Title: Roden 1:32 Scale Siemens Schuckert D.III Jasta 12
Post by: lcarroll on January 10, 2016, 04:34:58 AM
I am going to call this one complete; I was going to delay until the Aviattic Siemens Halske Engine was suitably mounted on a stand or base of some sort but haven't got my mind around how to include it on the display base as yet. I'm thinking perhaps the engine in an opened scratch built shipping crate might work nicely, more to follow in future.
This Kit was not without it's challenges; I experienced fit problems with the lower wing and struts in particular and some old fashioned aggressive modelling had to be employed. In the end the model turned out nicely, and given it's subject and lack of another Kit in this scale I'm very happy with it. The Bren Gun Photo Etch Set provided a very impressive improvement and Rowan's Pheon markings and Richards Aviattic Lozenge and the Siemens Halske Engine Set really took the Kit into a new league. Great products and our After Market support Guys really have my thanks and appreciation, well done!
I weathered the model heavily anywhere close to the engine as engine oil leaks and catastrophic failures were all too common with this aircraft, and engine changes routine. Rigging is Maxima Chamelion 0.12mm mono with Modelkasten elastic thread on the gear, cabanes, and elevator cables. Paints are Tamiya Acrylics and the entire model is sealed with Vallejo Polyurethane Satin Varnish. The prop is hand carved laminated veneer with a light oak stain and 6 coat urethane finish.
Here are some final finished photos.....

Not a bad effort by Roden, I hope they release more of the rarer types in future.......   an SS D.IV would be nice!

Cheers,
Lance

Wow, Lance, this has to be one of the best SS D.III's that I have seen! Beautiful job all around with the weathering, rigging, Aviattic decals, and of course, that prop! Your hand carved prop goes beyond I've seen! Congrats on your finish!

Your SSW III leaves me speechless, Lance! So very beautiful! I really like the plane, but did not buy the kit, as I do not dare building it... Thanx for sharing!

Congratulations Lance on this superb model, the build has been a joy to follow and to now see it finished it is a real delight. The propeller is a model in its own right, you did an excellent job with the carving and colouring. The weathering on the model is very well done and the rigging is brilliant, you have made this Roden kit look as good or even better than any Wingnuts kit.

Fantastic, Lance!
I love the Siemens powered engined fighters and wonder what they may have achieved had they not have been so unreliable.
Thanks for putting our products to such good use!

Best wishes, Richard

Richard,
The Thanks goes to you, and to all of our members and associates who provide the wonderful array of after market additions for our hobbyists. I suspect the After market Business is not the most remunerative business proposition however the boost and enjoyment it provides to our mutually enjoyed hobby is beyond measure, and your efforts are not often enough acknowledged. This little old Model builder very much appreciates the efforts put forth by all of you, Thanks Gents, you bring a lot to the past time.
Cheers,
Lance

Lance, this is an awesome model, the thining of the cowling vents (or whatever they are called), the paint chiping, the stains and all the other small details, gives a vey älive"kind of look to the SSDIII, I love it!

Mike,
Thanks for your comments. For the blue I mixed Tamiya Blue X4 with their White XF2; sorry, I neglected to record the ratios just mixing until I got the shade I was looking at on the Pheon Profile Sheet included in the Decal Set.

Just surfaced to find this post this morning Lance and what a treat to start the day with :)  Congratulations on a simply stunning model.

You've worked hard on this to achieve such a worthy model. Everything melds in together perfectly - the decaling is so realistic. Truly, a superb job all round, you must be very proud of the finished result indeed.

Kind Regards - Tug

What a beauty Lance! You've done a superb job with the kit. In particular, your hand crafted prop really sets her off. All of the time and effort you've put into this project was well worth it from what I'm seeing here. If it were mine, I'd be pleased as can be with it. Not everyone can take a bare bones Roden kit and improve it as well as you have here. Take a well deserved bow my friend.

Cheers,

Chris

Simply gorgeous Lance, it just proves what a good modeller can do with a reasonable kit and some effort.

You brought Rodens offering to above WNW expectations.

I love it and when time and money allow will add one to my stash and collect the extras and hope to do something close to what you have acheived.

Impressive.

Stunning build, Lance.
We all know Roden kits are no shake 'n bake models. Work must be poured into each to produce a good outcome.
You have achieved a far better outcome for your SS.DIII - Well done!

Well Gents, to say that your kind remarks are pleasing only covers half of it! I`m flattered that model builders of your talents and those of previous posters are impressed by this one. A common theme is approaching or even achieving Wingnut Wings quality which we all consider the standard in our hobby. I`d really like to see Roden back in the mix with a few new subjects and, should WNW not soon produce some of the types already available from Roden, we`ll hopefully see improved sales of them. Competition is healthy, and we`ll all win as a result. An Albatros W.4 or Oeffag Version would be most welcome, and IMHO both would sell like hot cakes! In the interim I`ve got a Pfalz D.III in the stash and I`m keeping my eyes peeled for one of their Spads.
Cheers,
Lance

Superb work, Lance -

I've built this one in the past so know what you mean about a none to easy build - and your workmanship on this makes my look a very poor effort in comparison to yours.

Very well done!

Lance,
I'm sure positive (but need to double check without getting your hopes up!) that I have one of the Spads you require. A Spad VII no less.
If I do have said Spad in my stash you're more than welcome to it.

I will send word if I hit the stash-pot!

Lance , being a big fan of this aircraft type this is one of the best builds I have seen so far and hope that when I start my build I end up with the same results . I do have one question and not sure if it's me . Is the top wing warped ? I notice this in my kit but figured it was a one off thing .

Terri,
Mine wasn't warped but it does look a bit "off" in some of the photos, especially from the rear. I think it's because the rear of the "V" Struts were lowered a bit more then I should have to get  a fit of the upper wing. I'll try to get a few photos tomorrow to illustrate. When you build it be ready to trim those interplane struts a bit at the back end.
Cheers,
Lance

This for Terri, the leading edge looks pretty good, I think there's a trace of warp evident but nothing that really stands out. Any curve that is there was induced when I mounted the wing, out of the Kit Box it was "straight as an arrow".
