Title: Nieuport 17 cockpit - what is this?
Post by: RLWP on September 03, 2017, 10:00:25 PM
Searching around for images (as you do), I found this:

on this excellent site: http://www.wbhaviland.net/zzni17cp.html

There are some great images on that site: http://www.wbhaviland.net/index.html

Anyway, what is the rectangular thing with a little wheel on it?

Is it a scrolling map?

Richard,
I can't point you to a specific Thread here however IIRC one or several of our members debated this issue a year or more ago and some proof that it is indeed a "scrolling" type of map holder resulted. Perhaps another member of the Forum with a better memory then mine can recall the specifics or the reference to confirm the info.
Cheers,
Lance

It's damn useful, in that location it hides quite a bit of the interior

Certainly a Map holder but how "Standard"  it was I am not sure. Another interesting thing on this Nieuport is the rectangular looking thing on the upper deck. If I am not mistaken a "Gun Camera". Makes me wonder if this was a Training Aircraft?

Not sure about the first picture, in the second picture the weapon is a pretty standard Vickers still carrying the gun sight for a ground based gun. I think the thing jury rigged to the cockpit edge may be a clock

Richard,
Found it! Take a look here, I think it's your "mystery item".

Excellent work!

Top image is a Nieuport 17 no it isn't, no headrest

And it looks like the thing I though was a clock is either a rev counter (which might have been hidden by the map) or an altimeter

The French guns do often seem to have the rear sight in place. It also has the Alkan-Hamy synchroniser with the cocking lever operated by the wire lever above the windscreen. I'm not sure what that little tee-handle sticking out on the port side does, it is also a feature of French guns:

They do look quite different to the Brit guns

Guess what I was sticking together last night...
