Just a quick, none to flash, pic, to prove that I have started
on the old Ninack, which will be a Post war version used
in the policing, of what used to be, Britains' Empire.
Still not sure what one yet, but time will tell.
Cheers Chaps
Dave
-
Dave,
Excellent progress to date my friend. Impressive Liberty. Please keep us post as to your progress.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette
-
Thanks Gregory.
I'ts still raining in old NZ at the moment, so I get
things done . . . . More soon.
Best Regards
Dave
-
Beautiful start on the engine, Dave. Really looking forward to watching your progress on this one. I only have 3 WNW kits and this is one of them.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Dave, If this turns out half as well as your last effort it will be spectacular. Waiting for your next update...................
Cheers,
Lance 8)
-
That's one very shiny engine Dave, looks excellent ;)
We love your detailing and updates....so don't be shy!! ;D
Andrew
-
Never been shy in my life laddie :-)
I'll post some more when I have something respectable.
Cheers Lads
Dave
-
I was wondering when someone was going to do a Ninak! I really like this aircraft (and it's predecessor, the DH4), so this will be one to watch. Have a great build, Dave!
Lindsay
-
Cheers Lindsay . . . . I've had the box for a while now,
so I bit the bullet . . . . Could be fun :)
-
I'm looking forward to watching this build, Dave. Unfortunately the DH.9 in the AWM is behind glass, so you can only see one side and it's difficult to get detail shots. It's the one flown by Parer and McIntosh from the UK to Oz and is in civvie livery. I'll see if I can get up there and get some better piccies in the next week or two.
Dal.
-
Many thaks Dal. You're a good man. I've been putting this one
off for a while now, but now that I've started, it will be all good.
Still need some research, as I go, so many thanks for any good
detail pics you get . . . . Cheers from NZ
Dave
-
Dave, there's a very good walk around in the "Aircraft" folder, which was put up by Des that will be of use.
"Good man"? Me? Only if you don't mention the Bledisloe Cup, mate. :'(
Dal
-
Bledisloe.....that's a step too far Dal....be gone with you!! ;D
The AWM displays are a bit annoying in relation to photography - an iPhone does not suffice unfortunately :(
They are truly awesome though and a must see for any Canberra visitor!!
Andrew
-
OK Lads . . . I won't mention the Bledisloe Cu . . . . . .Oooops!
Oh dear! Thanks for that guys. Haave a good one. Will take a
look at the walkarond.
All the best
Dave
-
Just a few more progress pics of the V12
Getting fiddly now.
Have a good week lads..
Dave
-
2 more
-
A nice clean looking start on the engine. What paints are you using? Will you be weathering it too?
Cheers,
Chris
-
I sprayed on Tamiya Aluminium to begin with, and the cylinders
are Tamiya Semi gloss black, sprayed also. Then all the small
parts wil be brushed. I will be weathering it a bit with the usual
oil streaks and bits of grime, but subtly, as if the engine was
reasonably new.
Cheers
Dave
-
The weekends work . . . Getting there.
Thought about leaving the engine outside
the model (on a stand) and doing the beast
cowlings on. Dont know yet
Cheers
Dave

Would this link be of any use?

Ian
I just bought the CMR Resin DH9a in 1:72 which includes these pics. It's a lovely kit and I'm looking forward to getting started....
-
Thanks Ian :) Just had a look and got some good pics. Cheers
Dave
-
This is how the Liberty will be displayed.
Beside the aircraft, with its cowling on.
-
The castors are awesome.
-
Brilliant, Dave! I love it.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Cheers Bud
I thought about cutting away all the cowlings, but even then
you would'nt really see much of the engine, so I saw a pic
of some guy standing next to one on a wooden trolley (circe 1917 ish)
So I can do the Ninack in all its glory with everything fitted.
Cheers
Dave
-
Engine looks beautifully, don't hide it.
Adam.
-
Great idea Dave, did you scratch the trolley together?
Andrew
-
Hi
The trolley is made from wooden lolly sticks, and then painted.
Seemed easier than plastic. Bit fiddly though.
Small update
Cheers
Dave
-
...The trolley is made from wooden lolly sticks, and then painted.
Seemed easier than plastic. Bit fiddly though....
It's very effective Dave and well worth the fiddle!
Are the castor's scratched as well?
Andrew
-
Yep!
All scratch built.
-
I like the trolley idea (and your work on it) a lot! Best of both options with your approach, I'll be watching your updates carefully.......
Cheers,
Lance
-
Cheers Lance. The Liberty is worth showing, as it is a
little work of art of its own. Once it's completed, the
Plane begins :-)
-
Almost done
-
Dave,
Simply Awesome work my friend.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette
-
Thanks Gregory
I hope the plane turns out the same.
Soon get it started.
Cheers
Dave
-
Liberty almost done. Just finishing off the leads and
dirtying it up a bit, usage-wise. Get the Plane
started soon.
Cheers
Dave
-
Superb work on the engine Dave.
Very much looking forward to see what you do with this beastie. ;)
Andrew
-
Cheers
Finished it now, so here it is. Temporarily on a wee base,
but will eventually be sitting next to the Ninack, once I
get it going this weekend.
All the best
Dave
-
The engine and cart are brilliant, Dave. Can't wait to see what you do with the Ninak.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Superb!
Cheers,
Chris
-
This engine is already a small masterpiece, I look forward to further progress in construction.
-
Thanks for your comment Mietek.
All the best from New Zealand
DAVE

