Title: WNWs Ship's Camel
Post by: Gisbod on April 28, 2017, 09:59:34 PM
Time for another build along  ;)

Wingnut's Ship's Camel:

(http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/ac29/Gisbod/Camel/82E8AE41-046C-43F2-825B-475B1D6499BD.jpg) (http://s882.photobucket.com/user/Gisbod/media/Camel/82E8AE41-046C-43F2-825B-475B1D6499BD.jpg.html)

I was inspired by this photo of a Camel of HMS Calliope:

(http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/ac29/Gisbod/Camel/EE60FBBA-6495-49A2-A22B-0CB5DF90EE01.jpg) (http://s882.photobucket.com/user/Gisbod/media/Camel/EE60FBBA-6495-49A2-A22B-0CB5DF90EE01.jpg.html)

Not the whole scene! Perhaps just the platform to give an impression of the rest. I don't usually do dioramas - but thought this could be simple but effective base...

I've made a start on the Bentley and I've got in a Tommy's War figure (TW32010) - again, figure painting certainly isn't my forte but I'll give it a bash...

Thanks for looking in.

Thanks for the interest.

Finished the interior and just closed the fuselage. Another super kit from Wingnuts. Having recently made the Brisfit, it seems a nice simple build!

I've used another Barracuda wicker seat, but stuck with the kit seat belts.

Thanks again,

All coming along nicely - also really great to have a simple, small scout on the bench.

Main components all primed up - Using Tamiya fine grey out of a rattle can - beautiful stuff to spray.

(http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/ac29/Gisbod/Camel/098BAB32-C1CA-4D4B-BB0F-A07D5F490C72.jpg) (http://s882.photobucket.com/user/Gisbod/media/Camel/098BAB32-C1CA-4D4B-BB0F-A07D5F490C72.jpg.html)

PC10 and linen up next - I've got in specially these paints:

(http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/ac29/Gisbod/Camel/1CEC9C11-1CB0-4EF8-964A-9A90F049F1F2.jpg) (http://s882.photobucket.com/user/Gisbod/media/Camel/1CEC9C11-1CB0-4EF8-964A-9A90F049F1F2.jpg.html)

They look nice in the bottles - I was thinking I could add some variation to the PC10 by using a little linen - haven't quite decided which kind of look yet.. will probably look through others models for some inspiration. Can anyone post or link me to a particularly nice PC10 finish?

Thanks

Guy

Well I can report that the paints are Beautiful! Nicest I've ever used.. it's like spraying liquid silk. I seriously want to get a complete set of these. Good coverage, dry quickly (but not in the airbrush) and all straight out of the bottle, they have a lovely consistency   :D Ace

Here's the first light shade (PC10 with about 33% linen) for the highlighted ribs:

(http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/ac29/Gisbod/Camel/1907A495-BE90-41A5-85DB-C22C2F2C8AD3.jpg) (http://s882.photobucket.com/user/Gisbod/media/Camel/1907A495-BE90-41A5-85DB-C22C2F2C8AD3.jpg.html)

Then a patchy overspray of neat PC10

(http://i882.photobucket.com/albums/ac29/Gisbod/Camel/EE658F4A-AD9C-4D69-8F4A-193963FA3BFA.jpg) (http://s882.photobucket.com/user/Gisbod/media/Camel/EE658F4A-AD9C-4D69-8F4A-193963FA3BFA.jpg.html)

There's a hint of chocolate in there somewhere too. The finish is so silky smooth you could decal up directly I reckon.

As they're effectively Mr Color based - their brand cleaner worked a treat.

Post by: Gisbod on May 11, 2017, 11:20:34 PM
I think it's generally around 17psi Bob,

To be honest though.. I have an adjustable knob at the base of the airbrush and just set that by experimentation.

The paints are so fine that they'd spray at very low settings I think.

Thanks chaps,

So all glossed up and decals in place, have you ever seen such a shiny Sopwith?

I must admit I've had more than my fair share of mini disasters on this build - ranging from glue blobs to fingerprints to solvent cleaner splashes to decal mishaps - none of it anything to do with the kit though, which is an absolute gem.

One day I'll get through a kit error free...

Overspray filter of 'Streaking Grime', some oil lowlights and painted highlights and sealed in with Alclad Light sheen...

Apologies for the late reply, yes, laquer based - beautiful, smooth, soft sheen!

