Title: CSM 1:48 FK.8 Mid Version
Post by: Des on June 16, 2017, 07:12:12 PM
I have decided to have a crack at the new Copper State Models 1:48 scale injection moulded FK.8 mid version. A full build log of this kit can be found on my website but i will post as much as possible here on the forum as well.
The kit gives a choice of a resin engine or a plastic engine. I opted for the plastic engine even though the resin engine is quite nice. The engine went together very well, the first thing I did was to open up the gap between the cylinders, I did this with a razor saw, it was quite an easy exercise and gives a much beter appearance. The first two images show three of the cylinders having been cut away, I ran a piece of wet and dry paper between the cut cylinders to give a smooth finish.

The rocker arms are supplied as a solid lump of plastic so to make them look a little more like the real thing I hollowed them out ginving them a nice 3D appearance. I firstly drilled several holes through the bottom of the rocker arms then removed the excess plastic using a fine jewellers file. I also added the two magnets to the front of the engine, I drilled six 0.3mm holes into the front of each magneto to take the ignition leads. I also fitted the kit supplied plumbing which fits on top of the cylinders.

I spayed the cylinders using the copper MRP paint, this paint sprays beautifully but does require at least three coats to obtain a good coverage. The rocker arms were brush painted with Mr Metal Color Stainless and lightly buffed once dry. The crank caes were brush painted with Mr Metal Color Chrome Silver, this was also lightly buffed once dry.

These next photos show one side of the engine nearly completed, I added a lot of extra plumbing using 0.24 brass wire, the throttle cables were made from 0.12 copper wire painted with Mr Metal Color Dark Iron. The ignition leads were made from 0.09mm copper wire and once fitted were painted with Humbrol No.94.

This next picture shows the engine sitting on the instruction booklet, the comparison between the instructions and the built engine show the amount of extra detail I have added, a bit time consuming but well worth the effort. Please bear in mind that my preferred scale is 1:32 so building this 1:48 scale engine is way out of my comfort zone, also, due to my wife being ill I have not built a model for 9 months so I am a little rusty.

What a great start! And in my beloved scale too :)
The engine looks fantastic! But the MRP copper looks a bit bright on some pictures, thie is may be only due to light?

Good luck,
Frank

I finished detailing the engine by adding the ignition leads and more plumbing, there is probably more that could be added but due to the small size I have decided to leave well enough alone. Here are a series of photos showing the completed engine, remember that this engine is the plastic one supplied with the kit, I did not use the metal exhaust either, I feel the plastic engine is every bit as good as the resin engine.

Blimy Des if this is rusty work what do you expect to achieve win you are well oiled? Fantastic to see you modelling again - even if you do feel outside of your comfort zone. I would feel very comfortable indeed if my models were only half as good as tis.

Best wishes to your wife for a rapid recovery.

Thanks guys for all your very kind comments, and thank you for your concerns regarding my wife, she is nearly back to her normal self so that takes a lot of pressure off me.

I have started preparing the fuselage bits and pieces for painting, I also made the two PE ammo boxes which proved to be a bit fidly. While at this stage I thought I would trial fit the engine and guess what, it fits, I was a bit worried that all the extra plumbing I fitted would interfer with the mounting. There were some ejector pin marks inside the fuselage halves that needed filling before painting.

Looks incredible in situ Des...

The PE may be fiddly, but you've nailed it. What do you use for glue for that?

Guy
Title: Re: CSM 1:48 FK.8 Mid Version
Post by: Des on June 23, 2017, 05:15:21 PM
Thanks Guy, your comments are much appreciated. I use thin (runny) super glue for all the PE, it holds extremely well, only the smallest amount is needed.

Des.
Title: Re: CSM 1:48 FK.8 Mid Version
Post by: Gisbod on June 23, 2017, 07:43:26 PM
Ah ok, and how is it applied? I find it tricky to use!
Title: Re: CSM 1:48 FK.8 Mid Version
Post by: Des on June 23, 2017, 10:05:13 PM
I have always applied the CA the same way, I use a length of 0.12mm copper wire, dipping the end of the wire into a small drop of CA will supply enough for most PE jobs, the wire will pick up a very small amount which in turn can be transferred to the PE, if more is required simply dip the wire into the drop of CA again. Bear in mind that CA 'goes off' fairly quickly so a new small drop will be needed in less than one minute, fresh CA is important if you wish to maintain it's viscosity and its adhering properties. To pick up a larger amount of CA for larger sizes of PE bend the end of the wire into a small loop, doing this will allow more CA to 'stick' to the wire. Runny CA has the ability to run into small spaces or along the part being glued using capillary action. As with nearly all super glues, drying time is extremely fast, a retarder can be used to slow it down a bit but I have never found the need to use it. Don't forget, if glue is applied to a painted surface there is a strong possibility that the paint will be pulled off taking the PE with it, so remove any paint before gluing. What I have written here are my techniques, everyone is different so please do what you feel comfortable with.

I have started to assemble the internals of the fuselage, fuselage sides have been painted with CDL (MRP) while the timber bits are painted with Humbrol enamels. I trial fitted the top fuselage cowling and placed the engine in position to see if everything fitted. The two fuselage halves fitted very well but all traces of paint have to be removed from all parts where they mate with the fuselage, tolerances are very tight.