I verify your goodness.

Superb I'm waiting for rest.
Cheers.

Thanks Adam, watch this space.

Cheers
Dave

....watch this space.....
We are, we are........but no pressure Dave ;D ;) 8)
Andrew
-
Yeah! Right! ;D
I'm on a mission to get it agoing this Saturday, as the
weather in New Zealand is to be K**P. But who needs
an excuse eh? ;)
Cheers
Dave
-
Started on the cockpit, and this is as far as I got.
Cheers lads
Dave
-
Beautiful work on the floor, Dave!
Cheers,
Bud
-
A wee bit of a better one
Dave
-
Back again. A little more progress on the cockpit. Slow but steady.
Cheers
Dave
-
Cockpit a bit further on now. Getting there slowly but surely.
-
One more
Cheers lads
Dave
-
Close up of the camera and internal bracing (Its human hair by the way)
-
Gorgeous interior, Dave. That camera is brilliant.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Your interior work is noteworthy. As Bud mentioned the camera looks great. I noticed you ran your frame rigging on the fuselage side of the frame. As the tolerances in these WNW kits is fairly tight that may pose a fit problem. Ensure you dry fit before buttoning it up as you may have to move it. Just a heads up.
Best
Mark
-
:) No Worries .... I trial fit all the way. Thanks for the comments.
Cheers
Dave
-
Ah!Well . . . . Vintage Aviator airshow this weekend
so not much done. Here is the throttle quadrant,as
far as it got, lads.
Bloody good airshow too. Lots of new aircraft.
2 Fokkers, an Albatross DV, and a Black Fe2
Drool . . ..
Cheers
Dave
-
Brilliant work on the linkages, Dave.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Lovely work Dave, nicely done ;)
Andrew
-
Cheers Guys,
Got a good bit further now, so will post a couple of pics in a couple of days.
All the best
Dave
-
Magnificent work on the cockpit, Dave. Great detail and very real looking, gets my vote for certain!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Thanks Lance.
Got to take a few pics now that I've joined it all together.
Still detailing the bits and pieces, like a wireless and suchlike.
Best Regards
Dave
-
The cockpit, as far as I have progressed. Still to add things
like spark wireless and key etc. once I have researched to
find what was actually use in the 1920's. Getting there
slowly.
Best Regards Lads
Dave
-
And one more for luck
-
The interior rigging looks awesome!
Cheers,
Bud
-
After some research, I have now added a scratch built,
Type 57 Reciever and a Spark Gap Transmitter, along
with a post war style Trailing Antenna Spool. Fiddly, and
still to add some wiring. Plus the Telegraphy Key.
Have a good week lads
Dave
-
This one is perhaps a bit better
-
Wow, Dave! Truly brilliant work on the wireless! Won't see much of it when she's all closed up, but still...
Wouldn't have expected anything less from you, mate.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Cheers Bud, but some Ninacks had a sliding hatch just
behind the gun to allow the gear to be installed and
removed so I'll give it a bash and see where I get.
All the best Bud
Dave
-
Those are great colours on the cockpit/frame etc. Love the leather and wood effects!!
Steve
-
....some Ninacks had a sliding hatch just
behind the gun to allow the gear to be installed and
removed so I'll give it a bash and see where I get....
Sounds like an interesting addition Dave, and one I'm sure you'll be able to pull off - looking forward to it ;D ;D ;D
(lots of pics please ;D ;))
Andrew
-
No worries Andrew. I'm a wee bit slow, but I get there.
All the very best from NZ
Dave
-
Hello Dave:
The radio work is outstanding! As Bud mentioned when you button it up it all goes away, hopefully your sliding panel will be able to show off that work to good effect. Lots of time and research I'll bet went into arriving at that scheme.
Looking forward to more.
Best
Mark
-
Thanks
Seemingly, the Raf used these wireless telegraphy units up unti the 1920's
when real radio telephony came in properly. However, the info on this stuff
is vague and undocumented, at least Google-wise, so a bit of licence has to
be used. Its as near as 'dammit' . . . . And in RAF blue too.
Best Regards
Dave
-
Dave, that's outstanding. The radio gear looks the part, but the rigging has got me gobsmacked. It's one reason I've still got the Ninak labelled as "Too Scary"- even the rigging has rigging. :o
Cheers.
Dal.
-
Dave,
Now that's some very impressive wireless set up my old friend. Excellent details and paint and an outstanding project to date.Looking forward to seeing more.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette
-
Cheers Chaps
Here's a wee bit more, however the pics are not all that
great. Ive added as pair of phones and a bit of wiring,
plus an accumulator battery, fed from what will be, the
external wind generator.
Cheers
Dave
-
Dave,
Got to love those tiny little important details my old friend. You're well on your way to having the best detailed Ninack cockpit I've seen yet. Bravo and Well Done!
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette
-
Thats amazing work. The layers of detail and the precision are fascinating.
Steve
-
:) Just a quick note to say Happy Christmas to all
you Happy Campers, and thanks for all your support in 2012.
Have a great one and a Bloody good new year to each and every one of you.
All the best from New Zealand
Dave
-
Dave,
The same to you my old friend. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette

