Title: Fokker Dr.1 RODEN 1:32
Post by: Adam on September 05, 2012, 05:47:22 AM
I would like to show my first building in scale 1:32 mode, it is Rodens Fokker Dr.1.
I’m building it for testing  such big scale for me.
I found information in internet that it is good for beginners, so I bought this model, mask and PE parts.
If my test will be successful I’m planning to do Rodens 1:32 scale Nieuport 24 bis of course flown by Lt. Gilewicz from soviet  army and Polish service than I will describe fantastic story of this pilot and his plane.
All what I have to build Fokker Dr.1:

I’m waiting for delivery Vectors Oberursel motor.
I’m planning to do Lt. Hermann Beckers plane from 12 Jasta.

My production began 1 August, so I’m showing all was is done to this day.

You have started off very well, what you have done so far is excellent, the frame and bracing wires are well done.

Adam,
Looking very nice indeed. I built this one last year, a very nice kit to work with. I got into a little trouble with the interior frame however, and had to do a lot of "shaving" to get the mid wing on properly, my frame was built just slightly too high above the side panels of the fuselage. Other then that a really enjoyable project. Do lots of test fitting as you go and all will be fine.
Looking forward to more photos.
Cheers,
Lance :)

Thank you for yours nice opinions my friends. :)

Steve,  this blue card isn’t any special material, it is  overdue “EU travel health insurance”. I needed some plastic plate for pilots seat cushion and it was close at hand.

Adam, it's a wonderful WIP!
I love the internal rigging (as gregory already said) but the most interesting feature is the way you transformed the panel on the back of the seat!
did you use electric wire to simulate the lacing?

and I replaced it by PE part from PART ( I know that you are using PE parts from PART in yours SPAD VII  ;D)

So the back panel of the seat place comes as PE already with the strings on it?

Interior of the fuselage is almost ready.
Control column.

Compass was tilted parallelly to the ground because original models compass was parallel to fuselage axis.

On the right side of fuselage is oli level indicator and altimeter,  both was made by me.

I modified a little fuel and oil tank making hole for oil inlet of course on the upper cover was made additional hole.

Some pictures of cockpit.

On pictures showing cockpit isn't showing hand fuel pomp, but Rodens model have it, so I don’t know, what to do with this pomp?

I choose Backers  because black, white checker painted on his plane looks like polish checker painted on our planes, but colors are different.

Adam,
The "checkers" are not insignificant to me; the legacy of the Kosciuszko Squadron and their incredible contribution to the success of the Battle of Britain and indeed the entire conflict is a proud one, and I can understand why you'd tend towards the "checkers" scheme. I also like the scheme you've chosen for this build as the "streaked" pattern uninterrupted by over colouring is very nice indeed.
Cheers,
Lance

So your next one will be:

It is 72nd scale Elf model but WNW 32nd scale conversion should be just feasible.

Fuselage is ready for painting.

When I finished my work with bottom of the fuselage one of my polish friend told me, that easier will be putting peace of tinfoil.
On this picture it is pretty visible that it is good idea, probably I will do this:

Now I'm preparing for painting streaking camouflage.
First test of Lifecolors paints.

I made test model to see result of painting.

Yes, we all know the monotony of filling and sanding... And cleaning the parts cut off the sprues...

The test version of streaking does look fine. Yet, I guess it is 72nd scale Dr.I and I am afraid the same technique may not work so well on larger surfaces... I wish you luck and am looking forward to see the final result.

Thanks Przemol.
You are right with painting technique. I made another test on bigger surface, it look not good. I will have to make test with different brushes. I'm using flat brush for small model was OK, but here I have to find bigger and I will do it again. Earlier I tried to do streaking by airbrush, but it wasn't good idea.  :-[.

