Title: Dual Build: Roden 1/32nd Albatros DIII (OAW): Jasta 10, WNW ALbatrosDV: Jasta11
Post by: RAGIII on July 25, 2017, 04:29:23 AM
Well it has been a few days since I finished the triple build so here is my next project. As far as I know Roden is the only company to accurately depict the nose panels on an OAW DIII. That being said they missed on a couple of details. The most obvious is the wing radiator which is oversized. I am posting a photo of Bos radiator over an enlarged drawing from the Data file. As Ray gave permission to do this in another thread I am assuming he has no issues here. If so I will gladly delete the photo. I am also posting a photo of the kit rudder with an outline from the WNW Albatros DV rudder drawn on. If I am correct they should be the same size?

So my first work will be to correct the radiator. I will probably use the WNW radiator and save the Bo version for the WNW kit.

Looking forward to this one! I'm not a huge Albi expert, but I think you are right about the rudder size.

Hi Rick:

This was one of my first WWI builds.  I will be following along to watch what you do.  These Roden kits, albeit not up WNW standards, turn into a nice model.
(http://i942.photobucket.com/albums/ad261/ptbarnum101/Marks%20WWI%20Subjects/ALBDIII-Candystriper.jpg) (http://s942.photobucket.com/user/ptbarnum101/media/Marks%20WWI%20Subjects/ALBDIII-Candystriper.jpg.html)

Are you going to do it in the "Candy Striper" scheme?  I found it extremely challenging to paint the stripes and keep them evenly spaced, still a striking scheme.

I too am looking forward to this project Rick. If it is only half as good as the triplanes it will still be a front runner in my estimation. If you do choose the red/white stripe scheme that will be a real challenge - but I'll bet you will get it right all the same.

Stephen.

Yes Rick:   It was my first or second foray into WWI, it still graces my shelf here in AZ.  I am looking forward to see what you do with this old 'chestnut' as it is a pretty decent kit.

I have begun the work on fitting the new radiator. I outlined the new radiator with a scribing tool in its proper location. Then I used a RB productions saw to cut out the opening. I test fitted constantly as I went through the process. The photos show the initial rough cut and dry fitting of the replacement. I am also including shots of some of the PE goodies I will use. Part of Poland and the PE from an Encore Albatros DII. I will pick and choose the pieces I want to use.

Since I took the photos I have gone back and Tweaked the location. I moved it back a fraction and made sure all was aligned properly.

RAGIII

PS: The radiator PE on the Part set is oversized just like the kit. The Encore PE Radiator is pretty close to being correct but represents what I believe to be an earlier version.

Thanks for looking in and commenting Mark! I do like the Roden kits in spite of the extra work required. In addition I really like the Albatros in particular, one of my favorite WW1 Arcrafft. This will be my third Roden version and fifth Albatros overall in 1/32nd scale.

Really nice start Rick, and that scheme is one of my favourites for the D.III, really representative of the "wooden finish" birds. I may have to keep my eyes open for one of these, I really enjoyed the one that started me into 1:32 Scale and as someone has said here, "you can never have enough Albies"!
Cheers,
Lance

A small update: I have painted the seat and cushion, installed the seat belts and the bar containing the instrument at the front of the cockpit. Nrxt up working on the engine. Also will do some weathering to the belts and interior and add a couple of wires to the stick.

Thanks Stephen, greatly appreciated! I have made faster progress than expected so another update: The interior only lacks a couple of wires and a small amount of touch up. I have joined the fuselage halves with the exception of the front which I left unglued for fitting the engine.

I am sure you will notice the piece of sprue in front of the engine. I had to install this to properly space the forward fuselage/spinner opening. As I did not have to do this on previous Roden Albatri I assume there was warpage or I just screwed up  ???

So here are two tales. Believe the one you want to  8)
1. I decided to open the cowlings because several of my peers here commented that it was a shame to cover up the detail on the engine and bay.  8)
2. I attached the cowl /cockpit covering as planned and even after the spreader was added and a butt load of sanding I did not get a fit I was satisfied with so I removed the metal portion of the engine cover and will leave off the panels  >:(

Actually the Answer is yes...and no. Acrylic oils by Windsor Newton with a "Rust" Filter by Testors brushed over. I also used Tamiya clear orange over the stringers and cross x bracing.

Stephen.

Thanks Stephen. I will use oils as always for the wood tones.