Hi Lads
Didnt get too much done but the instrument panel
is in place, so a quick pic to let you see it. I really
should get lessons in how to take pictures LOL
Cheers
Dave
-
Dave,
That's one very busy "Pit" masterfully done. I'm drawn to the rear windscreen; all from the kit or did you do some add ons? Looks great!
Cheers,
Lance
-
It was done using the kit part, with two small brackets
and bungees added both sides. I understand that the
observer used to tuck maps and stuff behind the bungees.
Cheers
DAVE
-
Very nicely executed.
Steve
-
Cheers Steve
:D I have to admit, I love the wee fiddly bits.
The carpet monster munches quite a few bits too, :-\
but I get there eventually.
All the very best
Dave
-
Superb, Dave. More photo's, please.
Dal.
-
Here's something silly I added last night
-
To continue the silliness
-
Silly?! Not at all, Dave. Rather, highly accurate and authentic cockpit details.
Cheers,
Bud
-
It's those touches that really make the model come alive. Beautiful!
I'm sure you really had to suffer for your art in finding an appropriate source picture to scale down. You poor man. ;)
LT
-
There was some nice totty in the 1920's.
Someones' Granny now thought.
Servicemen always had their pinups. My
late father was in the RAF in WW2, and he
was on Bombers. He had one, but I dont
think it was of my mother :)
Cheers
Dave
-
Very nice realistic touches Dave! These are the little things that add real human interest to the subject, IMHO. Great job on research! ;) BTW, the cockpit looks great!
I know this is a little off topic, but since you mentioned it, what bomber did your father fly in in WWII? If you don't mind talking about it, I'd love to hear a little more. I enjoy aviation from that era as well, and certainly the human interest side of folks and family members we know who served in these machines. Thanks.
Regards,
Bob
-
Hi Bob
Dad trained as a navigator on Avro Ansons, went onto Short Stirlings, with a wee
stint on Lancasters, then ended the last few months in Mosquitos. Didnt talk too
much about it, but he raved about the Mossie. I will see the only flying Mossie in
January, here in New Zealand, before it goes away to the States. Check out ;
'Mosquito Wairarapa' on Google.
Thanks for the comments
Cheers
Dave
-
Thanks Dave. :) Sounds like your dad had interesting and varied service---what a range of bombers! Enjoy the Mossie--one of my favorite aircraft from WWII. Very elegant lines, sort of like the Pfalz D.III in WWI. Thanks for the tip. I'll have to see where it will be in the States next year. We have a great 2-day warbirds show in Reading, PA, every June. Now . . . back to the Ninak! ;)
Regards,
Bob
-
Hi Bob
Cheers
A very Happy Christmas from New Zealand
and prosperous 2013.
Now, back to the Ninack
Dave
Try http://www.mosquitorestoration.com/
-
Dave,
WOW thanks for the excellent link my old friend. They can keep the Spitfires and the Mustangs, give me a Mossie anytime. The Mosquito is my absolute favorite Britsh aircraft from WW II.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette
-
My old boy was a definite fan. He flew a few times
over the Reich, but felt safer in the Mossie, as
nothing could catch it. Didnt talk about much else,
but I know he got up to no good. ;)
By the way, A very Happy Christmas to you and all
the guys who are part of this great forum, and a
bloody good New Year to each and every one of you.
Cheers and all the very best from down under
Dave
-
After some research I found that post 1919 raf aircraft were
fitted with Type A sutton harnesses, and a sutton harness
particular as regards the observer. So.... Here is an observers
harness. Working on the Type A now.
Cheers
Dave
-
Pilots Sutton harness almost done :D
-
Super 'pit Dave, a wonderful model in itself!
-
Looking good Dave!
-
Hello Dave:
Thanks for the seasonal greetings and wishes and Have yourself a Merry Christmas and Happy and prosperous new year. Your NINAK interior is outstanding, hopefully it will be visible once you button up the fuselage. The "Pop Art" is a nice touch as well. That stuff is ageless and as has been mentioned here, it is a nice human touch to the model.
If you are doing a post 1919 version, what markings are you using?
Intersting stuff about your father as well.
Best
Mark
-
Cheers Mark,
Hopefully I will be doing a 30 squadron Ninack of B Flight, however there
is not a lot of photographic info out there, however we'll get there. As I
build, I keep on looking for stuff, just to get it right. Dad saw a bit but
didnt say much. Have a great Christmas yourself, and a 'guid' New Year.
All my very best to you and all the lads around the world, from New Zealand
See you in 2013
Dave

