Title: Show us your - Fokker E.V
Post by: Des on August 31, 2012, 08:17:27 PM
This is my Avis 1:32 scale Fokker E.V model, for a limited run kit it was quite an enjoyable build.

Yeah I`ve planned it as a real weekend build. Something differnt almost OOB. What scheme are you going to use?

Something to keep in mind about the E.V / D.VIII -- the "all green wings" theory has been thrown into question by the well respected WWI aircraft historian Dan-San Abbott, who specialized in German aircraft colors. Here is an interesting discussion on the subject, in case you have not seen it:

oh yeah, has been read all the topics concerning the "colorful" painting of E.V raised by Dan, have seen the pictures of 1:1 replica which IMHO it looks like the rainbow ;D..nevertheless I am going to do in compliance with Dan investigation. Will be polish one ;D

Gary,
A beautiful Model and wonderful tribute. I have a Dragon 1:48 Scale DVIII and the wing is done in the Dark Green/Light Blue scheme we had referenced for many years; the streaking "thing" researched and basically established by DSA really surprised me.
Your interpretation of the streaked finish is impressive, I sure hope WNW or perhaps Roden do a 1:32 version of this little gem. Which Kit have you used here?
Cheers,
Lance

  Des,
The E.V still looks outstanding my old friend. It's always great to look back and enjoy any of your builds. Love that black and yellow killer bee scheme.

@Gary,
I remember following the build thread for this one. Aerodrome I think. She's still one of the finest E.V's I've seen.

Merry Christmas to You and Yours

My DML 1/48 E.V, built in 2003.  This is the famous Jasta 36 scheme we've all seen and is the subject of the Eduard E.V.  I mention this because I built this before Eduard's release.  I don't buy the idea that the star was black, but red...and I had a sheet of Polikarpov Red Stars in 1/48 that came with an Insignia magazine and I didn't want them to go to waste.  :)
Lozenge decals are the wonderful 1/48 Americal Gryphon 4-color.  The wing got a coat of Fokker Dark Green, which was before I knew about the stained wings.
Sadly this model met its demise while flying off a bookshelf.  I'd like to rebuild it sometime.

I loved that Dragon kit and still have a couple floating around.  I was going to do a MFJ version with yellow cowling and tailplane.  I did do a flying model of Osterkamp's bumblebee---it really looked great in the air.  Anyway, it seems more schemes pop up over the years, for a long time it was only the Jasta 6 versions, but they are also truly spectacular in their black and white petals.

And could the red star for a personal marking have more to do with a certain beer than with political leanings, if the red star had any such meaning in 1918?  I've wondered about this for a while, tell me what you think.

Indeed my friend the only red star I am able to accept and to like (living in a ex-communistic country) is the one on Heineken bottles ;)
A very nice model!!! Sad to hear that it had a crash... Rebuild it and you can always apply the streaking on the wing.

Here is one of my EVs. In this case the Eduard 1/48th Newer Mold. I built this as a review for Internet Modeler but haven't been able to search out the Build to supply the Link. This was an OOB build but I used AG Lozenge. Jasta 6 of course  ;D I  just purchased a new camera and am experimenting!

Thanks Nigel. This is a relatively older build. I have another EV, a Dragon kit, that pre dates this one. I will shoot pictures and post. It has the all green wing considered correct at the time I built the model. I am learning to use the new camera so this provides a perfect opportunity to practice and re shoot some of my older builds.

Thought it wouldn't hurt to add this old relic of my 1:48 Scale days, built 12-13 years ago. Quick snapshots on the kitchen table this morning, she's dusty and a little rough, Dragon Kit with Microscale lozenge, hand cut nose feathers, and I think Kit decals for the scheme. Other then the PE struts a pretty neat little Kit as I recall. All green wing as was the "theory" in those days...............

RAGIII,
I had read somewhere that applying watered down white glue to thicken the two dimensional struts worked well. As I recall it took about 6 coats and, after a light sanding worked out nicely. I tried the same trick on the cabanes on their DR I and it was a "horror show". I think in that case I rushed between coats and got a half spherical chain finish for my stupidity! :-[

Hi Mark
You are absolutely right about Lance's old EV looking really good irrespective of current orthodoxy on the wing colour. As I noted earlier. I also finished the Dragon EV  - pretty hopelessly in my case - with a dark green wing.

I do hope that fears about finish accuracy don't inhibit postings of earlier examples of our work. It's only recently that friends here on the forum have made me aware of DSA's work on EV finishes but that does pose some challenging questions for me in terms of the number of strips of colour on the wing surface. We often see four, but I understand that it can be even seven or more and for the particular aircraft I have in mind the DSA work even suggests ten!

