Title: RAF SE5a (1/72, Roden)
Post by: PrzemoL on October 01, 2012, 05:28:13 AM
Here it is, after a rather longish build the long expected roll-out - the James McCudden's famous SE5a B4891 from early 1918 at Baizieux. He shot down 32 enemy planes flying this machine, what makes it the most successful SE5a airframe.

A lovely build as expected from you PrzemoL!  ;D  I can now see the very, very subtle shading on the roundel on the upper wing. (I'm referring to my question in the last post I made on your build thread.)

- Are you using a very diluted grey or tan/brown to do this shading on the upper wing?

- What material did you use for the streamer?  It looks great.

Thanks, Warren once again!
The shading mix is indeed very much diluted, the brighter the background, the more diluted it has to be. I am using the proportions of clear to black (or brown for CDL shading) from the range 20:1 - 10:1 (more or less). I prefer such dilution because I prefer to pass with spraying several times (2-6) to better control the degree of shading.
The streamer is made of kitchen aluminium foil.

Absolutely stunning, Prez.  One of the finest SE's I've ver seen in any scale.
Cheers,
Bud

Thanks for your reply to my questions PrzemoL!  Yes, 'tis better to make 2 or 3 extra passes than to make one that is too dark and can't be undone. Ouch!  :'(

Prz your 1/72nd stuff is just as stunning as the larger scale stuff you've built!!
It's hard to tell the difference, stunning work mate!

Thanks, Sean, Chris and Bob.
But, Sean, your comment indicates, rightly so, that I have to work on some improvements to my 32nd scalers...

No improvements at all mate simply saying that its hard to tell the difference between your 72nd scale and 32nd scale stuff it's all brilliant to my eyes!!! :) your work has been a major influence to me!

You are far too kind, Sean. I know my limitations, especially in 32nd scale which is still very new for me.

That is one brilliant build of an SE5a in small scale.