Nice work. I like the warmer red tone on the leather work.
Steve

Cheers Steve
Almost the holidays so should make some progress, in between
beers and BBQ'S, as its summer down here. Have a great Christmas

Cheers guys. For once Wellington was30 degrees :D Have a great New Year lads. All the best Dave
-
Beautiful work on the cockpit Kong!
-
Back from holidays, so here are a couple
of pics lads. Closed up the fuselage, and
ever onwards eh? ;D
Hope you all had a good one
Dave
-
Something bitter-sweet in closing up the fuselage, right Dave? Progress made, but all that beautiful work vanishes. Now, on to the exterior art work. I'm looking forward to it.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Thanks Bud, but I still know what's in there ;)
Dave
-
I see that you left the upper decking open for the wireless as promised. Can't wait to see how you present that.
Cheers,
Bud
-
oH! Joy! ;D
Should be a tiny wee challenge, but getting the thing
masked and the old silver dope on to start with
probably . . . . Enjoying this one
DAVE
-
Dave,
She's coming along beautifully my old friend. Looking forward to seeing her all dressed out in silver dope.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette
-
Dave, I thought to stop back in and have a look. Stunning work, and I like the layer by layer approach. I have this on my bench, and see I need to get cracking. Thanks for the inspiration!
-
Hi Mike
Go for it ;D Thanks for looking in, and please come
back again. There is some really good stuff here.
Best Regards from NZ
Dave
-
Built the tropical radiator at the weekend.
Needs painting, but leaving that for a few days.
Getting the fuselage ready to spray silver.
And all the other wee bits. Have a good week lads. :D
Dave
-
One more for luck ;)
-
Fantastic job on the radiator, Dave.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Im not real familiar with this machine. The trop rad would be a bigger unit? Looks good!!
Steve
-
All scaled from a windsock drawing.
-
ps
The underslung radiator was basically, just a cut
down normal sized one. Some had canvas covers
which were fitted at night, as the desert got bloody
cold, so when they started the Liberty in the daytime,
it gave the engine time to warm up correctly.
-
as per this example
-
Dave,
Beautiful work on the tropical radiator. First class project all the way.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette
-
Dave, I'm a little slow... are you doing a 1920s machine from "Mespot"?
-
Hi Mike
Nope! 1924 30 Squadron RAF - Hanaidi Iraq, B Flight machine.
Cheers
Dave
-
Have made a start n the Scarff Gun Ring also.
Cheers
Dave
-
Excellent Dave. Will be including a working bungee system too? First Class works my old friend.Looking forward to seeing what other additional details you've included.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette
-
Hi Gregory,
Thinking about it, but if its too fiddly then, back burner.
-
Dave,
Fiddy yes but if I were a betting man I'd bet you could pull it off.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette
-
I thank you for the confidence.
I'll have to try it now ;)
Watch this space . . . . ;D
Have a good one Gregory
Dave