Not much done, I've been away and had more 'issues'. The control horns that aren't one piece i.e. one for the top and one for the bottom I find very tricky, as the tension on the rigging inevitably seems to pull them out of place - so after much fafffing (English term for messing about...) I have finally rigged the tail section - I also had to scratch the couple of  forward fuselage control horns as I messed up the kit pieces trying to drill through the teeny plastic. For such a simple model I seem to be making it hard going!

But looks ok in the end...

Thanks,

Little more done. Seems to be going slowly...

Not my usual method of rigging (Bob's Buckles) as it didn't have turnbuckles as such - so I've drilled through the wings and struts at certain strategic points and will be pulling the monofilament through with a spot of CA. Hope it works!

I'm using a slightly thicker line than usual - 0.17mm - slightly overscale but it looks better for some reason (to me anyway).

Top wing next!

Really looking great - in the home stretch!

For my part I am using very short "buckles" for the rigging on my Camel - I rationalize it as though it did not have turnbuckles there was at least the "terminal" on each end of the RAF wire to tighten etc. - your solution is probably a better one for an accurate look though....

It looks fantastic to me - congrats on getting it wrapped up!

Question - regarding the PC10 edging onto the undersurface of the wings and tail plane - is it now thought that edging on the Camel did not go around the entire wing, just the front edge to the ailerons? I was about to mask my Camel build off with edging around the entire wing (and horizontal tail surface) but maybe that the wrong way to go?

May I ask what paints you used to get that finish on the front cowling / engine cowlings?

Thank you for the moral support, but it's only because you can't see it close up  ;D

Yes, the cowling was one of the more successful parts.. it's sprayed with Alclad and polished up with Uschi's metal polishing powders - Chrome. A nice product that requires a few layers - then you gradually see the sheen build up - it looks very metallic to me!

Guy if you bin something as good looking as that Camel I'll give up model making!  :'( Please assure us that you'll keep it because I'm still enjoying making a really big mess of my Snipe...

simple solution: stand back ;)

no offense, Guy, but i doubt anyone else would notice what pains you even from close up. i believe i know how you feel... i studied art at university and the thing that made my life hard was that to me, everything i saw in *my* painting was a decision that could have gone another (and probably better) way, whereas other people's paintings just looked finished and i trusted that everything they did was intentional.

you've got high standards, and the same thing that makes you strive to improve makes it hard to enjoy the finished result of your work.

PS not that you should ever care what i think but i don't do attaboys that often and i'd be delighted to build something that looks half as good.

I think that Jeff has summed things p very well Guy. If I binned every model that I was not happy with for one reason or another I would not have any models. My personal opinion of yours is that I just wish that I could get a metallic finish somewhere nearly as good as yours, and a general paint finish too - especially the sheen on the PC10.

Many congratulations on a superb, first class build - and I am not flattering you, just writing the truth.

Stephen.

Thank you all,

What nice chaps you are. I'm not saying it to get people's praise - it's just me and models at the moment! I do enjoy making but for some reason have no interest in the finished product... I have nothing on display at all. Maybe I should have a bash at 1/48th and get a collection going with a view to having them in a display cabinet somewhere...

Or maybe I should just see a shrink?  ;D

Hi Guy
I'm not really interested in the end product either. I make models as a way of meditation through the making. Even though I have banjaxed my Snipe three ways sideways I don't care a toss. I'll finish it, put it on a shelf somewhere to collect dust and make another plane. Still I'll like my Snipe for the memories of its making and all the lessons learned from its failings. The next one - whatever it is - will be better - more meditation and less fails. Again and again.

Been telling my shrink that for 40 years...yeah, nah. Save your money man!!!

Cheers
A

Thanks, I'll keep an eye open for some Uschi's.
I love the effect you've achieved.

Thank you A & Martin,

I've pressed on (mainly because the base was the whole inspiration for the build in the first place). So far I'm actually really pleased! The wood planking has turned out better than I'd hoped.. I'm almost tempted to start again with a new Camel!  ;D

Excellent work with your timber platform Guy, the Camel will look great sitting on the base.

Des, Rick, Juan, Jouette - thanks  ;)

I'm actually really enjoying making the base - its restored my Mojo to a degree!

Just wish I'd made more effort on the main kit now. It was a lazy build..

Shouldn't be much longer now (although if I do the figure, that may take me a while...)

Guy, the plane is beautifully made and I keep watching at the pictures enjoying them more and more...
I am sure the base will add value to the bird.
