My next project will be one of my favorite WW1 aircraft, the Sopwith Triplane! I love it enough that I have 3 more 1:48 kits in waiting, a 1:32 WNW version, and a set of Replicraft plans to take on a full scale version at some point! Here are the box and sprue shots.

For markings, I chose C.D. Booker's scheme (same one I plan to do full scale) using an Aeromaster set.

I built an Eduard Triplane long ago as my second ww1 kit ever, and still have it. I believe I was 11 or 12 when I built it. It's had a fair share of spills and thrills, but I still was impressed at how it went together. I'll do a separate thread at some point on that kit and its misadventures. One question I have before I set forth, however: I know Booker's tripe was Sopwith-built, but I have not found anything definitive about whether it had the early or late tailplane. Does anyone here know? My plan is to use the late-style if nothing definitive comes about, as it's been published that early ones were retrofitted in the field with the later design. Time to get to work!
-
I can't answer your question, Ian, but sense that your judgement is right.
Good luck with this build, The Sopwith Triplane is one of my favourite aircraft. If I rmember rightly from my own experience a few years back, the key to this kit lies in getting the struts which are embedded in the fuselage accurately in place.
Best wishes
Nigel

Slowly picking away at my triplane, nothing too exciting yet, but I am doing an engine upgrade. anyone that's done one of these early Eduard kits knows their rotaries are a little lacking in the detail department.

fortunately, I have in the stash the Eduard Camel double combo set, and at least one of those two is getting re-engined when the time comes. seeing as this is a really good moulding, I pirated the Clerget form one of these sets to use in the triplane. It assembled better than I was hoping, not perfect by any means but much better than I was capable of when I first started WW1 modeling.

I still need to glue down the spark plug leads, but I think it's presentable. more updates as they come.

Super work on the engine upgrade! I am looking forward to your progress!

Thank you Rick! I have about 85% of my initial painting finished, about to start on the cockpit. It's thought to get time to work on the tripehound at the moment, as I'm a teacher and school is starting up again, but I steal away to the workstation when I can!
-
Nice start, I'm interested to see how this builds up in a larger scale.
Ian
-
Good start, Ian. The replacement engine quite looks the part, much better than the early Eduard offering. I'll be following this thread with interest. Good Luck! 8)
-
It's been a while since I could sit and update my thread, and though there hasn't been a huge amount of progress, there has been plenty going on behind the scenes!
First, a word about Eduard's customer service. While I was building my Hanriot HD.1, the resin headrest was missing. I contacted Eduard, and they sent me 3 extra resin trees at no charge, and they included the seat cushion and headrest. Now I had several spares, so I decided my triplane deserves one! with a little bit of sanding, the cushion fits right in.

Next, I decided to begin working on the cockpit, and try rigging it after having some success with my Fokker D.VIII. Since the Eduard instructions don't include cockpit rigging, I pulled out my WNW instructions. with some 6 lb test monofilament fishing line, I'm getting relatively convincing cables!

Now I had intended on waiting to build my WNW triplane as my first Wingnuts kit, but I wanted to find a set of Pheon decals for it, specifically the Booker markings as that is my favorite triplane garb. I posted in the for sale-trade-swap section hoping for the best, and lo and behold the incredibly generous Gary AKA Trackpad stumbled across my post and has sent that set and a few others my way! Now I must keep my fingers crossed and my eyes peeled for WNW to do a multi-kit release like they did with the Albatros! Anyways, since I already had the kit off the shelf to use the rigging diagram, I figured I may as well start it and build a set of twins! I've started work on the engine, and I like the size comparison between the two scales.

Looking good, Ian. I'll be following this thread with interest. Good luck as you work with "the Twins!" 8)

Outstanding work on updating the cockpit of the Eduard kit. I am looking forward to the "Dual" build also!

Brief update today. I have finished the WNW Clerget sans the spark plug wires, which I'll wait for until I'm ready to mount the engine in an effort not to lose them. I also assembled the instrument panel for the Eduard Triplane, and will be tackling the wnw Triplane cockpit next. Also, happily I received a very well-packaged and protected set of selected Sopwith Triplane decals by Pheon from Gary aka Trackpad! I have not uploaded any pictures of the latest adventures as of yet, but I shall soon! Many thanks to Gary for his generosity. Pictures following soon!
-
Finally uploading some pictures! I wish I had a bit more progress to show, but the weather for the past 3-day weekend resulted in a wash for model building. 97-98% humidity every day, so uncomfortable and unproductive was the name of the game. Anyways, first the generosity of Trackpad!