I have added the other bands since the last photos. The outer black bands are a bit too wide but will be narrowed when I mask off the band to paint the base for the wood fuselage.

Spectacular "woodwork" in fact Rick, it jumps right out as a very natural look. Great job, I'm going to try to duplicate the very light blonde effect you've created here however I suspect duplicating your quality of finish will be far out of reach. As you can tell, I'm most impressed. Well done! 8) 8) 8)

Thanks for the very generous comment Lance. I have always tried to give an "Impression" of wood vs doing a lot of grain. In this case I used Acrylic Oils, raw sienna. I actually ended up not liking the acrylic oils in this use. It took a few hours to dry but began to be difficult to blend in just a few minutes. My DV will have traditional oils used for this purpose. I am certain that you will attain even better esults when you get to the point of doing one of these!

Good recovery Rick on those stripes.  I like the wood affect you have achieved  on this model.  As mentioned and to belabor the point, but Roden kits build into decent models and their DIII is the only game in town.  You are doing an outstanding job on this and I look forward to following along as you progress.

Thanks for the comment Ian. I am not a master by any means. The wood is simply raw sienna oils brushed over an acrylic tan base. Remove all of the pigment with a wide brush leaving just the impression of light and dark.  ;)

Great Albatros and the blue rib tapes are a great idea. I think they are dark enough for even shining through the camouflage colors which would even increase its impact on the overall appearance.

Thanks Ed. I hope to do just that! Something I keep forgetting to mention is the fairings blending in the fuselage and wing. Roden gives the rear fairing common with their DI kit. I saw no evidence that the fairings should be any different than a standard DIII/ shorter fairing. The funny thing is the original DIII fairing was included in the DI kit so I used that on my model.

Hi Rick.

Pretend I don't know that much about WW I aviation; which I don't, so you're not really pretending, but anyway. The rib tapes .... Do they go under lozenge fabric or over? Or are your albatri not going to have lozenge. Sorry, I didn't leaf through all the pages of this thread.

They go on top. Fabric is stretched onto the wing frame, then stitched onto the ribs (I'd have to look up exactly how). This stiching is covered over with the rib tapes

Richard is correct reference the tapes. WNW molds the indication of the ribs and tapes on their Albatros DV. I will be using Aviattic Lozenge cookie cutter decals for the wings on the DV. So the ribs and tape indication will show blue rib tapes. On the Roden DIII their is no indication of tapes in the molding. I have applied the tapes to indicate their presence. The Jasta 10 OAW DIII I am doing has Lilak/Mauve and green camo so I am hoping for just a slight tape indication and just a tad darker appearance after painting. I hope your question is answered. If not let me know and I will try harder  8)

I found this:

It is from Aeronautical Engineering published by Odhams, probably before WW2. Odhams produced lots of technical books similar to this, usually containing just enough information to not be helpful

Very nice colors on that bird now. I really love the shades of the green and mauve. It's looking great with the light wooden tone of the fuselage.
Best regards

Thanks Amigo! I have done the touch up at the wing roots. Now just a bit to touch up on the undersurface of the tail plane roots and on to decaling.

Really like the mauve. Is it a home made mix?

I'm glad you used a sky blue underside, because I have just done the same on my Alby. If I'm wrong than at least im not wrong alone ;-)

Would you say the Roden D.III is within the abilities of a relative beginner such as myself?

Thanks for looking in and commenting! The Mauve/ Lilac is a mix of an Old Polyscale WW1 German Lilac and a bit of blue added. As for building the kit remember it is not a WNW kit. That being said I think with patience and a lot of test fitting(Interior parts), it is within any modelers reach. One thing I am concerned about is mounting the upper wing. I have gotten used to WNW very positive strut locations and looking at the Roden struts I don't know how I managed my first DIII  ::)

The lacquered plywood combined with the markings really looks sharp!

That's looking great! I had the idea with the left-over ribtapes, too, but I'd thought about using a riveting tool or saw on the back to give a bit of stitching impression. I still have to try that, though, not sure how practical that would be. Thinking it up is easy, but actually doing it that way does sound like dull work...! :)

That wood finish looks even more realistic as a background for the other markings. This is going to be one teriffic model when it is finished Rick.

Thanks for the compliments! I actually used a Pounce wheel on my SE5a from Roden to simulate the stitching. It worked well but I found these tapes to be a bit thin/ width wise to try  ::) I will try to find photos of the old SE build to post as an example.

