Whenever I get bogged down or get saturated with my WWI Aircraft Modelling Hobby I take a break and try something a little different. I was long overdue for a break from the era of wood and wire and decided a brief foray into the "Yellow Wings" period of American Military Aviation would be a nice change. I had picked up an old Hasegawa Kit of the US Navy Boeing F4B4 and the Squadron "In Action" book on it at a Model Show a few years back and decided to give it a try.
I used the Lone Star Models resin cockpit (not great) and the Yellow Wings Decals (highly recommended) on the Build and, despite my intentions to keep it simple, spent the better part of 6 weeks of bench time on the model. Rigging is steel wire and some guitar wire for the tail and control cables.
I'll say one thing, she sure looks bright and shiny along side my weathered and beaten WWI models! An enjoyable Build and I'll be keeping my eyes open for a P-26 or Helldiver in 1:32 in future!
Here's a few photos:

Well done Lance, what a great looking model, I have always had a soft spot for the "Yellow Wings" but have never got around to building one, your fantastic model has inspired me to purchase one, or two

Nice clean finish Lance, you should be proud as it looks great! Thanks for sharing with us

Thanks Des, I too have wanted to do one for years. I did a few of the old Aurora ones in 1:48 in my much younger years, but the Hasegawa Series always appealed a great deal.
Thank you as well Jamo, the clean finish of these birds always amazes me, the photos from that era show them mostly in absolutely pristine and "showroom" condition.

Beautiful model Lance!
Your paint work looks great, very well applied. Your steel wire wing rigging looks excellent too, are they flat?
They look so on my monitor.
You can't have just one shiny model on the shelf so I agree,
bring on the Peashooter! ;D
cheers

Wow Lance she really is a treat. Bright, shiny and so beautifully finished - one to be proud of for sure.
I had this kit (and same book) for some time but parted with it a while back - you've made me see that that was a big mistake.
Congratulations on a truly superb result

Beauty Lance, I love these yellow wing planes and yours is really outstanding.

Nice work Lance. USS Ranger, out of North Island, San Diego, 1935 or so?
Mike West did an F-11 Goshawk conversion for the Hase Bf2c-1 which is pretty nice. I got a Hase kit for 10.00 so that balanced the cost of the resin.

Beautiful work, Lance. I just love the finish that you have achieved.
Best wishes

Great build. The Rigging looks superb and the paintjob looks awsome, too.
Just wow!

Ooh very nice Lance!

Suh-weeet! :)

Thanks very much, Guys, I truly appreciate your comments!
Boggie - The steel wire is round, I can't recall exactly where I got it it years ago but I think it was in the paper flower supplies in an Arts & Crafts shop!
Mike - Yes, Ranger in the Pacific, 34-35.
The Kit goes together very well for it's age but I must add that the plastic is akin to cast iron. hard as stone and very brittle compared to most of the Kits of today.

What a beautiful bird Lance! You've done a wonderful job with this kit and produced a stunning model. Very inspiring for us to take a peek at this later era of flight.
Best regards,

Eyecatching would be an understatement - Excellent diversion, Lance. Well done!

Glad to see that you stayed with a real aeroplane Lance, i.e. it has an engine (not a hole), a fan and and a spare wing! Beautifully fished too - those yellow winged craft were certainly eye catching.

Lance,
Stunning project my old friend. Absolutely love her paint work too. Congratulations and well done. I have the same kit and accessories you used plus the Vector resin replacement for her engine. Which is amazing in detail as well as an outstanding improvement over the kit supplied engine.

That is a beautiful model, well done.

Terri, Greg and Ken,
Thanks! Greg, I never thought of the Vector engine, the kit one did require quite a bit of sanding down of the lifter assemblies to allow the ring cowl to fit around it.
Cheers,
Lance

Lance, My apologies for not commenting sooner! I love what you have done with this colorful bird! As always your finish is incredible. You are a Master no matter the era!

Very nice Lance! Love those yellow birds.

Very Nice lance, Likewise I have done a few of these . As easily seen , despite their age (done in the mid-late 70's) they build up nicely !

Thanks Rick, Marc and Ed. As I mentioned before you can't beat the colours of this era, let alone the designs. They are all pretty easy on the eyes, and Hasegawa did a very good job on the Kits for "back then"!

Lance