Made a start, but went here for two days
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/8200825/Mosquito-steals-show-over-Wairarapa
Awesome
Cheers lads
DAVE
oops How did that get there? :)
-
Still the fascination with wooden planes? She must have sounded great. We're stuck with "stangs, Corsairs, hellcats, and the heavies at our shows.
-
They were there too. Plus there was the Vintage Aviatior ww1 stuff also.
And, jets and choppers, and 30,000 people. Awesome stuff. NZ has a lot
to offer the aviation nut :)
All the best
Dave
-
Progressing slowly. Started on the Scarff ring, for twin Lewis guns,
hence the stays. A no. 2 ring had them as braces seemingly.
And the hatch at the back is done also. Have a good week lads.
Dave
-
Looks nice Dave.
-
Extraordinary work, Dave! I'm glad those lovely wireless sets are so visible.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Cheers Bud, getting on with the Gunring and the silver
doped finish at the moment. Not as easy as I thought.
Metallic finishes and all that :o
Have a good one
Dave
-
The scarf ring looks great Kong! The acoutrements in the radio compartement is really a nice point of interest as well. Outstanding craftsmanship all around. Looking forward to seeing this silver NINAK.
I was in NZ once in 1977. I was amazed to see a Short Sunderland. Neat stuff.
Best

Cheers Mark,
You should see NZ NOW ;D
The Vintage Aviator, the old WW1 stuff; Warbird Restorations, etc.
Its an aviation geeks playground now, and getting better.
Hop on a plane......We've even got the Hobbit and suchlike.

Scottish winters . . . Been here 12 years now . . . Sweet as.
Kia Ora Mark
Dave

You don't have to listen but I'll complain anyways....................Good News, work cancelled today, Bad News, cancelled due to extreme wind chill and temperature........It's 1030 in the A.M. and minus 30 degrees with a 25-35 KMH wind!! As our Weathermen like to say, "feels like Minus 45, exposed flesh freezes in less then a minute"
Let me tell you the ways I envy you folks right now........... Lucky devils, enjoy! :'( :(
Cheers,

-
Flaming Heck Lance, and I though Scotland used to get bad.
Keep warm and safe mate, if I could send you some

I can't envy you...

Hi Ermeio,
I envy you living in Roma :) I have had some amazing holidays

Looking Good Dave:

Not quite finished yet, however here is the twin Lewis
and almost a complete Scarff Ring.
Have a good week chaps ;D
All the best
Dave

And the last two . . . Just got to fix up the bungee
-
Kong,
That's a fantastic looking job on the Lewis's and Scarff Mount, what's the source of the sights and counterweights/deflectors or are they from the "Kong-Desk"?
Cheers,
Lance
-
They are Norman Vane Sights. The front part
is adjustable for the aircrafts speed, and the
vanes at the back, due to the slipstream, keep
it all on track. Google Norman sights for more.
Cheers
Dave
-
OOOPs! Should have been clearer in my question Dave. I'm wondering if the added sight components are Kit, After Market, or scratch built by yourself?
Cheers,
Lance
-
Sorry Lance, all scratch built, but when I look at it again,
the vanes at the back are a wee bit too BIG. Tonight I
will make them right.
Cheers Lance
Dave
-
Dave, Still looks good, and enjoyable watching this progress.

Fantastic looking Lewis's, Dave.
Cheers,

The work on the sights is brilliant, mate, just like the rest of the build.

Back again ;D Nah! The jobs got done and the sunshine

Nice Dave! Does it spin?
-
Nice Dave! Does it spin?
Hell, for that matter, does it generate electricity?
:) (very nice!!)
-
It does if you blow on it ;D But thats another question . . .
Hee Hee :o
Currently it doesn't make electricity ;)
-
" Currently it doesn't make electricity "
Dave,
Nice pun my old friend. But with all those many extra details you've included I wouldn't be surprised if it does once completed. As always Outstanding works Dave.

Have a great time, Dave. That's one place I'd really like to go. Came close once, but not close enough.

You gotta visit Bangkok at least once in your life Bud.
The culture is awesome and the people are so polite
and friendly. The Thais are all like that, even although
like any country, some want to rip you off, but they do it so
gently. Honestly though, its a nice country to go to.
That's how I got my Rolex (30 bucks worth) 8) and its
working well.
Catch you later Bud

Apparently WNW is going to release a version of this in the near future. Looking forward to see how you pull this all together. Your laminate in the prop is spot on, and the rest is, well, spot on as well.