I have made a bit of progress on the Jasta 11 DV. I used Bobs Strippers to pre shade the wing tapes and then applied the lower surface Cookie Cutter Lozenge from Aviattic. These are the Best Fitting of the Cookie Cutters to date... They get Better and Better! I also did some interior work. A few touch ups and the controls still need to be done.

Thanks Steve. Your comment is greatly appreciated. A VERY SMALL update. I did a wash and used some white glue and white paint to simulate the plugs. The Macro Photos show me some things I need to fix and touch up.

That motor looks great.  I love the exposed motors of WWI.  Just a great detail-heavy feature that doesn't have to be covered up.

Thanks Gaz. I hate to say this but the engine covers will be in place on the DV...I really like the lines with everything buttoned up  8)
Here is the latest:
Aviattic Lozenge applied to the tail surfaces which will eventually be overpainted in red. The two Albatri together and the engine glued in place in the DV.

My sentence probably wasn't very clear upon rereading.  What I meant was I like that on almost all WWI aircraft you have some portion of the engine sticking out.  It's just very interesting.

A very nice couple Rick! It is interesting to see both fuselages next to each other. I never really got why they called the D V a “lighter” version of the D III. But now it’s quite obvious. Although the D V weighted quite the same like the D III, the D V actually looks much sleeker.
Best regards
Andreas

I like it Rick.  Taking a big chance on overpainting the lozenge but; you pulled it off and it looks the part alright.  I too like the sleek lines of the Albatri and the engine area buttoned up, makes the aircraft look complete, there's enough sticking out to detail to add that bit of interest to the front end.  The wood affect on the DIII is outstanding and, gotta love that Aviattic Lozenge, nice stuff.  Looking forward to the next update.

The finish that you are achieving on this model is simply georgeous Rick. All that masking would drive me around the bend, never mind that I have never been able to master the dark arts of the airbrush....

I'm quiteinterested in watching how you deal with the exposed wooden areas of the fuselage. My Albi rear fuselage continues to stumble to completion and a lesson or two from your project will be very valuable.  ;D

Beautiful paintwork, especially (as has been noted by several visitors) your over-painted lozenge fabric. A very nice touch, very nicely executed!  8)

Great looking model Rick.  I am also interested in how you are going to do the bare wood sections.  I would have had to paint the bare wood first and then mask it to paint the markings.  Otherwise, I would end up with a ridge of oil paint next to the markings when the masking tape was pulled off.

Thanks for all of the positive feedback Guys! As for the wood painting it worked out well doing the bands first on the DIII so I am hopeful I will get equally as good results on the DV. The tan base coat evens out the edge left by the bands. I use the oils sparingly so no build up should occur...I Hope!

Still awesome what you are doing! I personally would have painted the whole fuselage in wood colors and oils or wood decals and would have added the yellow and red bands afterwards (and possibly ruined the wooden finish with masking tape...). I have to give your method a try!

Thanks Andreas. I used to do things exactly as you said right up to and including lifting the wood finish with tape. So I experimented with the bands on the DIII and it worked well enough to do the same on the DV.

I received my order from Proper plane today of an Axial Prop and REXx exhaust for my Albatros DV.

I also have attached the Machine Guns and some other bits and pieces to both the DV and DIII OAW. Photos of the latter this weekend.

I don't mind the black.  But in a hobby where more light is desired to see stuff, I can see their point.  Nice looking birds, both.

I'm curious, is it a trick of the light, or has the fuselage of of the D.III a little sunken behind the number 19 on the starboard side?

Keep up the great work!

Thanks Gaz I appreciate the comments and feedback on the background. No sink in the fuselage that I can see. If there was I wouldn't be too worried as these birds had a lot of wavy stressed skin after a period of use  ::)

Thanks Gary although I don't think I qualify as an Expert  :o One heads up on the WNW kit. I have found that trimming the upper portion of the lower wing where it inserts into the fuselage helps prevent banana wing. Just a tad will do. I also slightly, very slightly, bend the tab. Works for me but check your fit before following any crazy advice from me  8)

"I have found that trimming the upper portion of the lower wing where it inserts into the fuselage helps prevent banana wing. Just a tad will do.
Can you be more specific on where to trim, what I think you mean is the top surface above the tab where it joins the fuselage........??   but I want to be sure.

