sprue is dated 2007. I will be following your build and picking up any pointers you may reveal.

Another Dolphin on the forum. I will be following to see you work through this and what scheme you plan on doing. That is the SE.5 Hisso with a few mods thrown in, unless you leave the upper hood off, the only thing visible are the valve covers and exhaust manifolds.

Thanks for the info, fellas...it's not that it's unbuildable! The last WNW kit I made (The Snipe) was the closest I've ever come to adding the proverbial glue and shaking the box. It FAR surpassed any single wing, simple plane fitting I've ever built! That thing fit like a dream.
Anyway, more later tonight after some detail painting etc.

Thanks, all...these kits really make you look much better than you really are. It's a fun one to put together so far. Lots of care in painting details will yield huge dividends. Here are the basic cockpit parts done. I'll rig them all tomorrow. Everything you see is just pushed together. Pretty amazing.

I agree with all of the above. it's nice to see too that you got the engine in first. I failed to see that step and put the magazines in first. I think that is part of the problem. You shouldn't have any problems. It goes together well and you are doing an outstanding job on it. I am looking forward to following your build as well.

Thanks so much, All! And Mark...thanks to you especially. I didn't fully appreciate what you said about there being lots that go into that cockpit area and the sequence of events. I'll need to go back and re-read your log since I made it all fit, but man...it was a struggle!

All I can say is that the magazine/gun parts are almost impossible to get in. There are large lugs (you can see those just in front of the cabanes in the first pic) that fit into slots under the gun mounts and it seems that even the tiniest amount of paint will make them very difficult to slip in. Added to that, there are two small pipes that are supposed to go into holes on either side of this assembly and I could not make the geometry work until I actually cut those little nibs off. Those are the copper tubes you see in the first shot running from the cockpit and on the inside of the cabanes. Then, I could slide the structure straight down, gently spread the cabanes and locate another two pegs on either side. Those last two holes needed to be enlarged a hair (again due to paint?). Not an easy job!
Then...I didn't really understand why Mark said that it's good to start with the engine first...until I tried putting it in for real! It is very tough to get the mags under/between the ammo assemblies. It all fits, but it takes some gentle persuasion which is rather nerve wracking as all that fine PE and delicate plastic parts can't really take the stress. I was really worried I'd botch the whole thing. In the end, it looks fantastic and is really the show piece of the model with that open upper wing so WNW has certainly delivered! I just wonder if the computer engineers may have made the tolerances a bit too tight for an actual modeler to build! Of course, this could all be modeler-induced and Des and Rick will slap it together with absolutely no issues! :P ::) ;D ;)
All is well, and I can't wait to continue on her some more...

Like Mark's Build this is a very educational Thread. It'll be worth it's weight in gold when I tackle mine. I certainly can see your points about how busy that cockpit is, that's a tremendous amount of stuff all crammed into a very small space. Great work thus far and I look forward to more!

I got the last of the interior parts and rigging on and then got the fuselage closed. Fit like a glove!

Thanks so much, you guys. This one has been on my list for a long time. Now if WNW would just do a Halberstadt D-II or a DH-5 I'd pretty much be in heaven...
Here is a very tiny update. I got most of the major details on like radiators, cowling, landing gear etc. and got the basic paint scheme on. One upper panel is supposed to be a different color than the rest based on WNW saying it was replaced due to flak damage. I like it since it adds interest. There was lots of tricky masking in the nose but it turned out ok!

I'll give it a coat of Future, let her dry and put on the decals tomorrow. They it will really start to look the part!
Man...once you get to a certain point on these WNW models, things just steam roll to a finish. ;)

Extra bonus...the first shot has my lovely 1:1 wife knitting in the background. Nice weathering. AND a salt shaker T-Rex.

Thanks Des, Gary and Rick...tonight I got the wheels finished and installed, the rib tapes picked out a bit and the interplanes glued to the bottom wing. It's hard to see, but I also added some semi-random patches with the base color to simulate fixed battle damage. I'll show that more when it's done, though.

I think tat this certainly looks worn but I also think that you should follow Andreas' advice and clean it in fresh water: I am sure that you will be able to get a more realistic effect.

Hello All...
I washed it off last night and scrubbed away and now that the salt is gone, it looks pretty cool. If anything, the effect needs to be more pronounced. I assumed then salt bits would cover the old paint color and as I misted over it with other shades, I'd get areas of different hues. Maybe my oversprays needed to be thicker? Anyway, I'll post another shot soon. This just needs some more experimenting!

Here it is all washed and brushed off. You can barely see the effect on the underside near the wheels. I put lots of salt there and used multiple sprays of very dilute but browner tints.