Thanks lads. I am in the same club as the Wingnut Wings guys,
Richard A, always gives us the inside info, but nothing on the Ninack.
A guy at work here, knows a lad that builds engines for Peter
Jacksons TVAL, and he says he's been working on a Liberty.
Only one plane fits that, I assume, so maybe a real one is in
the offing . . . . ?
-
Dave, a big "thank you" for taking a bullet for the team with this build! I wanted to do one of these also.
-
No worries Mike, somebody had to do it ;D
I'm having fun, and glad to share it my friend 8)
Have a good one Mike
Dave

Coming together very nicely. Im looking forward to the wings etc going on.

Dave,
Awesome big silver bird my old friend. However I'm disappointed the Lewis mount doesn't traverse or elevate. LOL just kidding the mounting and the entire project is a perfect example of the highest level of skill and craftsmanship.IMHO she's truly a remarkable project in total. Keep up the outstanding works.
Highest Regards,

Amazing work. If it wasnt for the background I would swear its the real thing!!!!
Steve
-
PS.
I did use fine knicker elastic for the bungee in the Scarff
ring, but had to superglue it in position, as it became all
to difficult and looked daft ;) Still, what the heck.
Cheers gents, and I thank you for your encouragement.
Long winter nights approaching for us in the Southern
hemisphere, so more will get done (fingers crossed).
Take care lads
Dave

Remarkable detail work as always, Red. Truly brilliant.

Been busy this weekend. Got one wing ready for its eyelets

Hope you guys have a great week.

Ahh what's not to like?
Highest Regards,

ps. By the way, the metal stuff on the bomb rack is'nt PE,
It's soft allyy cut from the base of one of those small
candles you put in a Fondou set. Very malleable and
easy to work with.
-
Thats the fellas . . . ;D
-
Inspirational Dave! Very nice progress.
-
More impressive work. This is already a masterpiece and just keeps getting better!!!!
Steve
-
Well, the weekneds' work consisted of making
a Holts flare and bracket, and the aileron linkages
were detailed a bit more than the kit supplied
bits. Onto the other wing now, so hopefully, I
will get them both fitted next week.
Have a good week lads
Dave
-
Dave,
Looking good my old friend. What is is purpose of the coiled tubing? Kind of sound like a dumb question I know but I know next to nothing of how the Hoyt Flares operate. I had assumed they were something akind to say highway flares. Keep up the outstanding progress my old friend.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette
-
Hi Gregory,
The coils are 'hold-down' screws, which are on a spool, and when
the aircraft is parked, they are screwed into the earth, sand, etc.
These was used extensively in the desert, due to winds, and
sandstorms and suchlike. They use them on modern aircraft
kept outside on grass fields, etc. The flares were operated by a
wire coming from the cockpit, and the charge just set off the
flare. I think only one was used at a time.
-
Dave,
Well duh! Hadn't thought of a hold down screw my old friend. Please excuse a senior moment. I saw the coils an thought maybe the Hoyt Flares operated with some sort of compressed gas or something. Thanks for the information never fail to learn something from this forum every day.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette
-
No worries Gregory, I have a few 'senior moments' myself :o
Only human eh ;)

Started some of the rigging, and a test of the patience.
-
Sorry if you've been asked this already, the thread is up to 19 pages now and I have ADD (not really I'm lazy). How do you make such small clean detailed parts. Are you doing your own photoetching? Do you use an CAD? I spend way more time than I think I should to create these types of things and wish I was more efficient.
-
Great beginning point on the rigging! You are nearing the home stretch now!
RAGIII
-
Hi Todd
Patience and the fact that I am a draughtsman using Cad all day;
Autocad and Solidworks 3d. But, I dont really use them for modelling.
I do scale off original drawing or scale ofF pictures using as many
references as I can, and thus I probably get as close as possible to the real
sizes of these bits. Plus I like the wee challenge.
Cheers
DAVE
-
Dave,
Your detail work is truly "world class"; if/when it fits the bill and time is available could you post a step by step for a component or two? You have a lot of skills we could all benefit from and I for one would really enjoy a bit of a tutorial.
Cheers,
Lance
-
No worries Lance. Anything in particular? Or just whatever I
can cobble together?
Cheers
Dave
-
Dave,
I add a lot of scratch built components to my builds and really enjoy the challenges there; having said that my results fall well short of yours. Comments/info on the materials used, adhesive(s), and techniques for the Scharf Ring and mounts, Norman Sight assembly etc. on the Lewis's, Photo Plate Charger and Lucas Generator would be great. Your work is spectacular and there's lots to be gleaned from it for all of us. Tall order I know, but any "how to" you can spare the time for would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, :)

More amazing work. What paint did you free hand the palm tree with?
Steve

Thinned down about 60/40 Flat Tamiya Blue and a steady hand.
I practiced it 3 times before I commited to both sides of the plane
Cheers

Thanks - one more feather in your cap - hand painting Tamiya - nice work!!!