Adam, I am really looking forward to see your results. I can hardly remember a model with convincing streaking, probably what Wojtek Fajga did once using his decals was closest to reality IMHO. That is why I avoid this camo, I have built black Jacob's Dr.I and have plans to build red/white Raben's one later. Streaking intimidates me.
Title: Re: Fokker Dr.1 RODEN 1:32
Post by: WarrenD on October 15, 2012, 12:17:11 AM
Adam,
What PrzemoL said.  ;)   Seriously, it IS hard to make convincing streaking. I was talked into doing a Fokker tripe as my first kit when returning to scale modeling and this aspect alone frustrated me more than any other aspect, and my learning curve was steep never having worked with p/e, resin, used and airbrush, etc. ever before.

Hang in there, we're all pulling for ya!

When result of this test seems for me acceptable I dared to paint my plane.
Results you can see beneath.

Hello Adam:  As has been said by many here, the streaking is a difficult scheme to paint.  It is all subjective.  I think yours looks convincing and you did a good job.  As the model comes together it all sort of works out.  There are as many techniques as there are modelers.  Your work is outstanding and I am watching with interest as you progress on this build.

Thank you, Mark.
Yours comment was a motivating factor, to to continue the work.
I sit down in my workshop. This is my temporary workshop. in turn of the year I'm plannig to make better.

I set to paint  black crosses on the upper wing.

I couldn't  find any picture of my model, I found only left side  painthing drawings, so I decided paint similar to the Hptm von Tutschek's plane from 12 Jasta. Black cross with white edging will be paint on the black surface.
Never paint black on black, so I'm chose one of color from Lifecolors set for painting rubber.
I will be next very big test for me.

Adam.

The use you make of old CDs is really ingenious.

Today first time I used masks for painting.
Sticking on masks and painting was without any problems.
But removing masks was nearly cause of heart attack.  :'(

I will have to manage with this problem.  :-\

All others crosses are looking well.  :)  in my opinion.

Been there, done that, and will inevitably do it again, so I feel your pain. We put so much work into these models, take all sorts of precautions, and still these incidents rear their ugly head from time to time. The secret as we all know is in perseverance, and not giving up. I look forward to seeing how you fix the problem. And fix it you will!

Keith.

This set for gun is rather easy to use, but other paints need a little practice. I'm using of course air brush, and for small parts rather brush. This colors ought to be paint very small layers which should dry before paint the next layer.

It is not at all finished. Now I'm close to finish fuselage. Some of my friends noted that MG in my model are a little cross-eyed, so I took out and I adjusted these guns.

Next ailerons, elevator and rudder got lines.

Few days ago I got new engine from Vector.
Roden's  engine seems a little to big,  but I will do both, on the Rodens I will try painting such big for me engine.
Now some pictures my engines.
Engine from Roden set.

Adam is that the kit cowl with p/e detail? Is there enough material on the inside of it to grind out? Is the Vector engine also too big?

Steve
Title: Re: Fokker Dr.1 RODEN 1:32
Post by: Dal Gavan on December 10, 2012, 03:56:38 PM
You're doing some beautiful work, Adam.  The engine came out nicely, indeed.

As Steve suggested, can you thin out the cowl? It has to be excessively thick, compared to the real thing, because of the limitations on moulding the parts.  Or will you perhaps need to reduce some of the cylinder details to make the cowl fit (which would be a shame).

Dal.
Title: Re: Fokker Dr.1 RODEN 1:32

Rather than removing details from the tops of the cylinders, you can shorten the cylinders at the base.  That will reduce the diameter of the engine while preserving the cylinder head detail.

As you suggested, first I will try thin out the cowl.
If it don't help I will try to shorten cylinders in Vector engine.

Last time I hadn't any time for modelling.  :-\
I only grind out cowl from inside , for Rodens engine it is enough.

I think it is looking good.

In vector engine I reduced a little cylinders sockets at the engine corps. I think  that it help.
Today I began painting parts for this engine.

During painting I noticed that in 2 cylinders was broken valves lever, on picture from right side.  :-[.