Besides, I love seeing examples of work being done say ten or twenty years ago when the challenges were so different

Best wishes
Nigel

Hello All

May I present to you my take on the Eduard 1/48 Fokker E.V and thank all of you who helped in those early, busy days with references and advice, not least Zabu, ALBATROS and Trackpad. All the faults are mine alone.

First some notes on the finish.  Eduard ascribe this aeroplane to a mystery owner, perhaps from Jasta 8. Confusingly, the main art work on the box neither accords with the image on the side panel, nor with the decaling and finishing instructions.  Furthermore, the guidance is of an era when the entire upper and lower wing surfaces were thought to be a plain olive, perhaps with the signs of streaking.

(https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2943/15370332502_f8d048a17e_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/pqdYmN)IMG_4765 (https://flic.kr/p/pqdYmN) by nigeljjackson (https://www.flickr.com/people/101192141@N08/), on Flickr

I am only aware of one photo of this aircraft, which Zabu found for me. It provides a view inside a hanger, taken from the starboard, forward quarter looking back towards the tail. The snake and rabbit emblem are shown clearly enough. For the wing surface, we just have to extrapolate from any clues in the photo; perhaps the original negative might help us more.

Without absolute consensus, the current orthodoxy seems to rule out plain olive finishes on the wings. Instead, it points us towards bands of coloured wood stain, streakily applied: two colours on the upper surface and two below. What appears uncertain is the number of bands, with the sources provided for me suggesting between 3 and 10. The colour profiles kindly provided by Gary (Trackpad), vary from 3-7; Dan San Abot (DsA) felt this might extend to up to 10 and in my early construction notes I tried to map out how this might look.  From Gary’s images, where the number of upper surface bands was odd, the extra one seems always to have been green.

To add further confusion there appears an element of doubt as to whether these bands of colour were, when viewed from the upper trailing edge, angled as a forward slash, or a backward slash; DsA raised the possibility of the latter. In the absence of a direct plan view of this mystery aircraft, I’ve gone for four forward-slashed bands on each wing surface.

The next challenge concerned the actual colours employed. In casual terms we are talking about a green, an earthy brown, a blue and a variant of a purple, but these words hardly convey the true sense of a finish that seemed heavily streaked anyway. Aesthetically, I prefer the tones used by Rick (RAGIII)  in his magnificent E.V build, but I have gone along the lines of those used by Filip (xmald)  in his equally fine work, although banding it in different ways. I’ve attempted through the medium of oil paints to capture, if non-too successfully, the colour swatches and Ronny Bar artwork in Volume 2 of  Achim Sven Engels’ (Fokker Team – Schorndorf) Fokker D.VIII in Detail.

I’ve tried to vary the varnish finish according to the surface on which it is applied. My earlier notes and some of the photos seem to suggest a much glossier finish to the wings prior to weathering than I have managed. To keep the model in line with the others in my collection, I decided not to apply dirt and muck on the tyres and tailskid etc or engine oil in exposed places. That is a challenge I’ll have to face with my 1/32 work.

Details of the actual build did not materialise on the forum as I progressed, but if Des is happy I’ll post something retrospectively to show the stages.

Thanks for looking and sorry for such a long posting.

Best wishes

Very nicely done - a fine build and great scheme! The top wing streaking is top notch and a great lead to follow for my build down the road

Lance,
I am glad you added your Beautiful build right after mine. It gives a really good comparison on the parallel builds and the different way in which we tackled the kits challenges.
RAGIII

PS: I too have an older 1/48th kit in these Markings on this thread. In my case the Eduard, second release. I also have a Dragon kit with the Jasta 6 scheme with Lance Personal Marking  ;D

Fokker E.V / D.VIII of MFJ1 flown by Oblt.z.S Gotthard Sachsenberg August 1918

I'll add my own interpretation of this D.VIII again here as I have revisited it since posting in "completed models" and given the varnished wooden wing another layer of gloss varnish over the previous satin. I had been disappointed when I applied the satin coat as the wood lost some of its tone - and a plain wooden wing on such a new machine would likely be highly polished anyway.
So here is my final (copyrighted!) thought on this D.VIII.

Avis 1/32 kit with Pheon decals

The figure is actually the Encore Oswald Boelcke from their Albatros D.II kit (so not in MF uniform I'm afraid.) I thought his ghost might very well turn up to look at another aeroplane with a history of wing collapse, given his own fate!