Very pretty Des!

I guess, as with Wingnuts, everything these days is computer controlled design and so is the manufacturing process- so there's basically no error! (until I get my hands on it of course!)

Looking forward to see how you rig it in this scale Des - something that generally steers me clear of smaller scale...

Well....

assuming the designer driving the CAD system didn't make any mistakes, had the right info, made the correct compromises in creating a kit from the drawings of a full sized aeroplane

And then assuming that the design can actually be made, can be made without distorting in the process, can be made consistently, doesn't get damaged in handling

Apart from that, no errors

Thanks very much for looking in and leaving kind comments, they are much appreciated.

This photo shows the bottom wings just sitting in place, the locating lugs for the wings are superb and hold the wing very firmly.

I completed the instrument panel by painting as per the instructions then applying the decals. The decals for this panel are absolutely brilliant, even though very tiny they were easy to apply and pulled down beautifully, the graphics on these decals are second to none.

I have fitted the instrument panel to the cockpit coaming and glued the coaming to the fuselage, everything was a perfect fit and only needed a few strips of Tamiya tape to hold it in place while the glue dried.

I have added the rigging to the front end of the fuselage, I used 0.12mm Modelkasten elastic thread, a brilliant product. I drilled small holes through the fuselage frames then inserted the thread securing it with CA. The third photo shows the rigging on both sides, the bottom and in front of the firewall. Once all the rigging was fitted I painted them with Mr Metal Color Stainless.

That is looking super sweet Des. I have started me early version this weekend. One question which I can't see from your photos. Did you notch the side wall inner framing to allow the wire from the trim wheel to pass thru or just stick the frame on top. I notched mine yesterday but it was tedious work. Then it looks like you didn't have to so I may have made it unesssarily complex.

I have started forming the nose of the model and to date this is the most difficult and time consuming part of the build, I reinforced the fold line by adding a length of lead wire CA'd to both sides, the small tabs which are part of the PE nose section break off very easily.

All the different sections of cowl fit together fairly well and really need to be glued to give the proper look. I was thinking of leaving all the cowls off to display my engine but it didn't look right with no cowls at all.

Shame to hide it, but the cowlings do look great.

Very tricky though!

Agree wholeheartedly, too bad the engine has to be hidden.

I fitted the undercarriage to the fuselage, it was quite easy to fit and had good location pins, once the glue was dry it ended up as a srong assembly. I also fitted the fore and aft cabane struts, these went on very easily.

A sprayed some MRP PC10 onto the undercarriage and the cabane struts, I also painted and fitted the radiators.

I have sprayed the underside with Gunze Off White which looks very much like CDL. I have also sprayed the top of the wings, tail and fuselage. For this I mixed up my own interpretation of late PC10, I used Gunze H423 RLM83 Dark Green and kept adding small quantities of Gunze H421 RLM81 Brown Violet until I reached the desired colour, ironically it ended up being virtually identical to MRP-253 PC10 late WW1 RAF. The most time consuming part of this process is all the masking that was required, plus doing the PC10 wrap around on the wings and tail. Gunze acrylics spay extremely well and dry in two hours, I thin my Gunze acrylic paints with lacquer thinners.

I'm now tempted by this kit but my current backlog says hang on a minute mate...

The painting is great, I will follow your next steps and hope to learn something about weathering of that dark green.

Thanks guys for all your wonderful comments, they are much appreciated.

I fitted the windscreen, the Aldis sight and the observers machine gun, the tail skid is also fitted. Decals have been applied to both sides of the fuselage, the tail and under the bottom wing, the bomb racks are also fited. The entire model still needs a coat of satin clear but this won't happen until the decals have cured.

I really like how you build models.
I would call your style, the Admiralty Method, if this name is suitable for aviation. Everything is accurate, clean and very wonderful.

Just a small update this time, I painted and fitted the bombs to the bomb racks under the bottom wings, the bombs are painted with Humbrol No.7 full gloss Ligh Buff.
There is no colour call-out in the instructions for the bombs. The entire model has now been sprayed with a coat of satin clear, this was done before the gloss finish bombs were fitted.

The wheels are now fitted, they were painted white then the red decal applied, the back of the wheels are painted PC10. I have also fitted the struts and the rigging brackets to the bottom wing, getting close now to fitting the top wing then the rigging. The prop has been painted with oils and is still going through the drying process.

Why do you ask Edgar, is there a problem fitting the top wing  ??? ??? ???

I did a quick trial fit and there does not appear to be any issues, I am building this model the same way I build all of my models, it may be different to the way other modelers work but I have always had great success with my technique.

just cranking this badboy out huh des. looks very nice. and i like how you are branching sometimes to 1/48 which gains you access to different types that could possibly never be done in 1/32. not that you couldnt just crank anything you want out of evergreen and brass but i know its nice to build a cool kit sometimes.

Thanks guys for all your wonderful comments, they are much appreciated.

The CSM FK.8 is now done and dusted, the rigging was quite complex and took a little longer than expected, all in all the rigging went very well despite the small gap between the wings. I ended up using just about all of the PE that was supplied with the kit, overall it is an excellent kit which makes up to be a very nice looking model, a full build log can be found on my website.