That is exactly where I mean Lance. Way back when Bo was working on his DV Banana Struts and Banana wings were discussed. I have seen some gorgeous builds of the WNW Albatros that have the tips bending upwards instead of a proper dihedral beginning at the root. I really take it EASY and do just a bit at a time. On my last I didn't actually glue the lower wing at the root until I had the upper aligned and everything looked good. As the saying goes, Your Madness May Vary  ::)

Just to be clear this was suggested by another Modeler Long Ago. I think it was actually before or during my first WNW Albatros build. Funny thing  is not all of the gorgeous builds of this kit have the banana tips and the builders didn't mention any sanding  ::) Thus MY suggestion to test fit and be careful not to overdo !

Thanks for the banana bend tip.  Another thing to worry about...

Don't put any worry in this Gaz. Even the few that I have seen that are slightly bent up at the tips look great. If you do trim be careful and make sure it is just a few swipes with sandpaper and or a quick scrape with an exacto. Probably even more important is do not have any paint on the surfaces that go into the wing slot!

Funny thing Gary is that I had forgotten about the slightly warped upper wing. Looking at the wing in my current build I see no evidence of the issue. This started as an OAW version and I used parts for the DV kindly supplied by another Forum Member. Perhaps WNW fixed the slight warp on the OAW issue?

Not sure, Rick. Mine is the standard "Albatros DV," kit #32009, purchased about 6-8 years ago. It certainly had the up-swept wingtips, perhaps 1/8" (or maybe a bit more) at either tip. I used elastics to bind the wing to a flat bit of lumber, then ran boiling water across the centre section and immediately submerged the wing into cold water. It took about three repetitions, but the wing is now dead flat and otherwise unharmed.   8)

I wonder if fixing the tip upsweep would negate the need for modifying the lower wing as I have done? Just double checked and to my eye there is no upsweep on the upper wing tips. I remember my original DV had a Decided Warp on the sprue and took quite a bit of finger pressure to straighten.

I have no idea, but you can bet that I'll hoist that little question aboard for use when comes time to fit the wings. Thanks for the insight!  ;)

So, spent my vacation working on my current 3 builds. The DIII was used to experiment with Tamiya smoke and clear Orange. Learned that when you think you don't have enough it is time to quit  :o The DV has had the spinner, pirated from a Roden DIII, and Proper Plane Prop added. Also gloss coated over all of the decals prior to some Oil Dot weathering on the Lozenge and some planned to be subtle stains using oils. I also worked on the Axial prop for the DIII using pencils.

As always you are making wonderful planes...
I like _so_ much the "satin" shade on the dark red elements on the jasta 11 machine.
Is it due to a varnish or it's the natural finish of the color you used?

Thanks for the comment Antonio. The satin finish is simply one light coat of Future Floor Polish. Glossier than it looks probably.

Sorry Rick but I am catching up again - life keeps getting in the way at the moment!

Super updates - a wonderful pair of Albatri in the making here. The wood finish on the fuselage is just stunning....

I have progressed on the DV although it will take a sharp eye to notice  ::) I have sprayed the red and yellow areas and the wings with Tamiya flat. I have also done some weathering with oils on the fuselage and an oil dot technique on the wings.

RAG III,
I'm "chomping at the bit" to get back to work on something. Seeing the great work you've done is making it worse.
Perhaps in a couple of months after my move. In the meantime I'll enjoy watching your great builds.

Thanks Gaz. The Flat finish was applied in a thin coat more to give a slight difference between the wood areas and the painted areas. It is subtle but I know there is a difference  8)

You're gonna have to tell me just how you plan to get those 4 leads from the fuselage into the upper wing.  Looks like a difficult operation on my D.V.

Thanks Gaz! About those leads, I am thinking I may end up doing the same as my first DV...snip off the lines and run sprue from the top. The PE panel is not glued on the upper surface so I can bend it up either to run the lines through as planned or run the sprue down if needed  :-X

That is a great idea!  Kinda makes rigging the inside a bit redundant, though.  Still easier than trying to measure the correct depth and hope that all four will stick up in there the way you want.

Paint the cockpit leather pad, Paint the Tailskid, Touch up a myriad of glitches, add the windscreen, add the small pipe to Bos radiator, add the water pipe, do the control surface rigging, add the under wing crosses, etc.

Going on that theme Bo and Bertl are the Gods. Yourself and some others are Demi Gods, I am certainly in the Mere Mortal category  ;D That being said I forgot to comment on your inspiration to do an Albie in 1/32nd. Go for it.
