Gents hi
While I continue to plug away at the WnW W.12 I could not resist diving in with this one once I found a kit.
Having missed the boat with both the Blue Max kit and the Pheon decals I was really pleased find this version which has the markings for the US Navy planes which is exactly what I was after.

I am aware there are some issues with the hull shape of this kit, but I'm otherwise please with the quality and look of the parts. It will be interesting to see how it builds

I am looking forward to seeing your progress on this one.

Wonderful choice Pete. Looking forward to your progress.
Although not the same scale, Des did this A/C in 1/32: http://www.ww1aircraftmodels.com/page52.html may help, not sure if you had seen it.

Cheers gents.
Juan - yes I read Des's build thread a couple of weeks, back, and almost went for the 1/32 kit, but I'll start small. Maybe next time if WnW don't turn their hands to flying boats.

Roughly getting things sorted so I can get the fuselage halves joined.
The pilot should be in a Bf-109, but he's the best I've got :P
...and the eagle eyed among you will see I'm attempting to alter the shape of the bow - it remains to be seen how successful this will be.

Looking good so far! Terrific start!

Another flying boat! This will be a build thread to follow - so I will!

Well the fuselage halves are joined, the pilot is in his pit, and milliput applied to the seams.

Looking good Pete and the pilot fits the part. ;D

Your build has put this aircraft into my field of view, so I looked around a bit and was able to find it. Just ordered, even the stash is already big enough ::)
Thank you, I will watch your progress.
Cheers,

Excellent work so far Pete, the pilot looks good in his position, looking forward to seeing more progress on this build.

Real life has let me get back to the Macchi and W.12, and it's poignant that the previous post, some time ago now, was from Des. He is sorely missed
Anyways some progress with a lot of white around at the moment

and a question for the M-5 experts. I plan on doing this aircraft as Mutt2 with the red and white stripes on the body, however I'm finding conflicting information regarding the markings.
The kit decals (Fly) show the roundels and rudder markings as red white and blue, whereas other sources suggest these are as on the Italian M-5's being red white and green. My suspicion is the latter is most likely correct.
Secondly the kit shows the underside of the wings (where not painted red and green) being white, but again I've seen suggestions this might have been CDL.
Thoughts anybody

I do not have the answers to your questions but I can say that your boat is Beautifully Painted

The painting is awesome! I don't know about the roundels or underwing. Too little info on too many subjects from way back then.

looks great - fantastic paint work!
I do not have any proof but I would go with red white green roundels and rudder, with red, CDL, green under the top wing personally....
-
Beautiful job thus far, Pete!
According to the Datafile, US Navy personnel took over a number of Italian coastal air bases, including the aircraft still in Italian markings. The only modifications to these markings were the addition of Squadron and personal markings. Petrov27 is 100% correct.

Cheers gents - CDL it is on the underside which was my inclination. I couldn't really see the underside of the wings being painted (doped) white as a personal marking - far too much work in a wartime situation.
and it looks so much better

Aviattic 1/32 French Linen (on clear decal paper) - what the hell it looks the part.

The CDL linen decals and red and green look great!

At last I've bitten the bullet and am working to finish this off. My procrastination was in the main due to concerns with how the kit builds. The lower wings have only one small location pin on each side, and yet take the weight of pretty much the entire model. I was also concerned as to how to construct the engine cradle which is very fragile. In addition the kit plastic is very brittle and pretty much all of the thin elements have snapped at some stage as can be seen.
Anyways enough of the excuses

The tail and top wing have yet to be fixed in place, with a little more paint work required along with the floats.
I really want to have another go at the Macchi, but in 1/32 so the big question is do I get the HpH kit, or wait for the mythical
Aviattic kit ???
All thoughts welcome

Oh, this model seaplane looks totally nice!
I will definitely do the same colors, if I start mine. Thanks for the update - and the warnings regarding kit plastic.