During the unproductive streak, I did stumble upon coyotemagic's thread on his Tripehound dual build, which took nearly the exact same course as mine is! I can only hope that mine comes close to as nice as his pairing. I've had a few frustrations, but things are mostly coming together nicely. first frustration was the Eduard instrument panel. I had the film and the PE panel nicely lined up, but the PE shifted ever so slightly as the glue dried and the instruments ended up off-center in their bezels.

After that, the cockpit came together nicely. I've begun working on the WNW cockpit as well, but I have not made a lot of progress yet. I do have a side-by-side of the two for comparison.

Impressive to see these two tripes being built side by side. Looking forward to your progress.

I love the scale comparison of your build and both interiors are looking really fine. I am keen on seeing which kit you like more ;)

Thanks! It is fun seeing them side by side and going together at the same time. I do really like this WNW kit, but I have already built one of the Eduard Tripes some 20-something years ago, and fell in love with it then. I still have it, it's been rebuilt at least 4 times now thanks to moving, curious children, and my own clumsiness. I'll post some pictures of that wonderful but unfortunate bird here shortly with some tales of its adventures too.
-
I am enjoying seeing them bith come together. The Eduard interior is really looking sharp! I am looking forward to seeing the WNW in the same stage!

Thank you Rick! I feel I need to get it there ASAP, before something falls and snaps my control stick!
Here's some pictures of my first Eduard Triplane. I was somewhere between 12 and 14 when I built this, and didn't know a whole lot about color schemes back then. it was also my very first kit with PE. Some of the pushrods are a bit mangled, but it came out fairly good in my opinion. funny note- at the time, I painted all of my wheels all black because I couldn't paint steady enough to just get paint on the tire part. I've made some marginal improvement since then. These first pictures were taken when I brought the kit from my parents' house to mine, and en route a wheel broke off. it repaired easily, and it appeared unscathed.

Shortly after these pictures were taken, my then 3-year-old daughter decided to investigate my model shelf, and knocked it onto the floor. She was devastated, but I told her not to worry because I wanted to repaint it anyways and now I had an excuse to! The upper and one middle wing came off, but there was no other damage. I decided to go all CDL and do the Prototype, and I was happy with the results. I even got the wings aligned better that originally. Alas, when I was taking it off the shelf to photograph, I dropped it. by some miracle only the middle wings came off this time, but upon the next rebuild no coaxing or clamping or bracing would align them to where they belonged. I gave up before breaking it any further, and now it sits semi-proudly on the shelf.

It has been quite a while since I've had something worth posting here! I have been plugging away at both kits, but all the progress has been so small and minor it did not merit posting. I now have bot cockpit modules finished, and at a point where there is a tangible result! That, and I can finally turn pages in the instruction books!
This build is the very first time I have ever used monofilament line for rigging. Though I find it challenging, it has not been as scary as I was expecting and the outcome has mostly been what I was hoping for. I've only had a few stubborn lines that would not sit the way I wanted and 2 that came loose, and the I'm not dreading repairing them, so I guess that means I'm learning!

All that remains to rig the WNW cockpit is the cross cables in the back, the trim wheel cables, and to re-attach the lines that came loose.
When put side by side, it is impressive to see the difference in the level of detail the two kits provide, and the size difference.

Things are progressing nicely with the twins! I have successfully closed up both the fuselages, added the guns, and added their fuselage markings. the WNW bird took a fair bit of paint scraping, but finally i did get the sides where i wanted them.

Thank you gentlemen! It is challenging fitting in time to work on any modeling project when he’s awake, but his big sister (5 years old) really likes my models and loves to watch! It has been a slower build for me than usual as I want to get my first Wingnuts kit right, but I have “resolved” to complete them before New Years. Hopefully I’ll have some photographic proof of that soon. Along those lines, I’ve noticed that my WNW kit decals, though beautiful, don’t adhere very strongly; particularly the rudder blazes. Does anyone have any tricks to getting them to settle down securely? I’m worrying about when it comes time to do the roundels on the wings. Merry Christmas everyone!
-
Happy New Year, Everyone!
Almost there! I came so close to keeping my resolution! While it still needs touch-up painting, a few more decals, and rigging, I did manage to structurally finish one of the two triplanes! My first WNW build is nearly finished! here's a few pictures from yesterday and today. Now I plan to get the Eduard tripe to the same point, and then rig them both at the same time. Enjoy the pictures!

