Hi guy's,
it's bin a long time since i tackled a W.W.1 related subject, so i tought it was time to crack some of my WNW beauty's open.
My choise felt on the Fe.2b "early, and i hope i can give you guy's a nice WIP regarding this beautiful airplane
First, this is what i am gonna use for this build.
Some HGW goodie's
(http://i.imgur.com/T1DU3Jlh.jpg)
Some ground work
(http://i.imgur.com/wb1k3yah.jpg)
And of course my home made woodgrain color chart.

Time to start, and soon you guy's get the WIP photo's.

Question for the specialists :)
As i am gonna build Fe.2b 'Baroda 15' the instructions mentioned for the pilot's locker that the fuel lines needs to be removed.
I assume the reason for this is the lack of the 18 gallon petrol tank where the pilot sit's on??
But, when i look to the photo's of The Vintage Aviator Fe.2b which also has the pilot's locker, the fuel lines are still in place??
Pilot's locker
(http://i.imgur.com/qiSJ0Ach.jpg)
And the fuel lines
(http://i.imgur.com/6qfD1xah.jpg)
I'm a little bit confused about this.:hmmm: Can anybody tell me why, or why their is a difference between these two cockpit configurations??

Hello,
when I carefully study the TVA reproduction photo and the fuel lines on the dashboard for the 18 gallon tank under the pilot's seat in the WNW instructions then there's a difference in its configuration: there seems to be only one round device (no idea 'bout the propper term) and no rectacular device on the right (no term neitheir). Perhaps the truth is in the middle: You don't have to remove all the fuel lines but only the devices for the second fuel tank? That would be my interpretation. For the single tank no doubled 'devices' ...
The Fe2b is next on my list so I'll follow your postings with huge interest.
Best wishes

Hi Borsos,
very interesting explanation regarding those fuel lines. My guess is, that WNW made some mistake in their instructions by saying to completely remove the fuel lines, that doesn't make sense to me.
Secondary devices could indeed be removed when the fuel tank isn't installed, but it could be, that there is, or better said was an option for installment between sorties? In that case, everything can stay the way it is. Like you said, the truth could be in the middle.......Thank's for your feedback Borsos, i appreciate that allot. ;)
I decided to keep those fuel lines and their selector switches, that way, it will give an nice detail to the pilot's cockpit.

Hi folk's,
time to get started on this wooden wonder. Today i added two new colors to my woodgrain color chart.
Those are the two at the right side.
Reason for this : i wasn't happy with the colors i had, so i made two new ones based on a yellow base coat. For the base coat i used Tamiya XF-3 and regarding the oil colors i used Raw Umber and Burnt Umber.
First thing to do, a black primer coat to the part's.
Second, the part's that needed the woodgrain color where first painted in XF-3 Yellow.
The gondola insides where all painted in their colors. Paint's used are : XF-3 Yellow, X-32 Titanium Silver and Mr. Paint clear doped linnen.
Also, fuel tank, pilot's seat and some details where painted with X-32 Titanium Silver.
For the woodgrain i used the same technique as i did with my two previous WNW build's. I choosed the XF-3 + Burnt Umber combination.
With this technique there are many color variations that can be achieved, just by the use of more or less clean brushes.
Here you can see two different woodgrain textures with the same paint.

Hi Danny,
that's a fascinating theory too. It would give the option to add or reduce weight respectively by installing or deinstalling the 2nd fuel tank. That definitely makes sense. And to leave the lines as they are actually gives nice detail :)
I love the careful way you experimented with different oils to produce different woodgrains, very convincing!
All the best

Applying the wood grain is not so difficult as it look's. It's a fairly simple technique which can be used by every modeler, skilled or beginner.

Hi guy's, time to show you some more WIP photo's.
The oil paint is completely dried, so time to paint some details and put the cockpit together.
First thing to do, glue the cockpit floor to the ammunition locker.
Here you see the difference of color in the wood grain pattern.
I decided to keep the fuel lines, which where running along the bulkhead under the IP. I painted the fuel lines and other details with Vallejo and Tamiya acrylics.
Radiator, pilot's seat and pilot's locker where also glued.
Rudder pedals, painted and glued to the cockpit floor.
Instrument panel, details painted and added some decals.
Finally, gunner section glued to the pilot's cockpit section.

I did some more work on the Fee's cockpit section today.
I enclosed the observers and pilot's cockpit into the two wooden frame halves. Also the frontal iron framework was added to the observers section. Fuel tank and control column also.
Next step, adding the instrument panel.
Radiator support bars glued. Engine mount added to the wooden frame work.
Rudder pedal control cables and support rigging finished.
And a quick dry-fit into the two fuselage half's.

Danny;
I'll simply echo everyone else's comments - this is a truly inspiring build. I was utterly blown away by your first photos of the yellow base with oil on top for the woodwork (even my wife turned her head at my amazement - how's that for effect ;-). You really do make it look easy; lovely technique and stunning results. I'll be searching out more of your inspiring builds and yes, please share more of your wood graining technique. In fact, if I may make a request, could you share close ups of your samples so we can jot down your formulas? I need all the inspiration I can get! My grateful thanks for sharing;

Jimbo, many thank's for your really kind comment. ;)
This oil wood grain technique is based on a real simple technique, which can be achieved by everyone, in all skill stages. I don't make it look easy Jimbo, it's simply is easy to do so. ;)
I will take close up photo's of the samples with their formula. I also planning to do a little WIP video of the wood grain with oil's, but i need to find the time for that. But it will come.

Hi Guy's,
lot's of people asked me regarding my wood grain technique how i achieve that result. So at first i had a plan to shoot a video of the WIP, but as i am no video guy, and my English isn't really what it should to be, i decided to shoot some extra photo's with the explanation of the several step's that need's to be taken.
I added some explanation into the photo's themselves so it is easy to copy them with the explanation.
I hope they are of some use to you guy's.

The final result look's like this :

Due to the use of the oil paint, the drying time will be around a week. There are additives to get a quicker drying time, but i didn't use them yet with this technique.

Today i made some progress on the Fee.
Time to glue the bottom armor plate onto the fuselage
(http://i.imgur.com/z2TVL6Ch.jpg)
This was already painted in a black primer coat and today i painted the iron coat on it.
Next step, the landing gear. I dry-fitted each part onto the fuselage and glued only the part's together.
After the glue dried, i removed the landing gear from the fuselage to ease the painting proces.
The early balcony machine-gun mount was also glued together and afterwards removed.
Finally i made an early start on the 120 hp Beardmore engine also.