Might get stuck into the top wing this weekend. Although

Dave,
Excellent freehand painting of the Palm tree my old friend. Looking forward to seeing more later.
Highest Regards,

Truly brilliant work on the squadron markings, Dave. I never would've had the stones to try something like that. Instead, I would've spent 6 months trying to produce it on the computer and print it on decal paper. The build would languish and the thread would die. Really amazing work, my friend.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Practice on scrap, then keep a pair of clean underwaer handy
in case it all goes to c**p . . . . Really, just practice, a steady
hand and a fine brush. . . . . He says ;D
-
So what if they release a late model, yours is, and will be better! I really like the whole deal here! Your added details, paintwork etc.! Looking forward to your rigging process,
RAGIII
-
I dont mind that bit, to be honest. The air gets blue
at times as the carpet monster swallows little bits of
brass tube, but the end result usually, balances out
the swearing and heartache part :)
Cheers Chaps
Dave

Funny I was just reading about WWII squadrons in Burma today, and there was mention of the 30 Squadron palm tree as a hold-over from WWI.
Love, the build, Dave. Looking forward to seeing the rest.

Thinned down about 60/40 Flat Tamiya Blue and a steady hand.

Where did you order the steady hand from Dave? I can't seem to find them anywhere on the Net. ;D
Seriously though, beautiful job on the palm tree.

Hello Dave:
Just catching up a bit on the forum as I have been away for awhile, just languishing here in the great upper Midwest.
This is one heck of a project and it is truly outstanding. I am just enjoying watching this progress. As has been stated, so WNW is releasing a post war NINAK, yours is the tip of the spear and you broke new ground doing it. Just amazing. Your detail photo's for the rest of us to study, your methods, all outstanding and appreciated.
Looking forward to more.

Whew! Well Dave, I have just finished pouring over the 23 pages
of wonder. I suppose I can close my mouth now and wipe up the
drool. I wanted to thank you and all the rest of you master model-
makers/artists, (you know who you are ;)) for showing me what
can be done. I have, sorry to say not progressed much from the
OOB stage...only a handful of models since coming back to the hobby.
I don't think I will be alive long enough to get to the level you
fellows have attained, but you sure give me something to aim for!
Thanks again to you Dave and everyone here. One thing you have
done is instill a love for this era of aircraft. Wow!...now what am I going
to do with all the jets in my stash??? ;D
Best Regards,
Ernie

Cheers Ernie :D
You can do it 8) Its all just patience, the right frame of mind,
and a bit of inspiration now and again . . . Go for it ;) I am
sure that you can . . . . Get one going and join the happy throng.

Nice to hear from you Mark, I always wanted to see the
Great Lakes. I envy you. The closest I ever got was
flying over Lake Ontario, when I went to Chicago, on
route to Texas a few years ago . . Impressive :)
Getting closer to completeing the old girl, but still a few
bits to do, and get the thing on a base of sorts.
Take care Mark . . 8)

One of the Handley Page fixed slots done last night.
It was bloody Baltic outside . . Winter is here in NZ :(
One more to do.
Have a good one lads
Dave
-
wonderful...
I see a change in the blue between the last two images... it's just matter of light in the picture?
here in italy should be deep springtime, but it's still windy and pretty cold, I hope in the next days in an improvement... otherwise no tomatoes this summer :-[
-
Yep 8) Its also a wee bit of . . In the sun the blue paint, applied
by the groundcrew in Iraq, would fade more on the top wing than
the bottom wings (in shade), and the slot, being up front, would
tend to be more sand blasted and faded than the surface behind it.
I have tried to do this by adding tiny bits of white to the top, and
a wee bit grey to the lower wings . . . ;)
Or so the theory goes . . . . Plus I think one was by flash and the
other was by a 100w lamp 8)
A bugger to fit though.

Hello Dave:
Mighty Fine work!

