Title: new: a rebuilted color chart of 1918 french 5 color camouflage
Post by: xan on November 06, 2016, 06:58:54 PM
Hello

I would like to present you a new apportation of my friend  Marc Chassard.
For those who don't the man he is a french specialist of WWI french aircraft, particulary of Nieuport planes.

Marc Chassard did this book
(https://pictures.abebooks.com/isbn/9782840100461-fr.jpg)

well, last summer he worked about 1918 french (and USA) 5 colors camouflage

He decided to rebuild the differents dopes and applied them in real fabric.
To rebuild the dopes, he follows the original instructions mixing pigment to dope in the proportion indicated, those who know the butterfly project and windsock toelle article know what I'm talking about.

Then he applied dope in the fabric respecting the original process (two neutral dope coat , two pigmented dope coat and another neutral )
compare the result with several conservated fabric pieces.

but all this work was quite expensive so he decided to sell color charts with real pieces of painted fabric (3cm x 2cm) in limited edition (120 pieces)
taking care of the difference of pigment productor, he propose two brown and two light green
Behind, a text in french and english which explain how was the work done , and the references he used.

this is the result:

Marc propose to sell the color chart for 28€ transport inclued  (anywhere in the word)
I've got the chart in hands and I promise you it's a really beautifull work , and the ultimate reference to paint the french 5 colors camouflage.

If someone is interested just let me know by PM and I will put you in contact with Marc Chassard.

Last thing, he did  a silimar job with Nieuport dopes, I will present it here too but I didn't want to mix the two informations...

Thank you so much Xan. Years ago a friend of mine gave me a digital copy of Project Butterfly along with some paint samples. This will be a great addition to the knowledge that's out there!

I have to say the result is not positive fir the italian paints:

we have now to search adequated references in gunze or Tamiya...
