Title: DFW T-28 Floh [1/32] Planet Models
Post by: Manni on March 30, 2017, 06:50:08 PM
Hello my friends,
I decided to start a little "in-between-project". So I took the odd looking DFW Floh from Planet Models.
First I will intoduce you, what is in the little top opening box.

(https://abload.de/img/4czz5p.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=4czz5p.jpg)

The parts are a bit scratched and have to be aligned with some hot water. There is a little PE-fret with seatbelts, controlhorns, turnbuckles and a dashboard.

(https://abload.de/img/9try40.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=9try40.jpg)

The instructions are simple , but easy to understand as the paitguide.

(https://abload.de/img/653lom.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=653lom.jpg)

(https://abload.de/img/7uhxh5.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=7uhxh5.jpg)

(https://abload.de/img/839yui.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=839yui.jpg)

At first I decided to sand down the openingsand footsteps and replaced then by some spare parts from the WNW DFW

(https://abload.de/img/10i5y3k.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=10i5y3k.jpg)

Then I drilled the holes for the exhaust pipies, took some blu tack and secured the pipes, made from wire end sleeves, from the outside and glued then in proper space from the inside.

(https://abload.de/img/13mzzt9.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=13mzzt9.jpg)

(https://abload.de/img/144taj0.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=144taj0.jpg)

(https://abload.de/img/16r8yi8.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=16r8yi8.jpg)

All wings got some tubes for a better stability and the ailerons were cut out and pinned in a more attractive position.

(https://abload.de/img/20zsatg.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=20zsatg.jpg)

Then I started with the cockpit. It is very rudimentary and I added some details and decals by myself.

(https://abload.de/img/17cmloc.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=17cmloc.jpg)

(https://abload.de/img/181kxkf.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=181kxkf.jpg)

(https://abload.de/img/19l5yng.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=19l5yng.jpg)

I think the seat is way too narrow, but I was too lazy to change it.

After that I took the landing gear and think it is not sturdy enough for the heavy resine plane, so I will replace them by a brass tube.

(https://abload.de/img/21a3zhb.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=21a3zhb.jpg)

(https://abload.de/img/22fea99.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=22fea99.jpg)

Next step will be the priming.
Bye,
Manni

Well done Manni; I've wondered what the parts looked like in this kit.

It's a good start & I like your approach with the exhausts, it really does add to the effect.

Regards
Russell

That did not take long! Excellent start to an unusual subject - and super extra details, especially the cockpit.

Last week I managed to make some progress.
The fuselage halves were closed and everything was primed with Alclad primer in flat black.
Afterwards, I have overdone everything with fine sandpaper and worked the ribs out.

(https://abload.de/img/23slklk.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=23slklk.jpg)

(https://abload.de/img/2415kc1.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=2415kc1.jpg)

The wheels got caps from the rest box. These are withheld from the modeler, although they are clearly recognizable in original photos.

(https://abload.de/img/25bfj7h.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=25bfj7h.jpg)

Several highly diluted layeres of paint were applied in such a way that the details and the preshading are still visible.

(https://abload.de/img/26apjbr.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=26apjbr.jpg)

(https://abload.de/img/27e8jgj.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=27e8jgj.jpg)

(https://abload.de/img/281xjru.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=281xjru.jpg)

Now everything was covered with a 1mm masking tape around the outer edge,  apply the so distinctive black strip.

(https://abload.de/img/29ykj9v.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=29ykj9v.jpg)

(https://abload.de/img/300bkfd.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=300bkfd.jpg)

The decals were laid on. These were very thin and extremely fragile. They did not need any Microsol or Microset to lay smooth on the surface.

(https://abload.de/img/312qk5o.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=312qk5o.jpg)

(https://abload.de/img/32afjig.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=32afjig.jpg)

The control horns were provided as photoetch parts but in my eyes they were not very satisfying, therefore I have replaced them by control horns found in my sparebox.

(https://abload.de/img/335xj43.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=335xj43.jpg)

The base color was blended from 50% X2, 25% XF54 and 25% XF55, giving a beautiful semi gloss effect.

(https://abload.de/img/3495k8m.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=3495k8m.jpg)

The bungee rope was simulated with flexible sewing thread (prym) and will be later painted accordingly.

(https://abload.de/img/35w7ks6.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=35w7ks6.jpg)

Finally, only a decent weathering will follow, since the machine was not really in use. The struts as well as the bracing will also be attached.
Bye for now,
Manni

Very cool project and beautifully put together by you. What a crazy plane - beats the Gee Bee R11 for aerodynamic insanity and that's a hard ask.

Thank YOU all for the very kind comments :D.
In the last days I have managed to complete the model.

First I used a colour pencil over Vallejo decktan and painted the woodgrain.

(https://abload.de/img/3632r7o.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=3632r7o.jpg)

After that I took clear yellow and orange and varnished the prop.

(https://abload.de/img/37qro8h.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=37qro8h.jpg)

The base was made with some putty and sieved sand and gravel.

(https://abload.de/img/385xro0.jpg) (http://abload.de/image.php?img=385xro0.jpg)

After that I put some white gue on it and applied with my DIY 8€ Grassmaster Static grass on the base, primed it black and sprayed it with various green and earth tones.

Excellent results! You have made this awkward aircraft look lovely! I am interested in details on the DIY grassmaster. I assume it stands for Do it yourself? Is it a strainer  and Magnet of some kind? Please give some details!

You've done a remarkable job on this little beasty!  All your added detail turned this ugly duckling into a real show stopper, if not a swan.