Dave,
The more I look, the more I'm completely in awe of the deatail and quality you've achieved on this project. Magnificent!
Tell me about the spoked wheels, I looked back quickly and couldn't find any info.............after market or your own doing?
As some of the Fellows would say, I'm gob smacked! :o
Cheers,
Lance
-
I bought a couple from Scale spokes, and as the biggest they had was the
ones for the Spad, I had to take out the centres of the 800 x 150, kit
wheels, add an inner ring of 0.5 sheet, sand for millions of years, and then
spray the colours. The worst part was, as the rims are fragile to a great
extent, getting them in and secure was a real 'S.O.B.' Then it was just a
case of thinning down the kit axle by 25% to get the bugger to fit. Took hours,
but got there in the end, and the result makes the piece. Cheers Lance.
-
Like you say, Dave the results are what counts and your patience
and perseverance have really paid off with those gorgeous wheels.
What an amazing model you've come up with!
Cheers,
Ernie
-
Last wheel on and a base in progress. Still to do some bombs,
add serials and the rest of the rigging at the rear.
Ever onwards, ever upwards
May the Force be with you 8)

The wheels :o
-
Hello Dave:
Words escape me. The more I see of your work as you near completion the more in awe I am of your ability and patience to employ that ability. Truly an outstanding piece of modeling craftsmanship at its finest. The wheels are certainly a nice touch, but they just enhance everything else you have accomplished so far.

Did a couple of chocks and finished the last of the bombs.
Jus waiting on my serial number decals, and then I can
progress to getting them on and finishing the rigging.
HAVE A GOOD ONE ;D

Great stuff. Love the palm tree tie in on the chocks!!
Steve
-
Some of the squadrons painted their chocks in flight colours,
so I used a bit of artistic license . . . . 8)
-
Dave, I seem to have no time at all lately for mine, but thought I'd stop in to check up on your progress. What a stunning build. just lovely. A nice detail on the chocks, esp. if they might have been in short supply at the time. It has been fun, and inspirational watching this come together!

She now has a number . . .

A small ammendment; I got the prop size on the plate changer
scale wrong. It hit the elevator wires, so I checked it again :o
What a dummy :P . . . So it looks better now.
Have a great weekend lads

Gorgeous model! Love the details you've put into this one.
Very interesting paint scheme too! Might do mine like that in the future as well. Nice deviation from PC 10.
BTW, where these planes ever used as mail delivery planes after the war?

Gday Flip,
Like the old RE8's they just faded away. The Wapiti used all the DH9a
wings, but other than that it passed out of mind.
-
Some pre 'Completed Pics', will take some better ones at the weekend
and post them in the correct section. I am not the best at piccys, but
I will try and get some better ones. Cheers my good friends 8)

You've done yourself proud, Dave. What a beautiful model.
It's been a very enjoyable and informative build, and I for

something appropriate ;)...you've earned it.

If I were close enough, I'd insist you have a dram of the finest I've got. (Single Malt that is, and I brought some real spectacular samples back from Scotland in May) Dave, you should be tremendously proud of this build. I'm really looking forward to the final photo shoot. Incredible workmanship, incredible detail, and an incredible Build. Salut!!
Cheers,

Cheers Lance,
I've a wee bottle or two of the golden nectar in the cupboard, so I'll
have one (any bloody excuse for a Jock) and toast yer' health laddie ;)
Plus its winter here in good old New Zealand, so its cold enough
(Another lame excuse eh?)
Thanks mate 8) As they say down here 'Box of fluffy ducks!'
(They're mental by the way)
Pics coming next week . . . G'day Lance
All the best

Slangevar ( to good health; to your health.
a salute with raised glasses in Scottish Gaelic) to all of you guys.
Cheers Mark . . . . I had one last night, but I'd better have another
tonight to toast your healths', and to make sure the damn stuff
hasn;t gone off ;)
Will get my act together this weekend and try for some decent
photos, so they should be up by Monday. Have a great weekend one and all
and thank you for your support. Now, at least in the interim, I can spend more
time looking through all your stuff . . .Which will be good 8)
Cheers
All my very best from NZ

Gotta ask, Dave, what's next on Kong's Bench?
Cheers,
Lance
-
Hi Lance
Thinking of either a Fokker dvii (never done a german one yet) or the FE2, cant make up my mind.
Any suggestions are welcome 8)
Dave
-
ps, I cant remember if I told you, but the KONG comes from the picture shown here.
My claim to fame, Mr Jacksons movie of the same name. The wee lad on the left 8)
Its in the last 5mins of the movie . . . .

Looks very serious! I am "vertically challenged " as well; used to be over 6 ft. tall....................."G' Forces are merciless over time!! On the brighter side, a low profile often keeps you out of view, and trouble!
All the Best!

Have a great weekend Lance . . .
For a week I was in the US National Guard, New York, 1933 . . . But in New Zealand.
Hire the movie, it's bloody good . . . . 8)

Dave! I'd no idea you were a bleedin' film star! And to think, all this time I've been hobnobbing (cyberly) with a celebrity. I'm all aflutter. I've seen the film. Now I'll have to rent it again.
Cheers,
Bud