Hi Ian:
I am just now catching up on your builds. Both are coming along nicely. Yes, the PHEON decals went on my build perfectly and it was a fun albeit challenging build with the resin fuselage. If you are having difficulty with the decals setting try using Solvaset. I know a lot of people warn against it, but it's a milder solution than earlier releases and with careful application makes the decals set right up. Also the old hair drier method works too. I have used both with good affect. Now the fun part.........RIGGING!. ;)

Thank you Mark for the kind words and helpful hints! My roundels behaved far better than the rudder blazes, they all sat right down where they belonged, even in the aileron gaps. as misfortune would have it, my son broke the rudder off. while changing a diaper, I glanced up at it on my workbench, and thought I saw something amiss. I was wrong, but while I was inspecting it, my son walked over and headbutted the tail, snapping the rudder off cleanly and shattering the decals on both sides. I've never seen that happen before! There was no other damage; I can't believe the control horns survived but I am grateful they did! I have a spare set of rudder blazes in my pup kit, so I will try again with those, and if they are reluctant to lay down, I'll try the hair dryer trick first and the solvent if needed. thanks again, and by the way, excellent work on your dolphin!

Hello again everyone, getting ever closer to the end of this build! It is time to give my little Eduard tripe some love. The wings attach to this kit in a slightly more unusual way: the cabanes are mounted to the fuselage, and then the top wing is put into place. once it is mounted, it's important to make sure it is at the same angle of incidence as the lower wing, and that it is parallel to it as well. once it is where you want it to be, give the glue ample time to set!

after the glue has formed a nice firm bond, the middle wing and struts are swung into place. it's somewhat fiddly, and its crucial to trim the strut opening and the cabane attach point so the middle wing can be angled correctly. At this point, I have not glued the middle wings at all, I have only glued the strut in place. The geometry of the middle wing looks funny, but the leading and trailing edges are all parallel right now, which is the important thing. once the glue on the struts cures, I will place the middle wings where they belong with the correct dihedral and incidence. coming along!

Looking very nice Ian! It looks as though you got the fiddly wing alignment done well.

You are on the finishing line with this pair. Well done!

Hello Ian:
You are getting there alright. Interesting about the "headbutting" incident on the WNW Tripehound and thanks for your kind words on the Dolphin. Each kit is certainly a learning experience. Hopefully your Tripehounds will be able to make to the end without further ado or head butting. They will make a neat combo.

Thanks Mark, Borsos, and Rick! I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel! I have the middle wings placed where they should be, and couldn't resist getting it "on its feet" and adding the prop. all that remains for this girl now is paint touch-ups, the PE control horns and brackets on the struts, and rigging.

I also repaired the damage to the WNW tripe from the "head-butting" incedent. The kit rudder blaze decals shattered when my son crashed his cranium into the rudder, so I used the blazes from my RFC pup kit. the only issue here was that the blue stripe is considerably lighter than the darker RNAS blue, but it is what it is.

I have a Pheon RNAS pup set, but I'm saving them for when I do the pup kit as "Mildred H." Sometimes i paint the rudder blazes, but I wanted to contrast the blue vertical fin on MAUD. I'm still happy with the results thus far. next post will likely find them both complete! Thanks for checking in! For fun, a size contrast:

Hello everyone! It has been quite some time since I've posted in this thread; my 1 year old son has drastically slowed my progress on this pair of triplanes. since my last posting, I have almost fully rigged the WNW bird. I have already tensioned the landing gear and tail rigging, and all went well there. One of my top wing lines fell off while I was attaching it, so once that and my aileron cables are run, I will be finished with this one! Then it's PE and rigging on the eduard tripe and this project will be finished! here's the WNW triplane progress.

Well, it has been a very long time, but at long last I have completed the Wingnut Wings Triplane. after 2 separate rigging disasters, I nearly gave up on it. Fortunately, I happened on some Prym elastic thread and was finally successful. The end result was not as clean as I would have liked, thanks to much of the damage from the first two attempts. Here are some pictures of the end result, some paired with the Eduard triplane which is about 98% complete, just final PE and rigging on that one. I'm going to shelve it for now so I can get cracking on the Group build entries.

Thank you Rick! I tried doing all monofilament, but when trying to tension the lines using a hair dryer, my then 1.5 year old son (who also spurred the first rigging disaster) ran full tilt into my leg, which caused me to drop the hair dryer onto the kit! I almost gave up on it then, but the chances of coming across another set of Pheon triplane decals in that scheme i felt were pretty slim. fortunately the damage was repairable and not tremendously obvious. Happy to have my first Wingnut Wings kit in the books!
