Title: ICM's 1917 Ford Model T Ambulance
Post by: fredjocko on February 04, 2017, 01:22:56 AM
I have been in a modeling slump for the past couple of years and I have not been able to shake it. Even building sci-fi, car models, ship models,...nothing seemed to work. At least not until I started building Italeri's F7F-3 Tigercat into an USAF A-2F Tigercat used in Viet Nam; but that is another story. I "discovered" ICM's neat Ambulance kit and it just seemed to click. I started building this out of box, with nothing extra done and it literally started falling together. This is an incredible kit right out of the box. I am building this as the AEF SSU 524 Ambulance in France, 1918. I bought another one to do as the French version and put some work into it. I feel my mojo coming back.

Here is the requisite box art:

I will post more later. Thank you so much for looking.

Thanx,
Carl

There is a nice little engine that could use some sparkplug wires if you are going to leave the hood (bonnet) open. The unpainted part is the steering gearbox.

The stretchers are very nice. I just wish they had one that was folded.

Here are some more bits. The wheels are completed and painted in light grey because apparently rubber wasn't rubber back then. ICM even included the valve stems.

The cab is completed. I had to touch up the pedals.

Here is the canvas roof. It has a lot of sink marks that I didn't fix since you cannot see them anyway when it is on.

The siren is really neat; but the horn is solid so I hollowed it out as much as I could.

Everything together.

The bonnet installed and the roof on just to see how it looks.

You really cannot see anything inside with the roof on the stretcher in place. That is why I want to build another one.

I remember my Grandfather telling a story of how he crashed one of the first US Ambulances he drove...he was a driver in East Africa and apparently wasn't used to left hand drive, and forgot that the spare wheel was on the right...he took a corner into the hospital too tight and the spare wheel hit the wall, knocking it down!
 I'll definitely be following this!

That's one reason why I took the metro or cab when I was in England. I was afraid I would have an accident either in England or in the states when I got home. Supposedly, some of the ambulances were made in England and they have right hand drive. It can't be that hard to switch can it?

I got the decals on and did some weathering.

Added the headlights and the other lights. I just need to put the lenses on after I flat coat it.

I just need to add the lenses and the canvas tie downs from the canopy to the ambulance body. I added the metal brackets on the body and now I need to figure out how to add them on the canvas roof.

I thought I would use a simple cobblestone street base.

Very nice! I really am drawn to the cobblestone base, where did you get the material? I just ordered several sheets for a base I'm working on but yours looks more random and realistic.
Cheers,
Lance

Thank you so much Lance. I actually purchased the base from Jose Rodriguez, He owns a resin company called Tiger Productions and he does a lot of stuff in 1/72 scale and he just branched out into 1/48 and 1/32 (took him long enough).  :)

This base is in 1/32 scale and I have included the link to all of the bases in this scale: http://www.tigerdio.com/ProductListings/Prod_SubCat.php?Category=Custom Dioramics&SubCategory1=Bases (http://www.tigerdio.com/ProductListings/Prod_SubCat.php?Category=Custom Dioramics&SubCategory1=Bases)

I don't own stock or get any get back from him. I just enjoy his products. The base comes in grey resin and I just primed it in grey paint and then used various shades of grey, white, and black to pick out the bricks. I use Mig's light grey panel wash to simulate the sand the between the bricks.

Many Thanks for the link. I wish I'd had this before I ordered the cobblestone sheet elsewhere, the rectangular sheet here is perfect! If the order arrives and I don't like the material I'll be pursuing this one.
Cheers,
Lance

She is finally finished. I messed up the headlights; but I'm pretty happy with the results. The kit comes with a canvas front/windshield which I cut off as I found a lot more pictures without it then I did with it. I added some guitar wire as the brackets and used some discarded lead bitewing cut into strips and painted khaki to represent the straps that hold the roof down. It might needs some more weathering; but my first model in 18 months is done!!!

Very nice model! I think it was a good choice to cut the canvas windshield. I never saw exactly such a window on a Ford-t ambulance.

Thank you Des. I'm sure yours will be fantastic. There were. I pitfalls and everything fit with no issues. I screwed up the headlights, the lenses are beveled and the bevel goes inside and I used too much Elmers glue and mucked them up. I'm going to do a French one and leave the back gate down so you can see the other stretcher and the inside. It's an awesome kit and highly recommended.
