Title: Fokker E.V, Eduard 1/48
Post by: Bughunter on May 27, 2017, 02:02:49 AM
One year ago I finished a Fokker E.V in 1/48. Again a Eduard Profipack, with added Small Stuff rotary engine, fabric seatbelts, Gaspatch turnbuckles and Master Spandau 08/15.
The painting was done with Gunze, Alclad and oils. A friend helped here with information about the wing colors.
Small airplane from a great kit!

Have fun,
Frank

Since the wooden air screws creates so much interest and I think this is my best AXIAL one, some pictures for that too.

This Fokker was used a "air screw template", because it shows 3 different kinds of wood

So I used pear, boxwood and "black cherry". Unpainted front:

The next two shows the final air screw, the difference is just the angle and light:

Another absolutely fantastic model. The propellor is a mini-masterpiece on its own - utterly convincing. Brilliant.

Very nice. The propeller is exquisite. I've tried laminated wood props but have never managed to get the two blades to look the same. I like your interpretation of the mult-colour streaking. I could never buy the notion of a two tone bottom of the wing.

Another absolute gem! I'd like to learn more concerning your logic on the wing colours; I'm presently building a 1:32 Scale (Mikr Mir) E.V / D.VIII Kit and want to learn more about the subject as that stage gets closer. Your reasoning for one colour on the bottom surface makes a lot of sense!
Cheers,
Lance

Yes - a totally brilliant build - very well done! Yes the wing color choice is a difficult one but I like this take on it.

Your feedback makes me speechless! Thank you very much!

and
I'd like to learn more concerning your logic on the wing colours
At first thanks for asking, I was hoping not to torned to pieces due to that coloring ::)

I started with the usual green/brown on upper side, the freshly painted wing:
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/wbUhoVjrDp3l_uU4jd9CWCYHHRtkg7zBf13r--Y2m3cTtoebgcs3w67QrZDxVR2TC-_cXa7tLaPnXfoyiipE25ekJGF1Ql6riiEd0h7OjzHTue3UyfO46PrKuKaDze2s2yfrh0YVS1f0Kir3W_uHZAjpRYlklLtIE5NSE7L1jgab7n8ApXNsHAVyp6nWdLfzG97BruE--NT_qhJDvmjCs84lJtCYUCgkN2giW8zTaHKlgIfCcDDFZ4X93u90fE02Q07sFtodt3YcnG-J45nxshDDmytk3JZsbLmPfL3GgFX8GczSikP7X0eo1DhWW0-arqDReGu2399VOHPdlO87NCJCavFrlzq3sep2q5YKVlXz64o0r8rPGjFJI8YrEMW2xdM_RQWjCtdByYnrhf8m4QUoePzByhG4tYlS2WhpibOCiznZ-FZjxYlF5aiI66v1alITvDxKwUZ1_6leh1_PPoeRYI2K4gtFIrsyxpggELiTmIZOf_awPGfXFVZxcTxut_FkrEsSnPCu0OEMIUBBEIGEIqIrU77JrcZQ3Sp9rA2_FiS06AIafvBSaF7V5teUINEQB0dZrFgL57iJmITheUs7iRrpLLY36b97l5kQVKViWeN5hdXD=w800-h308-no)

The oils were not yet dry and a friend comes around the corner with a different theory:
- there is the known Fokker parts list with wood stains: brown, green, violet and blue
=> the known upper side green/brown, below violet and blue
But does it really make sense? Unusual. And brown/green was not allowed due to likelihood of confusion with french aircrafts.
We know the e.g. Albatros schemes of that time with green/violett on upperside, blue below. Can be used here too.
The remaining question is: what about the brown wood stain from the parts list?
But who tells us, that the brown has to be on outside? I was told, that a wood stain improves the resistance against water, so it makes sense to use the brown inside of the wing. Fokker has trouble with condensed water in the wooden wings (which caused delamination and the stop of the D.VIII program due to crashes). So any additional protection is good.

I found that theory so consistent, that I removed the not-yet-dry green and brown oils immediately and started again with green and violet.

Cheers,
Frank

Hi Frank,
I'd like to reiterate all the complimentary comments re your stunning EV/DVIII. The colour combination and the subtle panel lines on the wing are particularly impressive.

My own feeble example ('You too can have a Fokker EV') in the 'Under Construction' section in which I showed how a Fokker DVI can be converted to an EV, has stalled due to the Miko-Mir release.

I along with many others here seem to crave a definitive answer to the wing camouflage  of these aircraft. Your logic re the green/purple is just as compelling as the received wisdom of the green/brown on the top surface, Also, I can agree with the idea that the underside was one colour. After all, no other German aircraft had wings painted in two colours underneath, so why do it on this one, so late in the war?

I'm sure that a debate on this subject is long overdue!

Thank you Mark and Dave!

how good a kit is it?
This was one of my first WWI kits some years ago and I think it is a great kit. After some years of unavailability it was re-released recently.

Be careful with the wings: there are two in the kit. Many people have wondered about this, but it is explained in the introductory text of the manual. But what modeller reads manuals? ;D
One wing has the slightly wavy texture of wood that has become damp, the other wing is factory new.

Cheers,
Frank
